How insensitive can some people get. It is these kind of things that would make some people end up calling superstitious.  The African man will say it is manipulations by powers that'll make you use all your properties for a gamble and loose them. But the real truth us that's all big lie. You engaged yourself in the act. You didn't even stop when you saw that you are really making a loss and also loosing your properties.  For me it is purely insensitivity that would make any individual to get to that extent of gambling.  And for the wifevthat left him she did the best thing.  Maybe that would teach him the lesson that he needs to change for the better.

I would not pay to much attention to what a single man seen in his life. Just to mention MILLIONS of people gambling or have already play.
It seems that certain habits are demonized just to say = if you gamble you are addicted.
If you drink you have a problem with alcohol and so on... I don't see any direct relation. You make what you like but this not means you're not doing nothing wrong or nothing that should create a future issue.

I've heard this kind of story a lot and I've experienced this first hand (not in my family but to a close one) where their father were get addicted in online gambling since it can be access easily on the phone. It's too sad that his family left him behind where they can still do things for him such as letting go into rehab and I think a family support would be the number 1 key to help himself but I think it's too late now since we don't actually know their story. It's really sad to hear this kind of story but it's also nice to share to everyone to keep them in mind that gambling is not just a game, it can destroy lives and family.

Well this doesn't happen intentionally, it usually start from on good morning when they try to test what they don't usually do, due to influence from pear group or intimidation. When your friends begin to tell you that you can't do this or that, calling you a woman not being man enough to try what they do, and if you are not matured to control yourself, you might be triggerd to try out and gradually you begin to blend with the and finally you become addic of what you once criticized. That is simply how addiction begin. And the funny part is it's easy to enter but very difficult to quit. I think you should do an investigation on smokers and drunkards or drug addict or even gamblers, theybwill tell you how they gave tried to stop but finds it difficult. Not that it doesn't give them a concern but they just don't know how to go about it.

We can't blame it all on gambling, as it was originally designed for entertainment. Everything in excess could be dangerous, so it will always depend on how a person approaches a specific thing. Though there are things that are a lot more dangerous than others, gambling is one of them, but still, we are liable for our own actions.
Getting addicted to something is like a mental illness. These people aren't able to comprehend what's right and what's wrong, as they are stuck in their gambling echo chambers. There's nothing a person could do to help this addiction, unless he's willing to help himself.
It's not just excessive gambling that you can lose your money, family, and other important things in your life, but everything in excess in general. Spending too much money or time on something normally ends up in a bad way. Everything should be balanced and controlled.

I guess you could argue that no one probably gets a rush of dopamine because they spend too much time studying or working. But yeah, everything can lead to a problem if you do it excessively.

It would be great if the OP or anyone could provide a source for this specific story, though. Although this is not unique, it's hard to judge or analyze what's going on in that story since everything sounds quite sudden. The lesson is still the same: avoid addiction, but we don't know how the man falls into it other than the fact that someone introduces it to him. Heck, if anything, the first reply is quite interesting and might be worth exploring if the member is fine with it.

Sometimes I used to wonder what they are looking for in gambling because this is getting out of hand, how can a full grown man with wife and kids would go to this extend, it doesn't make sense at all. The truth is that he is not responsible because had it been he is responsible he would have known that this is getting out of hand, but he insisted on chasing losses forgetting that luck plays a significant role in determining the final outcome. This is why I used to tell people that gambling doesn't have any problem, it is we the gamblers that are making things difficult because there's no way you can beat the casino, it's not possible at all.

this is really painful & sadly it happens to many families. Addiction doesn’t start w/ the intention to destroy a home but once it takes control it changes a person’s priorities & judgment. Money that should be for rent, food & children suddenly feels temporary to the addict because they believe one big win or one more try will fix everything. I feel for the wife & children in this situation but I also feel for the man. Addiction is a sickness not just a bad choice, this is why awareness, early intervention & support systems are so important before the damage becomes irreversible. Families should not have to be broken for us to take addiction seriously.

Influenced by peers or desperation, addicts often believe one big win will solve everything, even as losses pile up. But isn't that a fairytale at all?

The deeper truth is that addiction grows gradually and silently, numbing the person to warnings and consequences. By the time reality sets in, we could say it's already too late as families and assets are often already lost, showing that addiction does not just ruin finances but it destroys relationships and lives. That is compulsive gambling and people who get there unfortunately for them most of the time does not end well. I have been myself near such point but I suffered a really heavy losing session that made me think deeply and I got to the conclusion that I need to stop gambling otherwise things will go totally south for me and my life. So I took action and got to every major casino and hit the self-ban option for an indefinite amount of time, meaning forever otherwise. Family is much more important than gambling as during difficult times they are the ones who make it easy for us, the family members so I choose family over gambling and could not be happier about such result.

In a way, there should be references to scientific literature on why people do and get their reward in terms of dopamine. It goes to the part where we feel like the compulsive behavior is done to satisfy that want, and that results in addiction.

IMO, the best way to fight this is to have behavioral therapy guides and to make sure they understand why they shouldn't be doing it. I know that's easy to say, but it's actually hard to do.

The best way is to have a great support system to be there with you in hard times like this.

That's what happens when gambling isn't based on responsibility, I don't need to read online about cases like that because in our area there are also many similar cases. Most tragically, some even ended their lives because they could no longer stand what they were experiencing. I always feel sorry for these wives; they marry the wrong men. I believe that people who cannot control their emotions and easily give in to various passions are somewhat mentally unhealthy. I don't know how or why it starts, but psychologists say it begins in childhood. Influential parents who suppress and ignore their child's opinions, or an environment that makes them feel inferior, can lead to a desire to locate a safe haven. That's why we see that people constantly strive for self-assertion through gambling, wanting to win on a slot machine, but unfortunately, they forget about everything else that society considers their responsibilities.
