There has been established that there is a call by civil societies and some political analyst in Nigeria, a country in West Africa for a single six years terms of office for Mr president and state governors.nigeria is currently operating on 8 years terms of office,which is four years first terms  of office, elections will be conducted for second terms of office another four years total 8 years.accordling to the civil society and the political analyst that are clamouring for a single six years terms of office for both president and governors,if signed into law, it will reduce the cost of governance.

The important thing is for the people to be free, and the king to only regulate fighting between the 'tribes'. And then to get out of the regulating business immediately after there is peace between tribes.

What is your take on the issue?

Be it a total of 8 years(i.e two terms), or 4 years, or 6 years, it still doesn't define a way of having a good governance. We have to understand that having good governance is simply the ultimate goal that can only come from the same government. The limited number of years doesn't change the fact that people with negative intentions would keep finding their way into office. Of what use is a 6 years tenure if the same person or people in power are not in anyway different from the previous administration?.

Good governance lies within the government, and not the numbers of years. If a government don't make any impact in the first 4 years of their administration, what makes you think that cutting the cost, thereby preventing them from running a second term campaign would help them save a cost to improve the economy?.


Just to add, I'm not a fan of anything that exceeds 4 years.
I think anyone who has occupied any position should not be allowed to run for other positions.

If it's signed into a law, there will be pros and cons to it. If someone is elected and it turned out to be a good leader, 6 years won't be that long for that tenure. And vice versa, if a leader turns out to be a bad servant, that 6 years is way better and lesser compared to 8 years. I guess that's how democracy works and it's still the people that will put anyone in the office based on how they like them and how they see them govern the country. IMO, the best is actually with what US implements about a short term of 4 years and a reelection of another 1 term.

the idea of a single six year term has both advantages and risks!! on the positive side, it could truly reduce the cost of governance for a country like Nigeria that spends huge resources on second term campaigns, political battles and power struggles. removing the pressure of re-election might allow leaders to focus more on real development instead of politics. but again  the downside is that if a bad leader gets into power the country is stuck with them for six full years with no possibility of voting them out after four and also the aspect of accountability may reduce if leaders know they cannot be re-elected

African leaders have a sit-tight mentality. Most of them want to rule for life, so they keep on amending the constitution to extend their tenure. A single term for six years will be okay since some countries spend so much money on elections. The funds that would be safe can be used to finance some developmental projects.

Six years will also be long enough for the government to start and complete some long-term projects. The new government sometimes abandons the projects of its predecessors, which leads to a waste of resources. Six years will help in reducing abandoned projects.

This reason you highlighted cannot convince a country to sign it because they're the same even if two years is what differentiates them, even if is now six years they will still be conducting the same election which will be three years before they conduct another three years to equate six years so all the expenditure of cost of things on the eight years tenure will cost the same because they are going to campaign, Nigeria is going to decline it because the politicians politicians can be selfish and since it has been eight years and a lot of people have ruled that long others who would one day wants to become the president will like to see it remain as before so that they will enjoy there time.

It does seem like people become much more corrupt after about six years in political office, so for that reason I think your idea can work. But, it is a minor band on a system that fundamentally fails at its core for several foundations which have immoral basis, the most substantial of which is the concept of unequal rights of a ruling class, while claiming rule by the people. What a farce and an outrage. Rule by the people is not what we have, not even remotely close, in any country on Earth.

Our president tenure is a single six years term, its too long if you have a corrupt administration, and too short if you have a good president with a lot of vision and projects for the country.

Two four year term is already good in my opinion because if the people is satisfied with the president's governance the citizen can reelect him, and if they are not they can vote for another president, but for a third world country the cost of holding an election is too expensive so its ideal for a six year term for all elected officials.

The most important thing here is the people will choose to vote the right leaders that are not corrupt and will do projects for the betterment of the people, something that we failed to do.

This suggestion still won't change much thing, the president can decide to use just a single term of 6 years and loot to his satisfaction, since he knows he won't be coming back for a second term. So that money that would have been used to run for second term in office Will be channeled to something else.  Truth is that, we need true democracy that will reflect the will of the people, where institutions are solid and not kowtow wings and caprices of politicians

However the reason why that suggestion was made for that of Nigeria is because, it's a country with lots of tribes, and hence a president comes from a certain tribe, he automatically concentrates his energy to his tribe, this includes appointments to Juicy offices and empowerments. Meh, it is the usual demagogy which is used by both leaders of Latin America and Africa to remain in power, just throwing lies at the wall if seem something sticks to it and keep people fooled.
Even if terms in Nigeria were reduced from eight years down to four years, all money used in canalign would still not be enough to meet the needs of the needy, it is more likely all that wealth will get misused by ruling parties anyways.

Though, it is always good to reduce the time in office of both presidents and governors, having the same people in a position of power tend to corrupt them and turn them into dictators and autocrats, there are many examples of it through history.

What is your take on the issue?

In Nigeria elections are conducted every 4 years, and that gives opportunity for change of regime. If a particular governor or president isn’t performing well, after 4 years it’s left for the citizens to either vote for them to run for another 4 years which is going to make it 8 years in total, or if the person isn’t performing well, he can be vote out and replaced by someone else they believe will perform better.

If you requesting for them to be on power for 6 years, I feel that’s just kind of much, and politicians  will be staying long on power even as we know they won’t be able to run for second time, but I feel 4 years is still okay.

If the government doesn’t spend the resource on election, don’t be suprise that you going to see people that will embezzle the money which is ment for the election, so instead people stealing it, then it should be spent on election.

The insight of one single 6 year term is a thing of joy to so many because money won't be wasted on second term campaigns. When leaders go after second tenure, normally they will spend a lot of money, go on many political moves and at the end, lor sometimes they forget what they're there for. But with a straight 6 year term they can face their work.

All I'm trying to say is that whether it's 6 or 8years, if the leader isn't disciplined and good minded, there won't be change. Because of the mindset don't change, improvements will be very difficult.

The debate for a single 6 years rule or 4 years two term is not the problem of the ordinary Nigerians or many backward countries, what we need is good governance. Corruption has eaten deep in the political class, they are mostly in power to embezzle public funds and whether it's 4 years two terms or 6 years single terms they will make the most of it to steal as much public funds as possible.

I think that 6 years single term is better because most of the politicians that did 4 years always completes their second 4 years term whether electorates votes for them, it not they will rig elections to complete another 4 years. So it's better to let them steal as much as they can in 6 years to avoid electoral violence as a result of rigging.

I agree with  the six years rulership actually. And i pray that it is been signed  soonest. Though I have a strong feeling that ot would have its own disadvantage that might be very bad for the masses.

The  social economic, political and human capacity development that the country is lacking of, is it caused by a  4,4  year tenure in office term?

Long as is the same crop of politicians it will cause no improved output to the country's social economic development because the ideology for looting and misappropriating is still there.

My assumption is that the conditions will grow worsen and d the little development we are experiencing will be slower. The culture of these elected public officials has been that they will show working in the first tenure of 4 years, using the first tenure to make some developmental strides to gain the trust of the citizens for a chance to a second tenure, it is at the second tenure they get more severe with looting.

Giving it a single term of 6 years will be for them toloot all what they can without giving much attention to project developments cause is their only shot with no second chance possibility.

Well, every country have their law that is guiding their political position and other things in the country, Nigeria law maker and civil servants have to agree for president to rule in eight years both first and second tenure which is the reason you keep seeing some leaders in Africa misbehaving in their various offices, A good leader can use four term to do what he or she what to do to develop the country for another president to take over the position, assume is four four years to stay in the office, but some law is eight eight years and it will be difficult for any president that won the first tenure to lose in the second tenure because they will do everything possible to win the second tenure  to settle their debt or steal funds from the government.

If you have been witnessing what is happening among the politicians in Nigeria you will never agree to new law they are planning to implement because if they can't use 4 years to do anything good giving them 6years for a single tenure will make them finish the resources in the country because they will never implement any law that will favour the citizens all they are after is what will benefit their pockets.
