I wonder if he could have gotten away with it if he didn't lose it all. Article says that he was convicted from money laundering, but it didn't really explain how he tried to launder it (at least i didn't see anything). Just buying cryptos isn't money laundering.

From the articles it sounds like he didn't even try to hide his tracks, but that he just was careless and incompetent with money. I mean, sure, he was scamming as money wasn't meant for that, but still.
