Begining from January 2026, Nigeria is set to roll out a restructured taxation framework publicly aimed at improving government revenue and reducing dependency on oil income.

There is no way a twenty five percent flat rate of income tax will be better for the economy. This is just politicians taking advantage of their position one more time. I don't understand why the people are not fighting against it. A tax reform where even a person earning a minimum wage will be eligible to pay the twenty five percent. It is insane. Even countries that don't have corrupt systems as much as Nigeria don't pay that high amount of income tax. The country is not the way it is because of lack of funds, the country is the way it is because those responsible care only about themselves. More taxes means more money for them to steal.

The title is a but hilarious especially to Nigerians and anyone who resides in Nigeria. It hard to say anything that Nigerian government do is of any benefit to Nigerians I could mention many things on how the Nigerian government has fail it's citizens but some will be deviating from the post and the board.

The taxation system the government wants to impose on paper is meant to benefit the country and the citizens but a country with abundant natural resources yet the citizens hardly benefits anything and the economy is nothing to write home about I don't see how the present administration won't launder the proceeds from the taxation and that will cause so much unrest in the country.

What people are afraid most about is that thryy are not benefitting from the tax, that the officials (I mean the government officials) are corrupt and stealing from the citizens.

See the money FIFA gave NFF to build stadium or 2 stadia or so seen 2 or 3 years ago, the money was embezzled. There are many corruption in Nigeria, people are complaining that they do not think the government will use the money appropriately.

I think the taxes want to be used to service the international debt that Nigeria is owing. Maybe there may be more to it.

This the is reason why I do not like Nigerian and their plans, because if is the American or other countries they would create an employment opportunities before increasing taxation, but then, this is not done in Nigeria instead they Will would want to increase taxation without knowing what to do and when to do it.

Hi, Charles-Tim, nice to see you again man ! According to the new Nigerian Tax Act, the definition of a small company has changed. The Nigerian Tax Act states that businesses with a turnover of 100 million naira or below and fixed assets of 250 million naira or below pay 0% tax on key taxes.

This means that they are completely exempt from Corporate Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax &  the newly added Development Levy.

This change is intended to reduce the tax burden on micro &  small enterprises, to ensure their development &  expansion

In a corrupt free society taxation should be able to benefit the citizens because the income generated from it is being translated and invested into infrastructure and other important areas of the economy like healthcare etc, but because of our corrupt system, we can't trust the government enough to vouch for them that the taxation system will benefit the average Nigerian because we know any income generated may likely end up being embezzled and used for personal gains. Our government also has not helped we the citizens enough to begin to tax us, there is nothing that most persons can say they have provided for them or these businesses. I see it as a decision to further add strain on the citizens.

OP it would have been better that would have taken this post the the Nigeria local board were it's dedicated only to discuss things pertaining to Nigeria only. How ever I don't see anything spectacular about the new law that will come into effect from next year in the Nigerian taxing systems. The problem is not about tax but corruption Nigerian has not seen the effects of the tax that they have been paying in the pass, so the problem is not about tax reform it accountability on the part of the government. Government really needs to show what they are using the money of the tax payer in the areas of education, security, health care and building of sustainable infrastructure.

It seems like the Nigerian government are often tinkering with new ideas, which is progressive but we will only find out much later if it was prepared properly. It is so easy for corruption to seep into these kind of new rollouts, which can bring in huge efficiency savings as long as they are done effectively and hopefully transparently. You also need to assure that the majority of the population can use these new facilities and have support for those that are not very well versed in online services. There is a danger that if this is done badly it might reduce tax revenue, increase confusion in the whole job market and potentially be open to new kinds of abuse that were not accounted for in the past. Such a wholesale change of how they operate could lead to disaster if not carefully managed.

You see the problem I have with this new tax system in Nigeria is simple,  the government is not showing enough results for them to be asking taxes from citizens to pay more.  People are really suffering just to make a living,  and graduates had to learn skills just to survive,  and most of us create opportunities for ourselves as the government offers no assistance.

The government expects too much from Nigerians for no good reason when they perform no work to make the country develop.  No steady light,  no jobs, and nothing to show for what we're already dealing with?  Nigerians  mostly do all the work when the government attempts to take more from citizens,  for what exactly?.

If we were seeing real improvements, my dear trust me,  Nigerians will have no reasons to complain about taxes,  no body will complain when the government works to create a successful community for the citizens. But when they are offering no reasons,  people will assume they will be taxed far more for no reason.  See not until the government decides to do something or starts to show good results,  you see this new tax that they are planning will just look like an extra  pressure on citizens who are already doing everything by themselves.

Of course the increase in on percentage on personal income tax is for them to have more money in their coffers. However how do you go on with such arrangement when a higher population of the people are underemployed, and lots of labour laws in regards to employees right are not Respected, so the system has a lot of irregularities that hasn't been fixed.

 Also the trust system between the government and the citizens have been eroded, as people cannot trust this tax reform as the tax they've been collecting over the years haven't been used judicious use, just the way this present government have borrowed billions of dollars yet nothing positive on the social engineering system of the country has been impressed upon.

If the citizens were allowed not to pay tax, they will be very happy to accept on this, but they have forgotten that this is what has been in place for centuries, as long as you're an income earner, you're entitled to pay for your tax, however, governments are also expected to play justice in the utility of these funds for the growth and development of the community we lived at, also, the rate should be a considerable one, such that people will not think of evading it.

I'm not a nigerian, but i've ever heard their new taxation system will be a marginal system same as what already used in US, AU and many more. As far as i know there will be a limit where anyone who has income less than a spcific number will be a taxation free.

What the hell are you saying? Were there no tax systems in the country before now? No developed and progressive country will have 25 per cent as the lowest income tax rate in the country. It used to be 10 per cent for a certain income level and 15, 20, 25, 30, depending on your income level. It's insane to place a 25 per cent tax on even people who earn minimum wage. It doesn't matter even if they use the money well. A person earning minimum wage and a person earning a billion a year can't pay the same rate of income tax

No, there is no limit. People earning the minimum wage are also expected to pay the same 25 per cent. In the US, a person earning 100 thousand dollars doesn't pay up to 25 per cent income tax, in Nigeria, people earning an equivalent 5000 dollars are supposed to pay 25 per cent tax. That is the definition of a shit hole. It's bad. People in the US who earn 5000 dollars a year don't even pay income tax. It's bad enough that a third-world country has to pay more taxes than developed countries, despite having no social amenities whatsoever, but the worst part is, the politicians and government officials just take this money and share it among themselves.

Developed countries are hit complaining when they pay tax because they know where they tax is going to and the work the government will use the money to do, but in Nigeria where graduates struggle to get employed due to the high rate of unemployment, and poor governance, I am not sure if the tax will be used in the right direction because the oil money they are saying has been hijack and no development is coming to the citizens, therefore, this tax reform will cause more harm than good and the government will use it as another opportunity to embezzle money due to selfish interest.

In other developed nations, taxations are one of the things that drive the economy of the country further but they out in place many things to actually make it work out. If the Nigerian government don’t have any good framework to make this beneficial to their citizens, then it’ll only be another way to embezzle from the citizens without them seeing the impact of their taxes being collected by the government. Other working nations make good use of this task for its citizens.

In a country where there is a large percentage of unemployment and facing inflation, implementing this successfully will temper with even average Nigerians if not planned out well. We hope everything works out for the good of the country and its people. Although, they still need to have the best framework, or else, they should abandon this or it’ll become a pain to many Nigerians in the long run if not well implemented.
