I have read about the France kidnappings, and it seems to be getting out of hand. If I may ask, do the victims hold their assets with any local exchange? Because this, I believe, could likely be the cause of the kidnappings, with the possibility of an insider leaking information about holders on their platforms. Although it could also be a result of the carelessness of the victims to likely flaunt their assets in public, or they must have told a close friend about their holdings, which must have triggered all these attacks on them.

As crypto enthusiasts, we should try as much as possible to keep our crypto assets a secret to ourselves, as no one can be trusted. Any silly mistake might cost us an attack, which might likely also cause harm to us, because if they attack, they would likely want to also kill their victim, because they would have a trace to who they have told about their asset holdings, so we ought to be very careful how we relate to people about our crypto involvement.

I believe that this information is not available if the victims used a local exchange
If they did, it is probably something that is being investigated, and the authorities would not disclose it right now

However, I would bet on something simpler and more dangerous: social media
Nowadays, it is not difficult to find a lot of information about a person on the internet, and if criminals think that person has a lot of crypto assets, they can gather a lot of information on social media, such as spouses, relatives, places they frequent, etc

In my circle of friends, only a few people know that I have crypto, I feel unconfortable to share this

Who knows if the boy was killed just because they know about his crypto wallet or account? I am not asking questions but I am just letting us know that we should hide our coins from people by all means possible.
Of course, this is a terrible tragedy, but people were robbed and killed for any form of money, not just crypto. I don't think this is specifically about cryptocurrency accounts, as this student was the son of the deputy mayor of Kharkiv, which already indicates his financial solvency. The attackers probably knew that the victim was the son of a wealthy official, meaning he had money (whether digital or traditional).

Outsiders should not know about cryptocurrency accounts, nor about any form of money, whether traditional or digital.

The Austrian authorities are keeping quiet about the amount of money ultimately involved in the torture-robbery-murder. However, it is likely to be a lot of money, as two of the 21-year-old's crypto accounts were emptied after his murder. The two suspects, also Ukrainians (19, 45), were wanted internationally and were caught in their home country last Saturday. They had enormous amounts of money in dollar bills with them. It is suspected that they quickly changed the crypto money into banknotes.
The case involved a substantial sum of money, the amount of which was being concealed. Curiously, where could a 21-year-old student have acquired such large sums of money? Money from his father, a government official? How legal was this money, considering that officials untainted by corruption are extremely rare. Ukraine is not subject to any sanctions, meaning large sums could have been legally held in a bank account, but why were cryptocurrencies involved in this story?

"Als dann auch noch die Krypto-Konten des wohlhabenden Studenten leer waren, schlug die Familie Alarm. " ( https://www.krone.at/3975774) - An excerpt from the article reveals that family members also knew (or even had access?) to the addresses of the wallet in the student's hands, suggesting that these funds were clearly not the student's personal funds.

Such stories will be used by regulators to tighten controls on the exchange of cryptocurrencies for fiat money under the pretext of monitoring criminal activity and demonizing cryptocurrencies, which are allegedly used for criminal purposes.

You are right sir, social media is another factor that could warrant such an attack because sometimes people tend to get influenced and carried away by the showoff by some social media influencers and they too would join such challenge forgetting that they are online and that exposes them to security risks which they have knowledge about, they just set themselves up for attack without them knowing that.
Even as a Crypto enthusiasts, it is not safe to disclose your portfolio to anybody because you never can tell their intentions towards you. The better you remain anonymous the better for you to not encounter attacks from anywhere.

He is 21 years old, he was tortured and burned beyond recognition.

I posted this on this forum because of this:

The Austrian authorities are keeping quiet about the amount of money ultimately involved in the torture-robbery-murder. Privacy is important, let us be careful of people and what we say.

If you want to read about it: https://www.krone.at/3975774

Another incident showing us why it is ultimately important for us to hide our crypto portfolio from other people.
We never who is the devil in disguise. We can trust nobody. Our choice of disclosing our portfolio becomes the sole reason of our trouble.
We have seen enough scenarios already. This is we why we should be extra vigilant when we let others know about our funds.

It's very risky to show your wealth in EU and US, you will be safe if you live in Japan.
Regardless of the country that you are, people living in the country should be very careful. Living in Europe, North or South America, Africa, Asia or Australia, people should be very careful as long as people are living in the  country. This can happen in any country and it can start at anytime and it can begin with anyone that let people know he is having money in bitcoin or in other coins.
Japan could have been mentioned by the member above due to its low crime rate compared to the US and other countries, but that does not still stop the fact that it could have happened anywhere like you have mentioned.

We just have to be careful and protect ourselves from being detected as large holders. The target starts from when those criminals notice the person is holding an asset that could easily be moved without being traced.

It seems there are still people who ignore the importance of maintaining privacy, and I suspect there are still many like that. The case the OP mentioned is one example. Privacy is one of the most vital things we must protect in our lives. If we don't, there will be many risks that could occur, whether it is a case of surveillance that could lead to direct (physical) theft, or indirect (hacking). I hope the perpetrator of the crime is soon revealed, and the common threads found at the crime scene should be able to lead to an investigation. By the way, consider storing your crypto like you would any valuable item, meaning you won't tell anyone about it, and try to keep it as safe as possible, so that there won't be another case, or sad news like this in the future.
That's a lot of disregard for privacy, they show off more for the sake of getting a lot of compliments including influencers in my own country where there are still a lot of show-offs and they don't think about privacy.
I am always vigilant about the assets that are owned as much as possible not to let people know, because maintaining security in ourselves with what is feared where like the case in this news, we never know when this disaster comes so we must remain vigilant.

This is a surprisingly bad news, the guy left is country behind to avoid that ongoing war and thinking that I will find peace somewhere else and this happened? I am wondering how a Ukrainian can somehow expose is crypto holdings when English isn't his native language, very hard to believe.

It is also possible that they planned to extort him completely and they come across his crypto wallet, who knows? This shows that no where is safe, a girl who did nothing and also evade the war in her country got stabbed i think in a train going back home, she was so defenseless that you won't see the attack coming.

There was another which involved a older woman, she was walking the street with a kitchen knife and she stabbed a kid, I think age of 4 years old, I was so pissed looking at the camera feed, like sometimes I even think that the UK is more dangerous than my own country, because no one gets stabbed walking on the street for no reason.

Somehow they know the ownership of the victim's crypto assets. Whether from the Story on social media or he himself revealed the ownership of assets to them. It's better to keep your crypto asset ownership a secret because the more people know about it, the more it can lead to negative consequences such as robbery and murder. Therefore, it's better to remain anonymous.

I don't know whether the 21-year-old man was an influencer or not, but his decision to reveal his asset ownership to others cost him his life. While telling others about your Crypto assets may not sound bad, it is not a good idea.

Regarding the fact that it is highly discouraged to tell others about your crypto ownership, this has been discussed in the topic I have attached below, perhaps it will educate Newbies and some other members after reading it.

Topic Title: Why it’s important to avoid telling everyone about your crypto holdings

I don’t think language matters that much here. You don’t need perfect English to expose yourself online or offline. Even small clues, lifestyle, or wrong people around you can be enough for criminals to connect the dots

I agree, but I’d add that even indirect hints can be dangerous. Flexing lifestyle, screenshots, or “jokes” about holdings can expose you. Anonymity isn’t paranoia anymore, it’s common sense
People used to not even tell how much Money they made.  These days it is a 'flex' to make a lot of Money.  'Flex' as in you tell strangers how much it is worth risking to rob you, and between these strangers you tell there will be actual thieves looking for the next victim.  Anonymity should be common sense but common sense is exceptionally rare now.

Today I read on a crypto website (in Portuguese) that on Monday the 15th, Brazilian police arrested eight criminals who robbed a crypto user in 2024

I'll summarize: this crypto user was renovating his office and in a casual conversation mentioned to one of the construction workers that he invested in BTC
After that, the criminals broke into the place and forced the victim to transfer crypto to them
They stole 300,000 reais in BTC, as well as a car, cell phones, and laptops

If anyone wants to read about it, here is the link, but it is not in English: https://livecoins.com.br/reforma-de-escritorio-em-sp-termina-em-roubo-de-r-300-000-apos-vitima-comentar-com-trabalhadores-que-investia-em-bitcoin/

Another case that shows how important it is not to talk to strangers about owning crypto  Shocked Shocked Shocked
