So all of a sudden everything changed and you people started buying food things from the market? What in the first place changed that stopped you people from farming? I don't think you people would have stopped for any reason if truly you were enjoying that privilege of getting every food things you need from your farm cultivations. Perhaps if you guys were doing that, you should have been selling same food stuff to people right now, earning from it and still feeding from it. Farming is not bad but if you people have been into it since, my question remains the same, why stop?

Urbanisation has changed our lifestyle. There is no longer enough land space to have farms or gardens close to our houses. The price of land has also skyrocketed, making land acquisition for agricultural purposes expensive.

Before now, our parents had jobs that made them work fewer hours. Six to eight-hour jobs were enough to cover the needs of the family. They now have extra time to go to the farm and cultivate crops and raise animals. Inflation and other economic problems have made people have more than one source of income, so they don't have extra time to engage in agriculture.

But your observation is valid. Those who have the time and resources should grow their food because it will save them money and reduce the negative effects of GMOs.

It is due to urbanization, you are no longer in the rural areas where you grew up where it was possible to farm because of the availability of land and the need to. There are people who still have that life, where they grow all the crops they consume and even have animals for meat, milk and eggs. Unless you are able to employ modern farming methods, farming in a fully urbanized area may be difficult especially when you have just personal consumption in mind, and for that reason too, you will not be able to grow a wide variety of crops still and will still have to buy some.

Even as you farm, you may not be able to get everything needed for your sustainability form the farm, but at least, the main ones which are the majority can be gotten from farming them, its a pity to discover that today, many have already lost interest in the practice of agriculture, farming is now a tedious act to do, while many are buying thing they could be producing at inflated rate from the market, because they are not farming it, the demand is high, while the production is low, government are not helping the situation either.

Everybody can not go into farming, but I think farming is very important in every society. I am not talking of farming to just feed your family, but commercial farming.  It's important that this kind of farming should be encouraged by the government,  by giving loans and other incentives that encourage people to go into farming. It might not stop people from buying food items, but it will definitely help in the reduction of food items, because it's is normal in economics that the higher the goods, the lower the price. Using my country as a case study, I think the government does not encourage farmers and that has reduced the numbers of farmers in the society, which I think is very bad. The government need to do more to encourage farmers and the hike in food items will be a thing of the past.

Correct, if it's profitable then no one will quit it, even there's a person who don't want to be a farmer, they can just hire someone to manage their farm. So we can say farm isn't profitable for @OP because he didn't manage his farm nor hire someone else.

I have a friend who have a small/medium farm and they said it's not worth it because the risk they take and the harvest they sold aren't equal.

Import from other countries are cheaper and have better equality, that's also a big reason why the local product can lose.

Times have changed, when you were a child, there was so much empty land that could be used for farming, and now that land has been acquired to build houses or other buildings. Lifestyle changes and increasing living needs are other reasons why you and your family have to buy almost all your kitchen needs. The increasingly busy schedule that takes up more time makes the opportunity to process kitchen needs on the land increasingly limited, perhaps your family's economy is improving so that you choose a more practical alternative route and access to markets that are increasingly easy to reach to buy necessities there.

People were complaining of hunger and poverty, yet you will discover that only few are farming, many on the street are there begging, all because they cant work, while those that can work are making it despite the economy hardship, we choose to become whom we are and not the condition or circumstance that force itself upon us just like that, lets be guided and well informed, that we are to take full responsibility for our own self, the least to fall back on is farming, once we can work, we can earn.

No one mentions that it is increasingly difficult to produce food, given that the climate has changed significantly in the last 20 years (more or less in relation to the location). From my experience, I can say that summers have become so hot with pronounced heat waves that then result in powerful summer storms with hail and strong winds that destroy everything in their path.

Springs are usually very rainy, which in turn favors the development of plant diseases in combination with heat, and winters are relatively mild, which again results in greater pest survival.

When all of that is taken into account, and if you still try to grow something in a healthy, ecological way, then you shouldn't wonder why people give up on producing food. It's not just that land has become less accessible, as people have turned their gardens into relaxation spots with pools and flowers, instead of planting tomatoes and peppers that they can buy in shopping malls anyway, while going to the hairdresser and the casino along the way.

Today's society encourages consumerism and literally says "why produce when you can buy?"

That's true but it's very hard to completely live off the grind or have your own vegetables or even rice. It's because you have to acquire some farm lands and it might not be very cheap right now. I understand your sentiments, but I guess before you can truly become a farmer, as I have said, you need capital and money and you need people to work with you. Been in this situation before, bought a farmland not that big, but enough to harvest rice twice a year. And it's not very easy as I work in the city so I have to entrust everything to someone. But it didn't last that long because of trust issues. So lessons here is that you really need to be hands on too if you want to go in this route.

In my country, farming is  the real deal now so I don't think it is even the least to fall back to but I still agree with you, the thing is some persons just like excuses, they have lands, they have the strength but the prefer to even still than to farm, eat from the farm and sell some to get some money for themselves.
I prefer to use hunger, the hunger in some society is not something someone will just fold his hands and wait for manners to fall from heaven, many people has started thinking wise but some still choose to be idle for the reason best known to them.

A lot have changed now, migration and other things have made some of the things we did in our childhood not possible again. Going to farming is a good move but that will be only if you have the means of growing your own food. There are a lot of factors that will hinder most people from doing that such as land which is rarely available to the average income families. Due to urbanization, people have to resort to buying food from people who are farmers because in the urban cities there are hardly available lands for farming. But those who have the means of growing their food must make it a priority.

You can still farm if you choose to. There are enough lands in the rural areas at an affordable price for farming but the question is, are you ready to leave your comfort zone in the city and move to the rural areas because you want to farm, I guess not.

Nowadays, everyone is looking for a white collar job and not farming. Our generation is more into technology which is why people are no longer considering farming as a means to earn a living. Our parents believe in farming for survival.

I am living in an urban area and that's why farming here is only possible if you have a backyard or a small area where you can make your own gardening. I'm trying to do that but it's quite hard when the soil isn't on the natural one needed by the plants and veggies that I am trying to grow. And since it's about farming, people do say that because of AI, one industry that won't be taken over by it is farming.

I highly doubt you had all you needed in terms of food stuffs and only had to buy rice from the market. Did you have a farm while growing up? Perhaps your meal selection was quite limited? Obviously, I can't say for certain as I haven't a clue as to how you grew up but I think you guys purchased more than rice from the market even if you did have a farm and you just didn't know.
That aside, a lot of people are slowly deviating from farming due to several reasons. Arable land suitable for farming are also slowly reducing over the years and seeing as the times have changed, people are now leaving one of the oldest profession, farming for something seemingly more modern.

If you have money you can always buy some land, build a town house in it and raise all of your food yourself. Grow some chickens, fruits, vegetables… It is easy as hell as to grow them long as you have free time but most of us don’t. That’s why we rely on big corporations for our food.

If you mean we need to back to farming as we need to invest in it, then I’d say big corps are already doing it on a massive scale. As long as you have the money to pay for it, somebody somewhere will be growing some potatoes to sell you.

You can still go back to farming since the money you are receiving from your place of work is not enough for you to buy any kind of food items in your country. For your parents to stop farming maybe they think after you graduate from school you will be the one to be sending them money to buy food items and other things that will make them not to think of farming again.

Here is the situation in my country that the ricefield has been change became an the real estate, the trees in the forest have been completely cut down and plantation land was turned into a factory which these conditions makes the farmers have no jobs anymore even some of them have to working at the factories because they needed money to feed their families
Besides those things above we were faced the different era when young generation doesn't like to be a farmer the reason is because mostly farmers life poor and they don't want it happend to them in the future indeed some people have farm on their backyard but mostly only enough for their daily needs but not for a large scale
