It's a thing of delusion of control that gambling usually mask itself with and alot of users fall victims to it. The person fits into the severe gambling addict description so instead of saying are you not ashamed or using any other words, try to let him know that he needs help from the outside. Because it is not possible to stop once we are addicted on our own, we need therapy or even rehab in most cases to tackle this and get away from that.

Before it gets into you, you should try and avoid it because the effect of it is worse than what you can imagine. That is true, we should not be worried about others life all because it doesn't suit our own ways because while you may be judging others, some are there too judging you. So who is it that needs the change?
Though there are obviously ones who has been knocked out of the tracks of responsibility. Those may need help when justified and most may need to be rehabilitated over for medical check if they are really in correspondence because not really everyone who act like they knows what they are doing are actually in control of themselves.
Also, using a cold wallet or whatever funds storage system, it does not make the change. He is being honest about the mess that he is in, and this could be the right time to convince him that there's hope. Some characters of those addicted to gambling are in denial that they are addicted or that they are hopeless and will just continue playing.

The more your blame game the more you miss your chances of self-accountability and lost of self esteem. What you could have easily addressed, you won't be able to do so because you have already shifted that responsibility to someone else who does not even know or care about you. The blames are shifted, the less accountable someone is to themselves and the more the problem continues to linger for no reason. Don't put blames on your parents, don't put blames on your spouses or your children or anyone, take the responsibility of blaming yourself for your wrongdoings and addiction then work towards a better person because there are chances you will become a better person if you strive to become one.
