I don’t know about those loan apps but I highly doubt that they got his number after he completed his KYC verification because I know of a friend who has never had anything to do with gambling talkless of even think about undergoing a kyc verification but somehow those loan apps still call him frequently to let him know that he has some coupon or that he has been chosen by the company to come enjoy some insanely low interest loans.

A lot of people have experienced this same issue and they are not gamblers, the only explanation for this is that there’s an app probably those banking apps that goes out users numbers to these loan apps so that they’ll get more customers to come use their apps because it’s crazy for them to just call and know your name unless they got it from a source with your credentials and I’m think it’s the banks and not even those gambling platforms. This is just a speculation though and I might be totally wrong but still I think it’s worth giving a little thought.

I used to receive spam SMS. It's hard to tell whether it's because of gambling sites or not. Phone numbers are often asked everywhere. While I don't like sharing it, I don't have a choice because it's often required not just for KYC but also for registrations, OTP, withdrawal, and so on. Unfortunately, it's impossible to use a throw-away SIM each time you need one. I just delete the messages right away and report them as junk. They go away at some point.

The bottom line is that any piece of information that's shared isn't safe. So, it's probably prudent to treat every single communication as suspicious until otherwise proven.

I've never received a call, but I often receive messages. Most of the messages I receive are from people offering collaborations to win at gambling, probably influencers. I've also received occasional messages about loan offers, which were quite convincing, but I didn't need them, so I ignored them.
When I register at a new casino, I often find I have to enter a mobile number. Sometimes I use someone else's number, sometimes my own. I actually don't think the mobile number has anything to do with my gambling, as deposits and withdrawals are made through a bank account.

If you get spam calls, better try to remember where your have left your number last time. I think that OP got those calls, because he has left his mobile when registered or ordered something online. I think this can be different from local gambling sites because some local gambling sites may have access to your phone without you knowing about it as payment are processed through the bank. Like in my country, there are some places you will registered and you will start seeing such calls but these are calls from scammers. I do not know how it was done but I think our Bank Verification Number (BVN) provided to the site is used to know people's phone number. I may be wrong but I have seen something like this before.

I haven't had this experience before, but it's good that you brought it to our attention. I think such issues usually happen with casinos that are not reputable. Gambling sites that cannot afford compliance teams or are new to start, use 3rd party compliance teams. Especially for countries that are harder to verify but has a large user base. There are possibilities that those 3rd party companies could be compromised. Even major companies like Meta(Facebook) or Apple have issue with data leak. Small indie companies are far more susceptible for such hacks, if it interests the hackers. Honestly, if you don't want your data to be out in public, avoid leaving your digital footprints, giving them to anyone and everyone who asks. Issue with Sportsbooks and casinos is, that they need KYC to detect collusion or find the culprits who could fix games and profit off of them.

Guys your data is not safe, I mean your name, email, phone and other related not that much important data compared to credit card information or wallets which most likely are safe. I hope you have all seen that meme going on in the net that says "put your credit card in our database in order to check if it is hacked" and that shows how insecure our online environment is if people are not aware of IT related best practices regarding security online. Anyway if people feel at risk there is that online legit site "Have I been spawned" to check if important data to you is leaked on the net. I use that site a lot. Also where I live some years ago Iran hacked the government and all data ID, telephone and salary were publicly online for everyone to see.

That's surprising. Does the government keep track of each person's salary, or does it come from tax reports or something similar? I know in my country you need to report it individually. I would never use my actual phone number for verifications on the internet. I have a secondary phone number for verifications, and so far nobody has ever called me offering products or services. Perhaps I'm using the secondary phone only on legit online platforms or maybe it's because I live in a country, where phone marketing is heavily restricted. I don't live in the USA and I can assume that most phone marketers would target only English speaking Tier 1 countries(US, UK, CA, AUS, NZ). I don't want to talk with such phone marketing scams, because the scammers are using AI tools to record voices and they might use my voice for other scams.

This has literally nothing to do with what has going on. 2FA is basic security, it is not advanced at all and it does not protect data in any meaningful and sufficient way. These accounts can get hacked in a variety of way, and whether there is 2FA is completely irrelevant. Generally when you submit KYC to an account there is no way to download the data back to yourself, only the casino has. From the perspective of the casino, what matters more is the data storage and retention policies rather than 2FA. If all the data is stored unencrypted for example, it is meaningless whether there is 2FA or not for employee accounts. The system will be hacked eventually and once it has been hacked all that data will be stolen and leaked.

It is classic narrative bias. People that don't know how these things work find all kinds of meaningless correlations in the world. At times they believe in chance and at other times they stubbornly refuse to believe in chance. This comes from a lack of education in statistics and how the world works. It is entirely possible that sometimes something like this happens by chance, your data could literally be in the progress of being compromised at the same time that you are doing KYC on a gambling website. By statistical chance this will happen to some people.

They should make these theories only if they are able to back it up with something, otherwise they are baseless speculations -- on the level of believing in horoscopes. If the platform allows it, you should always put a unique and cryptographically secure watermark on all your identity documents. This way if they get leaked you will know where they came from.

It happens too in real life. Almost every day, I get calls from the insurance company offering their programs. I am confused where they get my number. I never share with any companies that I don't want. But then I realized that the insurance company got he information from my bank. Once I asked about this to the account officers but they didn't share the data with outside parties. But I don't believe them.

Even the banks share the data with other services which I don't know how. Casinos can also do the same. The casinos may not do it but there's no guarantee that their employees will not sell the data. It is difficult to hide our information so be careful when doing KYC.
