If I understood correctly hacker made address with same first and last four symbols. I wonder how powerful computer hacker has if he is able to create address like that.

I remember when I tried to create vanity address with some text in first 6 symbols of the adddress and it took me hours on my laptop.
So I believe that hacker controls some serious computing power in order to pull off something like that.

This kind of mistake is actually made when you are in a hurry and since the fraudsters have changed their fraud tactics with the changing times, the user has to be on the highest alert otherwise your hard earned money can go to the fraudster at any time. What happened here is really sad and I would say that it was actually a lack of patience, the user's indifference to check multiple times which is why this happened. It is difficult for me to accept that he is sending such a large amount and he does not have the patience to check multiple times.
One thing I have noticed about bitcoin and cryptocurrencies,  you need to take your time to do things especially when it comes to transaction, when handling things that has to do with external subjects and if you are too much in haste you may run into the hands of scammers.  A lot of people dont really go through the address if it is correct or not, once it looks familiar like the one they want to use they just proceed. Bitcoin requires patience and multiple confirmation of every step you want to take.

The error of some people's don't come from seeing a familiar wallet and just clicking to confirm some person's use the wrong approach to conduct transactions. They copy and paste their wallet from transaction history, which can lead to errors in mistaking a wallet for what's not yours.
Before we even talk about clipboard virus, where the copied address can change to a hackers' own, which if you are not careful enough, even when looking, you might mistake both wallets.

I think I used to be part of that “a lot of people” you mentioned there, because I usually don’t have the luxury of double checking addresses before simply pasting the wallet and initiating the transaction. Honestly I didn’t see any need of going through it over and over again, well not until something happened to someone online, I saw how their wallet was completely drained simply because they failed to double check their information, they only got to realize after the damage has been done.
I don’t wait till stuffs happen to me first, I’d eager just learn from others

I just keep imagining the loss. $50m. That's too much to be lost just like that.

One of the major problem to this is the nature of the address. It's just too long and scattered that sometimes, users tend to be tired, too lazy and see it as too difficult to cross check before hitting send. But with cases like this, one don't need to get tired or lazy. It's your money and time put into work that yielded the money. So everyone should be on the alert. Scammers aren't giving up. Everyday they are online looking for a victim, developing apps and all other nonsense just to use and defraud people. We must be careful. The crypto space is highly technical. If you loose, it is all gone and there is nothing you can do about.

You don't need powerful computer to do this.

Since actually what you need is to create a custom address thru vanity to create similar address. Here you can read it on how you can do it https://medium.com/blockchain-biz/vanity-addresses-how-to-create-your-unique-bitcoin-and-ethereum-address-cf90cbbed409

This is also the reason why many scam attempts posted by OP increase. Since criminals can customize their BTC address and could try to make it similar to their target wallets.

That situation actually the reason its not good for anyone to copy the address from their transaction history. Because they might fall from dust attacks or any similar attempts.

You can not compare yourself with this scammers. This is their full time job, so it's not really a big deal for them. They can dedicate time as much as possible trying to figure things out about their potential victim.

Of course, they study the victim and know what they worth before embarking on the process. Just imagine yourself going after $50m deal, won't you dedicate time? Knowing how huge the amount is if you succeed.

I'm just surprised how the victim fall for that easily. I can not be sending assets worth that amount and be that careless.

Since the amount was so large, this person should have been more aware. First of all, I am not clear on this matter why he sent such a huge amount of money to an address that is unknown to him. That is why I spoke because if he had sent dollars to a known address, then these funds would have reached the specific person but he may not have been in a hurry or he did not double-check it after copying and pasting. Even when I do not have to transfer a minimum amount of money, I still check the receiver's address multiple times because I do not want to take these risks. If this person had checked and confirmed each digit manually after copying and pasting, he might not have lost such a huge amount of money. Anyway, this is a big lesson for others, I hope everyone will be careful from here and check the address multiple times before confirming the transaction.

I must be honest and admit that I also check just a few first anda few last digits. But on the other hand I don't send such large sums, probably if I had I'd probably be paranoid about it and check every single digit a few times.

BTW. I checked transactions in OP and I wonder why did scammer send back 0.005 USDT before main transaction?

To become a hacker or scammer in this era is paying more than people who want to follow the right path of life, I was at a location this morning to deliver an item and I was discussing the amount to ship the items out.

The charges was too much and I complained then I told the man that I am not new to this shipping thing that I was still there some weeks back, he asked me how much I payed which is half of what I was asked to pay today.

He went on and said that people don't want to say the truth no more, that we are all benefitting from lies than the truth, that he dares me to say the truth, until I showed him the past receipt, he was shocked that I said the truth.

Evil ways are paying more than the good, this is what the world has turned into.

Even if you send a small amount of money, I think it is necessary and mandatory to verify a person. Because if we do not verify small transactions, then at some point we will not be willing to verify large transactions. Be it small or big transactions, I always verify several times before making a transaction. Because a small mistake can cause us a lot of loss or we can get into a big mess, so being careful in advance is the best decision.

I know many people who do not verify and because of this they have faced many problems in the past. Although their amount was very small, why would I send it to someone else. So be it small or big transactions, every person should verify several times

Yes you are saying the right thing, whether big or small transaction you need to verify it very well, a small transaction is still very important and if you form the habit of not verifying a small transaction one day you will make a mistake not to verify a big transaction and you may end up losing money if there's a mistake in the transaction, so it is better to always verify any transaction you are doing no matter how small it is, when you keep doing this it will become a habit inside you and immediately you want to do a transaction your mind will tell you to verify before proceeding.

It's hard to be careful no matter how much you try, mistakes are bound to happen, I don't blame the sender in any way, this usually happens especially to those who sends crypto everyday, who never thinks to crosscheck before sending because it had been a thing, and so what's the need to check when transactions has always been a successful one.

The kind of scam in the industry nowadays is address checking, scammers stalking your address and receives notifications whenever it sends or receives transaction, so they could enable address posioning or whatever scam tricks between your transaction at the moment.

It's real and these scammers taking the game higher too.

In crypto everything is important and needs double-checking before having the last click because most of them are always not reversible. Always keep things under your control before dispatch; otherwise, nothing positive is going to happen. People are losing money just because they are careless; they try to do things quickly and then face consequences.
In my early days I also faced few issues because I was never giving time to myself for having something checked, but once I lost a big amount, then I realized my mistake and started giving enough time because I was never able to have my funds back, and this big loss was life-changing for me, but it's also given enough lessons now. Every transaction before going out I have double-checked, and I have never faced any issue.

While he did the first test of transferring first, I'd make sure another test transaction that could give me more securing thoughts that I can peacefully send that $50M. Even a couple of thousands, I'll test and make sure it first before sending. We can learn here that despite that we're aware of that technique, still the scammers have their eyes on those wallet addresses that have huge amounts. It is probably a money that he's set for life but I feel bad that these scammers are just there waiting for that opportunity. They can attain to feed their fam with stolen money.
It should not be surprising to know that scammers are in the increase because many of us who are since and committed diligently working with honesty are not investing in knowledge as much as our investments, bit for the scammers they pay to improve there knowledge in crime so they can continue to make money from crime. They learn coding and site development to have deep understand about about it, then watch and wait for available opportunity strike

The time you spent in attempting to create a vanity address seemed to have been to long for you cause you were doing it for a genuine reason. Gor the hackers that time is does not look too long provided it gives them what they are after.

This guys can be patient in studying a pattern and steps on how to hack into any system or rip off a victim. It does not matter if it going to take them days to get what they want. It is not mainly about the sophisticated workstations and computing powers they  may have hands on. It also has much to do with their patient in getting what they want..

It is that patient that lot of us ordinary day to day users of the internet space lacks in using it to do our dew diligence on what performance we are about to execute, and that part of what the hackers are using to prey on us.

I'm just surprised how the victim fall for that easily. I can not be sending assets worth that amount and be that careless.

I must be honest and admit that I also check just a few first anda few last digits. But on the other hand I don't send such large sums, probably if I had I'd probably be paranoid about it and check every single digit a few times.
I check the first few digits, the last few digits, random 3 digits in the middle and look out for some digits repetition. I do this for small transactions and transactions upto $10k. I don't actually know what my behaviour will be like if I am to send upto $500k through crypto, let alone $1M.

In the Op, it was said the victim made a successful test transaction of $50, to me, that was not enough. I would have matched all the digitals and verified.

BTW. I checked transactions in OP and I wonder why did scammer send back 0.005 USDT before main transaction?
Maybe the hacker did a test transaction to be sure they were moving it to their right address  Grin

This fella was tricked, he sent all this heavy amount into a fake address that looks almost the same with the original, this is why we need to becareful when we are copying address especially people using laptops to make transactions, the last time I witnessed this similar loss happened to a laptop user.
~
If I understood correctly hacker made address with same first and last four symbols. I wonder how powerful computer hacker has if he is able to create address like that.

I remember when I tried to create vanity address with some text in first 6 symbols of the adddress and it took me hours on my laptop.
So I believe that hacker controls some serious computing power in order to pull off something like that.

One needs to verify the address you are sending your funds to severally before sending it, you don't make transaction when you are not stable mentally and otherwise, it can lead to this kind of loss, if you are not focused or stress free transactions can be made later, everything about Bitcoin is all about patience, if you lack it, then look for it, I think this persons will seriously be regretting his actions.

Scammers are always by the corners watching our activities for easy penetration of our accounts and yet we joke with everything about securing our Bitcoin

I still believe that laptops, PC and android phones are a bad way of storing cryptocurrency, most of the time when these devices are infected you won't know, I believe this is what happened to this victim, he should have gotten a hardware wallet rather, to send coins you don't even need to copy paste.

They are capable gadgets none the less and I don’t consider them any less potent to use for transactions without running into issues neither would I say, some users don’t open their devices up to vulnerabilities and scams.
What’s more advisable from my stand point is that, people having to perform these huge transactions shouldn’t do so or have their wallet on the devices they use everyday and can be accessed by other persons. All it takes is one click on the wrong file, ads or folder and you’ve successfully installed a malware on your device and the resulting always devastating.

That is true that mistakes can happen and there will be times that we can't skip that. But saying that it's hard to be careful, I think we need to remember that it's harder to keep on falling for these scams.

Having some extra care for these types of transactions is better than thinking that no matter what you do, nothing will improve.

There's still we can do just as you have said, it's best to crosscheck and don't only look at the first/last characters of the wallet addresses before sending. Check it thoroughly and slowly.
