Crypto Changed My Life during COVID! Sharing My Wins

GM GM! Just wanted to share a wholesome story about how crypto actually changed my life as a teenager during covid.

Back in 2021, the crypto community exploded because of Axie Infinity (play-to-earn) in my country Philippines, which opened a huge opportunity for people like me. I was a trader & P2P merchant on Binance, Bitget, and OKX, and during that time I was earning around 120–140k PHP per month (approx $3,000/monthly, note that this is a very big chunk of money specially someone living in a third-world country).

Everything started to feel normal because aside from trading income, I was also earning extra through P2P. It felt amazing being able to buy what I wanted and provide everything my family needed.

I almost hit my first million pesos (approx $18k) during that period, if not for the slow collapse of many coins and the fact that my dad got sick so I ended up using most of the money I saved.

So yeah, I basically don’t have savings now at a age of 21 (currently 3rd year college in cybersecurity) because most of my extra money is still invested in crypto. P2P trading isn’t as enjoyable anymore, so I decided to use my capital to buy and hold altcoins, ETH, and Bitcoin as long-term investments.

I’m hoping the crypto community explodes again in the coming years! I can feel that this is just the beginning. WAGMI! (We’re all gonna make it!)

You can't have Bitcoin in your portfolio and remain the same over years, because it's a valuable asset that increases at the cause of time, we have a lot of similar examples that have also been here to share their own side of the story, on how bitcoin in particular changes/transformed their lives, once we know what we are doing and focus on learning perpetually, we are going to achieve what we wanted from Bitcoin adoption in due season.

Although coming across the title of the thread I was expecting testimony of how much much successful crypto changed your life for prominent good of breaking poverty in the long run but it seems you feel quite unfortunate about how the market has disappointed you all the while.

It's obviously a lesson learnt in the hard way but most important is that you do still have portfolio holding in the long term.
Trading hasn't been a favourable for many who're just eager to make quick success. It's a market of probability.
While you're also investing in the Alt market, do well to do your proper research before buying so that you don't regret it at the dump over short term hypes.
Also, you'll be more successful in bitcoin if you holds for the long time.

Sorry to hear about your dad—life really hits harder than any crypto crash. But at least your gains went to something noble and not into some NFT of a pixelated cactus.

You can bitcoin is not some magical coins that multiply your investment over the years. It gives you an energy from what you have put in. So literally if you invest a small amount of money in the market shouldn't expect much profits when the market eventually turns bullish. Op literally had a good plan and my advice to him is to trust the process and be patient. Over time he will see the results of his investment. He already had a great start judging from the fact that made couple of grands from his trading and p2p as well. The best decision he took was to invest in crypto, all now that remains is to reap what he has sowed.

There is a need to have backup funds like emergency fund and other variances to protect your bitcoin investment from being tampered for survival in case you have an emergency and need funds to sort it out immediately. Since you do not have any savings, you should look into building one out of your other earnings.

You still sound like a trader and not someone ready to go long-term in investing, although I can agree with you to cash out your altcoins investment if there is a price explosion.

For bitcoin it is more rewarding to really go long-term in it, since you are still 21, you can target holding for 30 years or more and cash out in your fifties, if you can hold and still find ways to add to your portfolio prior to the termination of the 30 years holding period, you'll definitely reap good profits provided bitcoin continues performing well.

There is no guarantee on your bitcoin investment, we are only having a positive bet on securing our financial future in bitcoin. Bitcoin has done well in the past, we only hope and believe it continues to do well in the future so that investors of today and earlier would continue to reap good benefits

If it is bitcoin, I still like it. But if it is about crypto, it is far more risky. You can be very lucky with crypto but they are like gambling and it is full of shit and dump.

I do not know much about Axie Infinity (play-to-earn) but I guess it will have an altcoin, just be very careful of altcoins.

If you are patient, bitcoin will still later go probably 3 or 4x in the next cycle if it later bottom. But I do not know what could be the bottom right now.

I believe the only lesson learned is to set aside emergency funds. These funds should be in dollars or stablecoins (divided across your top three options). If you're skilled at trading, you might be able to achieve similar profits again with a smaller initial investment.

Your dad would be proud of you for saving his life. Experience is the best teacher. Now you know that having an emergency fund is essential. Also, diversifying into Bitcoin after profiting from altcoins is a good idea.

I hope you carefully chose the altcoins you are keeping? Some of them easily lose value making hodling them very risky. Bitcoi has proved to be more relaible fo over a decade now.

Hodling altcoins long term is imho not a best idea and you will almost certainly end up having less than you would have if you converted everything to bitcoin. And if not everything, then at least the vast majorify of it.

Or it could really be that you are at the right place at the right time and played that game as it was really the hype if I can remember it. And just like you many of us have our ups and downs with crypto during that time. It was really a bull run and even if we are still in the middle of the pandemic, people still celebrate it with a bang. I'm not sure though if it will still be the same story for this cycle as it seems that we have replicated that time in 2021 with regards to all time high and hopefully we did save or hold or maybe has taken profits already. But yeah, Axie was one of the biggest hit in that year and most of us earn a lot of money that time.

It's really painful to hear about your dad and I hope he's a lot better now. Basically, Bitcoin investment should be considered long term investment but on the long run with proper research and risk management one could also try out other digital assets but not ignoring the fact that it could be a risky investment compared to Bitcoin's relevance.

Bitcoin had a pretty good run in they year 2021 breaking new highs and seeing a down slide as well. It has always being consistent over the years, with statistical analysis proving that , but i believe if you were that high in the past you definitely know your way back to the top, it would take a matter of time.

Yet again, for more clarity altcoins are very volatile and are risky investments that could either yield you multiple earnings or take everything away in a short while, so it's best advised to make proper research before investing and not based on media hype or influence.

Yeah, it depends on the time frame in question.. In any case, the biggest portion of our portfolio should be BTC, that's how I see it.

Op, sorry for the setbacks you encountered. One thing I know is that if there is life, there is hope and you can make more money than you did before. Just don't stop trying. As you've chosen to buy and hodl crypto instead of trading, I wanted to advise that you invest more in Bitcoin than altcoins. It may not give you more returns, but it's safer in the sense that it carries lesser risks than altcoins.

We all have our share of ups and downs, and everyone can remember their greatest moment when they looked at their account balance and saw huge numbers. I don't know how you managed to earn such a huge sum as $3,000 playing Axie Infinity and P2P trading. I played Axie myself, but at best, I could only make $200 a month, and it was hard work, and I didn't even want to play that game anymore.
Only people with multiple accounts could win around $600, but nothing more. And that wasn't easy either.
I hope you have an easy life going forward.

Where I live, 3,000 rubles is a huge amount of money, and that's despite the fact that this country isn't considered particularly poor. Even 2,000 rubles is a really good amount of money, enough, according to friends, to support a family of three. So I can imagine your happiness when you were successful in these endeavors, like playing with earnings and exchanging cryptocurrency for fiat and back.

Don't despair if you're not earning that much now. Opportunities are always there, and you can always find new sources of income that will allow you to break this earnings record.

I am also form the same country and had most likely similar situation but this time it happened way back in 2017 and the following years just gave me some stress. During the booming of initial coin offering I made money through signature campaigns especially bounty hunting which pays good that time and that was when I earned more or less nillion in my local currency, I bought two motorcycles for me and my brother as we only walk from highway to our home in the mountain wherein we are neighbors. I also build a family house which we can shelter during strong typhoons unfortunately I ran out of funds and never had the chance to finish it because I got scammed from my two investments here in my place, then the pandemic came and I lost my 9-5 job, then super typhoon in 2021 came which caught us off guard and it get us no chance of recovery and anxiety hit me as well because you know financial difficulty, I suffered insomnia up until now and just recently in November 2025 two strong typhoon hit us again and this is the second time we hid on that unfinished house I built in 2017 though my family were wet and felt cold that time it still protected me and them even without roof from those strong typhoons. I am just hoping I am able to find a way to raise funds even just for the roof to keep us warm and safe for the future typhoons.

A quick advice if you care to read.

Sell those altcoins, all of them, keep holding that Bitcoin you already have.

Take out $70 and buy a hardware wallet for your Bitcoin, keep holding the rest money in USDT or Fiat, and wait for Bitcoin to go even down, because it will, many people are waiting for a new all time high when 126,000 already feels like the top, Bitcoin have broken down on the most important chart structure.

70k Bitcoin is coming, you can start to DCA at this point, if you feel like you will miss out, you already have some Bitcoin like you said, all you need now is DCA into 2026 and beyond, you will have a good future and thank heavens you are still young.

What happened to Axie Infinity is called bear market, the coin did very well but bear market hit, and the value of the coins started to fall and so the income that players are earning started to go down as well, this is very normal but as you can see this Axie Infinity never did well again, the market have changed and unfair for altcoins right now.

the fact that you were earning this much as a teenager is impressive enough whether or not you are from a third world country or not
