Best way to help an addicted gambler

Having him arrested would probably give him the most life-threatening revenge plot. It will be traumatizing for him, and he will probably put that on the one who had him do it to him. I don't think forced stuff would be helpful to a person. Even having him serve military just to prevent him from gambling won't be beneficial.

The best way IMO is to have professional help or any support groups that he can get along with.

the only way, probably... would be just a medical help. If this can't be accessible ask to a local group of gamblers or a player association.
 I would not wast too much energy to find a solution or how to fix the problem alone.
If people have not a specific experience this can be a really bad activity that could end in nothing...

Putting a addicted gambler in jail is not a sustainable way to prevent gambling. I think the family is the most reliable place to prevent addiction. If a boy does not get enough funds from his family, he will not be able to gamble. He should be engaged in a profession that requires him to spend a lot of time at work. The main thing is that you should refrain from choosing gambling as a way to earn money. Gambling should be considered a way of entertainment and should not be played regularly. Whatever you do professionally, you should increase your concentration and also spend time with your family in your free time is a good way to stay mentally and physically healthy.

Perhaps that man can ask his son to go to rehabilitation to cure his addiction. In that place, he and his son can see what method may work for his son.

If he is arrested and locked up for at least 2 years, that can make his son rebel and hate him. But his son needs a soft approach to make him realize his addiction. If he can realize it, he may want to follow his father to rehabilitation.

The main problem of addicted gamblers is their greed, they think that gambling will earn them a lot of money. So what we can do in this case is to change their main goals, in this case, they can earn money in some other sector and make a career, that is, to save them from gambling addiction, we have to take them through this process initially.
Main target is divert them to in a busy schedule where they will able to be earn or any others sector where he will busy most of the time.

First of all, I can bet my tities the elderly man is an African man.... Its only a typical African man that wants to correct a problem by causing more "problems",  and hoping all of the new ones solve the old one. Prisoners that are sometimes given life sentences for first degree murder would kill even in jail, since they're probably on a sentence already. Now let's put that into perspective for this case-- putting him in prison for 2 years will only teach him how to gamble 10,000 miles away from you.

Correctional centers, rehabs, or any other facility for rehabilitation can tackle the issue from a very soft spot. If he truly wants to help himself, he should be okay after this.

It is a good method if there is no other way to get the child out of gambling addiction. Moreover the harsh upbringing of a father who is used to being in a harsh environment and the child already knows the father's character. So it all depends on the family tradition of educating children.

Of course, this is not suitable for those of us who do not have a military background, or do not come from a military family.

Because in certain cases if you have done various subtle ways to make the gambler realize, it is not effective, the method must be a little hard. All that the father does is nothing but to make his son realize that he is a better person.

I mean it is going to go down the hard way, we dont know the specific reason why his son get addicted to gambling but there are various reason and for sure it might even be related to the family problems or something like that but lets just focus on the problem since we are already assumed that the son is a gambling addict that do not stop to gamble. Whose son is going to be happy that his father sent him to prison? The second thing is that it is unlawful. That son is not going to be happy at all with his father and that may not stop his addiction if the problem is not what that is tackled. I will also say that his father is self-centered and not knowing that he is wicked. The professional way is to seek for rehab instead. But to be sincere, a son that do nothing wrong to deserve jail can not be sent to jail.

Not all problem should be tackled with force and I really think that parent should try and know this.....Locking up his son wouldn't solve anything this is coz even if he stays 2-5 yrs away from gambling, immediately he is freed and he sees a little opportunity,.he begins gambling all over again thereby re triggering that addiction. Apart from even retriggering his addiction licking up your son will make his son to hate him for life...That is why it is better for him to meet with a counselor or a psychologist. Many of this professionals have dealt with lots of addiction cases and they will know how best to help and treat the boy, without causing any kind of mental damage.

We can't blame the father as he is already thinking radical solution to address the gambling problem of his son. And he believes that would be the best way to address it. Who knows, it can really help his son alter his lifestyle for the better. But if there are other lighter options to resolve the situation, why not?

But I will blame him, all I see in this case is the man is too much in a hurry to showcase his power if not among every other option he could have chosen to use other option let it be that he have tried before locking the guy up is the only option left, if I’m the son after that 2yrs I will definitely consider my father to hate me so much and was just looking for opportunity to lock me behind close doors.

Honestly that sounds more harmful than helpfu, addiction isn’t something you fix by force or isolation, locking someone up for two years might stop the gambling temporarily, but it doesn’t deal with why he’s addicted in the first place, once he’s out, chances are he goes right back to it, maybe even worse.

This is quite a radical method. Military service will help him learn discipline, that's for sure, but he may return to his old habits after a while if he doesn't have an educational conversation with him.He need real examples of what can happen if he plays without control and doesn't think about the consequences. don't need to scare him need to guide him onto the right path,and this should be done by an authority figure in his life whom he respects.Then there is a chance that it will work.

Possible that instead of making things better it might cause bigger problem, knowing that if his son take that action seriously even he got arrested and be lock for that long his personal relation with his father might be ruined, unless the father still have that authority I mean if he still got the respect of his son so even he will take that kind of action may help his son to forget about his gambling participation, maybe it helps in a way that the person will prevent losing more money but also need to take note if what's the after effect of this action in terms of his son's relationship to him.

The only good part about this military man's style is that his son will not have access to gambling for a long time. And this might help to reduce his desire or the urge to gambling. Gambling might no longer be his priority since he wouldn't engage in it for a long time. It's like locking up a drug addict for a long time, they would naturally lose the taste for drugs
 
Arresting and locking someone is an infringement on the fundamental rights of the person. Isolation or forced imprisonment could also lead to other harmful mental health problems. Instead of adopting this pattern, the some should be sent to a health facility that handles addiction problems.

Putting someone in jail just to make them stop gambling is an ineffective solution. Many people lose everything, go to jail, and yet return to gambling once they are released. Punishment alone does not address the root of the problem. A better approach is to educate people about risk management and self control. Gambling is not something that can be stopped easily, it becomes like a parasite living inside them. The real challenge lies in how we manage that parasite. If we fail to control it, we see the consequences people wasting large amounts of money, becoming angry after losses and losing control of their behavior

It would only cause more harm, I don't think taking him away against his will and by force is great idea. I think the way better option is not letting him go to jail but would rather send him to rehabilitation center, since he can literally rehabilitate there rather than locking him up and it would add more stress and probably anger to you, unlike in therapies, they have a way to let you change your perspective. This is the best option since if he agreed, he will voluntarily make changes in his life but if he doesn't even want to go to rehabilitation, I think that's the good use of the military influence to force him to rehabilitation and not to jail as jail have different purpose than sending an addicted (unstable) person.

Nah, not a fan of locking up the son, such remedies might keep the addict from gambling because well... he's locked but desire must be there in his mind and as soon as he comes out of jail it won't take much time before he falls for same old things.

Also, there must be will from addicted person himself to get rid of an addiction otherwise no outside remedies are going to help.

Not really the ideal thing to do. It is just like he tortured his son. It may stop addiction, but on the other hand, it fuels hatred and mental issues. Unless he can afford to see his son in such a situation. What he needs is more guidance and proper education. Stopping him for a few weeks will be enough to change his behavior rather than putting him in jail. 

Not all problems will be solved in the hardest way. Maybe there is another reason why his son became like that, and he missed it.
