As the year is finally coming to an end, and as we prepare ourselves for the year 2026, we should have in mind that we are in for a heavy tax reform, which would definitely have many people pay for whatever transaction they initiate without a proper label or tag attached.  I believe the majority of us here must have seen videos circulating on social media about the tax reforms and what to do in order not to get double-taxed for both personal and organisational taxes.

There was actually a statement attributed to the minister saying that "transactions without description or tag will likely be taxed," which means that every transaction must carry a description for which that transaction was initiated, so as not to get double taxed, because that is what the statement likely means.

As for the crypto traders and enthusiasts who use p2p platforms to do Bitcoin trades and other crypto activities, I believe we do this daily and on a regular basis. When there is a constant flow of funds in and out of an account without any description for it, there definitely must be some sort of side attraction, and in so doing, there definitely would be eyes on that account, and now that the new tax reform would commence from January 2026, for a safer means of trading without any side attraction and notices, what do you feel or think would be the best headings to describe your transaction as a tagline for it. Maybe we could help each other to ponder over it here.

What's your opinion about it?

This is a good one, I also think these guys have gotten super smart too since there would be data sharing across every activity linked to a particular TIN to estimate their worth, I mean your TV subscription, Buying petrol and paying with transfer and other little things you do involving your bank account, they would use these transactions to estimate your networth, and this is crazy.

I have two approaches
  • If you keep repeating the same remark, it would get suspicious, so the best approach is a way to inform the vendor of the tag to include in the current transfer
  • More effectively, as much as you can insist that you pay through stable coins for bulky transactions so that you would have less funds to be taxed upon, that is if we are sure of the exchanges that do not share data with the government or better still you can use a No KYC exchange like Bisq to further make your transfers anonymous.

I did not know about this, if you are paying your tax, you have nothing to be worried about in my own opinion. To add double tax to transactions that has no description is only false.

If someone is suspected to be evading tax, they will first carry out investigation on the person, the person will be questioned about it before penalizing the person.

Is it that it is every transactions that you carry out in your account that will be taxed? I have been hearing about this tax of a thing and they are not explaining it well for us to understand. Are they now going to treat each transactions like the way they do with all these mobile banking like Opay and others were we get debited #50 whenever we receive money that is up to #10k and above? Or will they calculate all the money that flow into our account in a month or a year and tax it? Someone with a clear understanding of this tax reform should enlighten me on it please.  As for something to tag you can ask the buyers to be adding orphanage donations or less privileged donations. And also reduced how much you will trade your coins to fiat. If you can do it once a week it will help you to save some taxing.

There are so many propagandas spreading across social media platforms about the tax reforms that FG plans to initiate by 2026 so it's not everything we should believe because there are people that just aim at causing panics to the public, unless the tax reforms become effective, we cannot really know how it going to work. That notwithstanding, i don't know how not attaching a description to a transaction will become problematic, i thought that the tax system is based on annual income. Every organization is registered of which they will be taxed differently from personal accounts so i don't even understand the double-taxing you are talking about. If an organization or an individual does not pay their tax, isn't it supposed to be by fining them and not double taxing.

I don't want to speculate on this until we reach next year when the new tax reforms will come into effect. I know it will be biting at the beginning but with time, we will find our way around it. There will always be a way to avoid double taxation especially when it has to do with credit alerts, that we will find out from next year. I'm still wondering how they will tax our poor mothers in the villages, and small business operators like POS.

This is what I have been thinking about: how will the poor rural dwellers cope with this taxation of a thin. Not all of them are informed about this development as a result of their locality and their limited knowledge of the happenings in the city.

As for the POS operators, I believe there will be a way out for them since they are very close to the bank by the nature of their work and engagements. Maybe the Apex bank might consider them and make a way for them to operate, since they transact virtually every minute of the day.

I wouldn’t worry much about it for now. Nigeria government is famous for making laws and not enforcing them, but they usually enforce laws that involves money though. Let’s see what happens next year and then we will come up with possible solutions. We always do.

There was actually a statement attributed to the minister saying that "transactions without description or tag will likely be taxed," which means that every transaction must carry a description for which that transaction was initiated, so as not to get double taxed, because that is what the statement likely means.

What's your opinion about it?

E Dey funny how the government of the day Dey always find means to generate revenue out of the masses and yet, them no Dey create any means for people to earn or fair condition for businesses to thrive.

This tax reform bill way go Dey in effect from next year so na one way go home with lots of flaws but, no be say them no know, them go wan allow am to run certain waves first make them first collect and chop as them like before them go reason make some kind changes.

Which kind taxation way go Dey based on description as per purpose of transaction… that’s dumb. People would just stick to a purpose and that’s it. These people never know watin them wan do cef, they should rest it.

It is a wise move to keep your transactions labeled, mostly with tighter rules coming. Making use of simple, truthful tags such as payments for services, individual transfer, or even payback should minimize unnecessary flags. For those that trade crypto frequently, keeping your records clean with clear descriptions aids to avoid confusion or issues of double taxation. Remaining transparent is the best way.

As already said by you, since it would be starting by January fully. It would be better to include a tagline such as " Payment for Gasoline", "Purchase of clothes", payment for building materials" ECT.. there are thousands times tag one could use during transactions to avoid being charged excessively or double charged.

Sincerely speaking I don't know where this our present government is really driving us to, have this country really turn to a business ground for our leaders? Because I see no reason for the government of a country to be placing taxes that are  irrelevant on their citizens that they haven't one day provided job opportunities for. This heavy tax reform that our government is to kick start by next year it's just madness, what they are supposed to do which is to look for a way and tackle insecurity in the country to keep their citizens secure and safe from bandits they are not doing that one, even to focus on creating jobs opportunities for their citizens Zero, rather they are more focus on taxing their citizens that are unemployed over nothing, what country we are born into, I pray for sense for our leaders, because they have non.

You just put the right word for what’s going on in Nigeria, our politicians and leaders are using us to cash out instead of doing the works that sent them to the office they are there to put laws that’ll enrich their pockets, a business center for them.

No one is contesting anything anymore, the legislative is just an Oh yes member to all the executive says cause they’re all birds of the same feathers and same greedy fucks.

For the OP, I think getting to know what kind of monetary transactions wouldn’t be taxed is key so you’ll keep cycling and recycling those descriptions in your P2P transactions.
So we’ll be taxed and yet the government is not doing anything for her citizens. What a country !!.

The Nigerian government isn't going to tax each transaction like the way they deduct 50 Naira for every 10,000 Naira that enters your personal account. From 2026, the reason to write payment description in each transaction you will make from your personal account is for the Nigerian government to know the transaction that's taxable. From the information I got, any transaction with a payment description of "GIFTS" isn't taxable.

If someone is suspected to be evading tax, they will first carry out investigation on the person, the person will be questioned about it before penalizing the person.
We both know that many people would try to evade tax and you cannot blame them. Most people barely have enough to sustain them and what their expenditure is surely above 800k meaning that thy are in the category that would be taxed while they barely survive.

Their would surely be multiple cases of tax evasion, I just wonder how many Nigerians would end up in jail since it attracts a possible jail sentence. I don't see this tax reform stuff getting sustained, it may just bring a repeat of what people suffered in the cashless period of 2022/2023 and fade away too.

Omo, this new tax reform is serious and the reasons for this idea by the government, I think it's to make every transaction a clear one, so that problem won't surface later.

The only way to be at the safe side is to be honest and truthful in the description on any money that enters your acct and leaves yo avoid overthinking.

For those who are into crypto, being transparent will save you alot, don't hide anything rather keep clean sheets and describe your transactions clearly.

My opinion if for you Keeping your transactions in a clear stand, be honest and truthful so that at the end you will have peace of mind.

But what I know is that the government is as smart as the people they are ruling over. Whatever tag that we want to give our transactions to evade tax wey dey come by next year go difficult not to be captured in one particular tax umbrella as far as government is concern. However, usually there are some areas wey tax is not collected like gifts. If you put description of gift on the transaction, well it may go but na how much gift can be allowed or how many times will you be hidding under gift to be doing regular transactions?. Charitable organization and religious institutions too fit pass but I don't know if they are getting taxed now or not. The thing no go dey easy with income plus high cost of living.

What's your opinion about it?
Anyway, an not surprised about the current development ahead because that's what our government are very good at, always paving a way out to take from the poor citizens without a proper way of resiprocating back, but that's fine.

Although have not gotten the full gist on how it will take hold but am pretty sure it's all about taxing and monitoring our day to day financial activities, is just for us be more careful and ensure not to include any crypto related information on the remark section so we wouldn't get into trouble, but till then a better way of figuring things out will definitely come.

Make nobody fear for the tax matter until we enter next year see how them go make everybody dey pay the tax included all the people wey dey village wey no dey too put plenty money for their accounts.

For the tagline wey we supposed use for our transactions, the exchanges needs to also notify their customers so that them no go use certain things as remarks so that both the buyer and seller no go fit get issues for their accounts.

Lastly, we don see many many things for naija no be this tax own dem go use break us so make we just watch and see how everything go play out. NB: I fit dey buy things from people wey dey receive payments for usdt ooo nothing we no fit do.
