Why it is called Merit

I come across some posts here saying why should they give merits to legends and other higher ranks and I feel like it will loss it value if the newbies just get merits simply by posting without it making sense if it is done that way this whole process of building them will loss it value and the newbies won't know what a good quality and educative post looks like.
