What I observed in my own locality is that people only pay in cash if they are just paying a small amount, but mostly when its already more than a thousand bucks, people resort into digital payment which is more convenient for them. With their cards and digital wallets, they don't have to bring big amount of cash as there are also cases of theft rising. That might have significantly reduced physical theft but it has also introduced new ways of theft through the digital world. Specially nowadays when online payment is a popular thing, phishing attacks have risen in number and people still lose money, and I dare say they are losing more money this way because the thief can access their bank account whereas before they could only get to the small amount they were carrying in their pockets...

Eventually, I feel physical theft was much more better to what is happening in recent time, although theft is not a good thing. But, with the way people are getting scammed so easily due to lack of knowledge on digital apps and website. I recently checked the amount of scam in US was as a result of poor internet knowledge. Most of the citizens do not know some app actually exist, they do not know loans can be taking online, card can be connected to SaaB and PaaS platforms for direct payment.

In the past, if someone wants to steal from you physically, they have to use violence or be smarter to convince you. Right now, the digital space made it a lot easier with the help of AI tool like VEO3, CHATGPT etc.

It seems that most businessmen are starting to avoid making large cash payments, this is because they want to avoid various risks that threaten themselves and their safety. Crimes involving money are quite common, of course criminals will target those who hold large amounts of cash. The same thing happens in my area, business people and others are more dominant in using mobile banking or banking services for large transactions and I have done the same thing so far.

I no longer use cash for large transactions, but I still pay cash for smaller ones. Cash transactions may still be more prevalent in my area, but anything is possible for small transactions. Even someone who sells their jewelry no longer gets cash from the buyer, all the money is transferred for safety and security.

I can't remember the last time I hold cash in large amount, unless if I'm going to village where access to cash will be difficult and not everyone that sells and buys basic things accept transfer even as the government has made money operators mandatory for all shops. I'm not sure if OP is aware that some blockchain now support ban of stable coins, if they found your account with some irregularities, your stablecoin can be suspended and wouldn't be able to use them unless they unfroze it. With this development, I'm not sure I will touch stablecoin simply because I want to do daily transaction.

Honestly, I'm comfortable with lightning payment the government has allow money operators to use to make transactions in real time. I have never went to buy something from any shop and wait for more than 5 minutes for my transaction to be confirmed by receiver whether it's through trabsfer or through debit card. You will hardly experience transaction failure and if that happens, it get resolved immediately. I will use this and get peace of mind than use usdt or usdc that government will freeze one day at their convenience.

We still 100% cash payments on everything, when you buy a car you will need a big bag of money to carry it. Even houses, some people avoid using banks because they won’t allow you to cash out big amounts of money.
Our local visa cards are useless and 99.99% of shopping websites and services are banned.

I can keep going with the negative stuff when it comes to banking and payments in my region, it will take a full page. Lastly, we have received a recent update about banning all trades involved with crypto currencies, anyone who’s using crypto is counted as a criminal.

I don't remember the last time I used physical cash in anything other than paying for something like a taxi (and even that can be paid using your smart phone nowadays). Everything else have been through various digital payment methods for many years now.

Cash theft contributes significantly to the reduction of cash payment. but online theft and fraud happen to be more risky than normal cash theft, this is because online banking fraud potential loss can be larger and can also wipe out your entire account balance.

And this makes me even more grateful for the conditions in my country, which are actually much better than I had imagined when compared to some other countries, especially the country where you live. Recently, I've been thinking about my area. I don't know if the same thing is happening in other parts of the country. But my focus is on my own area.
Cash payments here are becoming increasingly rare. Now, without realizing it, I personally pay more often using digital methods, whether by simply scanning a QR code (QRIS) or other digital methods. And I see this has almost become the majority of payments here lately.

A few years ago, cash payments were much more common. People still carried cash in their wallets or pockets rather than keeping money in their digital wallets. Now, things are starting to reverse. With what's happening now, it seems like the future of digital currency will become commonplace. Even stablecoins will likely begin to be accepted. CBDCs won't take long to adapt if people are already accustomed to digital payment systems.

I also read that in America, on July 18, 2025, a law regarding stablecoins was passed. The law is called GENIUS (Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins Act of 2025). And reportedly, even the UK is drafting this.

Does this mean more countries will follow? El Salvador, Poland, Lithuania, and Estonia have reportedly also adopted stablecoins. I don't know the details. However, the era of digital payments seems to be upon us. And I'm curious to see whether cash payments will still exist in the future.

Earlier everyone was doing cash payments. But government made UPI so easy, that I see majority doing UPI now. Even for small transactions, digital payments are being uses. Only those sellers do not accept digital payments who want to hide their income and save taxes. Unless he has monopoly in the market, he cannot force this condition on buyers. So more or less, everyone is forced to accept digital payments now.

Although I don't like paying cash and I prefer digital payments. However, in my area, cash is more popular than digital payments. Cash was never convenient, people uses google pay or apple pay all the time, they just registered their debit or credit card and you can easily use your phone to pay things.
Soon it will be the future of bitcoin when integration is there. As of now our best bet is paypal to integrate bitcoin directly to compete with apple pay or something like that.

I agree if you say cryptocurrency is the future of payments, but I would be skeptical when it comes to bitcoin. Because when it comes to everyday payment methods, what most of us care about is that the fees need to be cheap or free, and the transaction needs to be instant. Meanwhile, if we compare bitcoin with some altcoins or traditional payment methods like digital banking or PayPal. It is clear that bitcoin cannot compete with them in terms of fees and transaction speed. So I doubt bitcoin will be the future, but it will be the future of cross border payments as transactions are significantly cheaper as well as more private.

Cash payments are still available in many places. People are more likely to use cash than digital payment. Some people often use QRIS to pay if they don't carry money. Digital payments becoming new options for them. That would also be safer for them from the bad people.

Thanks to the technology that gives us an easy way to use it. But cash payments can still exist in the future especially if many people are willing to use cash rather than digital payments. But we have to wait for the government update related to the finances.

This is perhaps a global trend. For the past three years now, digital payments have become a part of us when cashless policy was introduced to combat terrorism. At first, people find it hard to adapt to the system but they gradually get used to it. Personally, I don't feel comfortable whenever I have huge cash on me until I find a way to deposit it. It has gotten to the extent that every vendor has shifted to accept digital payments otherwise they will lose significant customers that prefer to pay with digital methods. Cash transactions are now common in the villages where they have no access to network that'll we enable them to use digital payment but I bet you every store in the city here has their POS in case you want to pay with your card or through bank transfer.

I see that cash vs digital payments depends are very regional. Some prefer cash and its more popular in their area, some use digital for its convenience. In my country we are partly forces to use digital payments, because nobody, who works in "white", can not receive cash as salary. Only transaction to an account opened in local bank. That makes cash to be unpopular and have no advantages over digital payment.

But it is truly now the need of this century because by adopting this method all transactions come into the record that is easy for the government to collect the taxes on payments. Indeed you're right, because personally I can't even remember when last I used physical cash to purchase something. Digital payment has really dominated in so many areas across the countries and not only in my country Nigeria. In some countries today, people no longer move around carrying physical cash rather they use cards or phones for everything.
In my side I think it all started during the period we called the time of cashless policy and today it has turned into something normal in the sense that you don't need cash before you can purchase something at the supermarket, restaurants and even in small shops because everybody uses digital payment via point of sale (POS) which is very  convenient as a result of the fact that you can pay fast without thinking or fear of misplacing cash. This process has been adopted so quickly since everyone has a smartphone to access and the process is easy.
But still some areas with unstable network or where there is so many aged people, cash is still in existence. So I will say that, generally we're in a global economy where digital payments has taken over and soon cash will no longer be in existence and also can't be used unless it's for an emergency.

In my area, Cash payment and digital payment are both accepted and you can pay for your anything using any method you feel like using and I don't see digital payment method dominate cash payment method because yes it is a digital world but we still have the old generation and some of them still don't understand how electronics or digital things works and me from this generation still use Cash payment most of the time to purchase personal things, Digital payment is the new thing and there's no doubt but there are still people from this new generation that still prefers old school.

Basically, probably 80% of all payments are non-cash. Whereas a few years ago the situation was the opposite. Cashless payments have many advantages, but they have one giant disadvantage - if there is no connection, Internet, or just electricity, then payments are impossible. In my area they accept both in most places. Some places like cafes might say its non-cash, however for the most part every business accepts both. However I would say 80% of people pay digitally and not by cash. They either pay by debit which withdraws money from the bank account right away or they pay by credit card which needs to be paid off by the end of the month.

Paying these days is super fast. Many just tap their credit card or even pay with their phone. Even 20 years ago if you wanted to pay you had to swipe your card, and then select Chequing/Savings and enter your pin, it took almost a minute to process the transaction and now it takes a second or two. The convenience that comes with making seamless transactions without holding on to cash is an advantage that has led to a reduction in the availability of cash across sectors. If you're getting an item that's worth $100 at the least, the most convenient thing to do will be to make digital transfer of that amount to whoever is recieving the money rather than withdrawing it as cash and spending it in that form.

Even from the angle of a business person, it's safer to get your payment through transfer rather than accepting it in cash form because it's more convenient and portable to even carry the amount regardless of how huge it is. Cash is just useful for smaller transactions but for a much bigger transaction, mobile transaction has come to stay.

I want to highlight that card payments became very common since Covid pandemic. By the way, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, these countries are very digitalized compared to other EU countries.

Stablecoins are not necessary for digital payments. I prefer digital payments the way they are designed now instead of stablecoins but I think, CBDCs are inevitable. Sadly, soon the time will come when we won't be able to pay with cash and all of our payments will be tracked and recorded. If they don't like you, they'll block your account and you'll be in a huge trouble.
