Possible DDoS attack on Nov 5, will it affect big sites or even Bitcointalk?

So I just saw a warning from DICT here in the Philippines saying there might be a DDoS attack happening on Nov 5. They didn’t say which sites will be targeted, just that both government and private ones could be affected.

Now I’m thinking, if this really happens, can it also affect popular websites or even Bitcointalk? Like, could the forum slow down or go offline if the attack gets massive?

I know DDoS isn’t about stealing data, it’s more about flooding the servers till they crash, but still… kinda curious how far the impact can reach.
Anyone here seen similar alerts in your country?

Why would online protesters even care about Bitcointalk or any private company websites when there are massive protests happening against the government? Naturally, their anger and focus are directed toward the authorities, not random private platforms, unless those sites are somehow connected to or supporting the government in some way. Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense for protesters to waste time attacking unrelated websites.

Of course DICT probably wouldn't know about it, they simply don't have the means to detect or handle that level of activity. It also doesn't make much sense for foreign hacktivists to launch a ddos against PH government sites, large platforms and social networks have far better detection and mitigation tools and can defend themselves, and it's a waste of time attacking those non-gov sites in related to their ideologies tbh. The only time it becomes plausible is if those foreign actors are actually working with or part of a local group, for example, DNH led by Klammer, in which case the situation would look very different.

While this is likely true, Cloudflare could be affected if a lot of the sites they're targetting use Cloudflare, and since the forum uses Cloudflare also there could be issues. However, it's probably unlikely still. Cloudflare are usually well aware of things like this happening and adjust accordingly. They're also, well suited to deal with it without knowing about it also as they've proven to be reliable, despite the public perception of them.

Inasmuch as I don't think this will have a direct impact on the Bitcointalk site, I commend you for giving us a heads-up.

Most large-scale DDoS attacks tend to focus on government sites or big corporate servers and that's why I don’t think Bitcointalk would be an intentional target but if the attack is massive enough, it could indirectly slow things down here depending on which network providers get hit.

I haven’t seen any official alerts like that in my own country but there have been a few discussions online about possible global cyber activities around the same period.

Let’s just see how things unfold on the 5th. It would not be the first time we see internet traffic acting weird during global events like this.

Yeah, usually by region. It's pretty unlikely, but not something that's impossible. However, I'm also not aware of these DDOS warnings since our government isn't warning about the 5th of November attacks. It would really depend on where the attacks end up being, and whether the Cloudflare service is sharing servers with Bitcointalks.

It's not entirely impossible, but certainly highly unlikely I would think.

Your president and the DICT have done well to issue the alert and warning, and it doesn't matter whether it's a fake concern or not, "prevention is better than cure."

As to whether this can affect global sites and Bitcointalk, I think the chance is slim. Bitcointalk has been the victim of DDoS attack in the past, so I believe that better measures are already in place. If at all there is an escalation through ripple effects, it will be minimal, because it's not the main target, and I'm sure that Cloudflare will do its job.

DDoS attacks are not that easy to pull off especially for a website with big servers. Well if the question is will they pull of an attack on this forum servers directly well I'll say probably, depending on how much resources they have on their hands I think they would instead of directly attacking the forum they go for important tools here like bpip and tryninja tools.

Reason is because they are easier to target because of relative server sizes. But for the case of the forum I bet the admins are ready with enough experience from previous attacks.

Think of a big server as a battleship.   No matter how big they are, they can be taken down by hundreds of small aircraft.    Bitcointalk and other busy websites can use CDN (Content Delivery Networks) that spread the traffic out to a hundred smaller servers.  In my analogy it would be equivalent to having a hundred destroyers spread around your coast - much harder to take down.

It is expensive to do a DDoS, so it doesn't make sense an entity would announce it and give websites a chance to preemtively switch over to CDN.

I couldn't agree more. You even further buttressed my point. Pulling off a DDoS attacks is basically similar to tryna stab an opponent with a knife that has a handle with a knife edge too which means the tougher your grip and thrust, the larger the effect on both parties.

On a forum like this pulling off such an attack will require a lot of resource and that means the attackers would be spending a decent amount of money too.

Do they actually have to spend much? I don't think it costs that much because the other forum for altcoins have been in a constant non stop CF attack.

There was an announcement here in the Philippines, but those servers could actually be from outside the country. Anyway, it seems like it’s not a serious threat for now since there haven’t been any reports of websites being under DDoS attack, not even government sites.

It might not be a serious threat, but something is going on somehow. It could be a process of distraction and the real attack could happen some weeks after today. Meanwhile, it is nice to see that everything is good, but then the day is not past yet. Let's cross our fingers  until today is gone.
Also since there's no threat from the global community, everything could just be fine and you have nothing to worry about.

So far, I have been going on and offline, and there seems to be no issues as to the planned DDoS attack on my end here, as insinuated by the OP. I have been having easy access to the platform, and my network is working perfectly well.
However, this makes me wonder why such a protest would be held against a private website instead of the government, or is it that they are trying to pass across a message to the online community? Maybe it is a warning of an impending attack and a call to be on a high alert.

Why is there going to be attacks today. If they did attack Cloudflare provides DDoS protection but there are famous alternative companies. Big sites buy DDoS protection so they will block some attacks.

I think you're misunderstanding how "rare" a DDoS is: it's not rare at all, it happens all the time. The warning is about targeting a specific country, and if you're worried about large social media, each of them probably has more data centers than your entire country.
