(do tell if this has been posted before, i just learned the story today)

According to the Cohasset Police Department, the director of facilities for the Cohasset Middle/High School called the police in Dec. 2021 after noticing out-of-place electrical wires, computers and temporary ductwork. With the assistance of the town’s IT director, detectives located a cryptocurrency mining operation, connected to the school’s electrical system, in a crawl space.

anyway i am thinking if this happened in trump’s administration, would the government seize the bitcoins he owned? i wonder if his sentence would be any different in a somewhat more friendly crypto environment now?

I think that this kind of affair would not matter administration wise because if something is being created illegally, should not be the consequences be that the government seize it? I think that is how they do it, even before Trump was in politics, bitcoins or any cryptocurrency involved in illegal activities are always seized, remember the capture of the Silk Road's creator, they seized his bitcoin and was later auctioned if I recall. There should be a part in that article that would describe what happened to the bitcoin mined in that school, I mean as a part of being informed, the author of that news should have included that part. In regards to sentencing, I think that the matter would be lighter definitely but I think that there will still be firmness because they still used the school's resources without permission and outside of its intended purposes.

Mining illegally means stealing from your government, what do you expect? That they should use part of the mined Bitcoin to settle the bills  and give the rest back to him if any is left right after? There is a possibility that he will do such again in another location, they have all the excuse to never surrender the Bitcoin to him and that includes those Asic miners too..

United States has never been friendly toward anything they can not fully control and censor and that has never changed with different administrations. This is the regime's policy which presidents must follow.

As for seizure, it is a big complicated because the mining hardware is what can be seized. The coins are not necessarily stored there to be seized. The owner could have simply held them in cold storage and refuse to give them up or even declare how much they own to the court.

Even if the government is friendly with cryptocurrencies, should the government be friendly with something that is illegal? A miner that is mining with school electricity. The school will pay for the electricity but the miner will earn all the money from the mining without paying for electricity. That is thievery.

About Trump becoming friendly to crypto, it is more about becoming friendly to people with selfish intentions and himself and his family.

What we must first understand is that this is a violation of the law. electricity theft, putting schools in dire straits by having to pay higher bills due to the theft. Regardless of whether the country is crypto friendly or not, this is still a violation and will be punished according to applicable laws.
Regarding the confiscation of crypto assets obtained from mining, I'm not confident the assets will be confiscated. They've already gone this far and are capable of securing them, even in other places.
A similar case occurred in my country, the perpetrator had to pay several bills and was jailed.

Mining with the school electricity without proper authorisation with the school authorities is a crime and a violation of the law of the country which should be treated accordingly to serve as deternt to others,if the case is not properly handled another may cope it.

I don't think it makes any difference whether it was during the previous administration or the current one. Because these activities are illegal, all devices and bitcoins generated from them will be confiscated by the government, and the perpetrators will be punished according to applicable law. Even though the current administration is more cryptocurrency-friendly, criminal acts are still criminal acts, and nothing can be justified.

this happens every single cycle and people still get surprised, btc leads the way then it takes a breather while liquidity flows down to the smaller caps, if you look at the dominance chart it usually hits a local top before the real altseason begins, i wouldnt say the run is over but maybe just boring for a few weeks, btc needs to build a solid base here if we want to see six figures later this year, just be patient or go gambling on those low caps if you have the stomach for it but dont complain when they dump 90 percent in a day lol

Since the guy here is mining Bitcoin using the school's electricity, he has made a serious mistake because stealing school electricity and mining Bitcoin is a crime for him. Now if the Trump administration punishes him severely for this, he must accept it because he has taken over the entire school's electricity for Bitcoin mining, which is one of the worst things he has done. Now no matter how much of a cryptocurrency lover Trump is, he has to pay for his mistake. However, in my opinion, he should keep his Bitcoin and be fined so that no one dares to do such a thing in the future.

I check the article and it is not mentioned if they seized the Bitcoins but it is only said on the title that the man was charged. They did not state how much the amount but the man stole $18k in power during his mining operations. So maybe that was also the equivalent amount that was charged to him.

If you ask if there is a changed on his sentence if this happened this time, I think there is and that is the government will seized the Bitcoin. So, the guy is only lucky there because he can just sell his Bitcoins back then and used it to pay for the fine that is being charged to him. What makes him more lucky is he might still end up earning something from the mined coins that he sold.

Trump's, Biden's or whoever it is, stealing electricity is stealing. Doing it without the permission of the bulding owner, it's inappropriate to do it and liable for a crime that can be said of that activity.

The guy even put the place into danger by having those faulty wires that could cost him more than what he has mined for around $18k worth of Bitcoin.

He has put not just the facility into danger but also the people that works there and as well as the students.

You are asking the punishment for illegal work will be given or not.

It depends on whether they care caught or not which they already are.

If they are students and have done this for fist time, same relaxation might be provided. But a lesson should be taught so that they do not repeat the same mistake again.

If it's happening during trump's era. That's obvious the bitcoin who being mined illegally will be seized, and went to the treasury. However, this news is an old news. There's no update regarding what happened to the guy and his bitcoin that already mined.

I thought if he would not be greedy enough by putting so much machines, his illegal mining may still run till now. The official noticed it just after there was 17k electricity bill increase.

anyway i am thinking if this happened in trump’s administration, would the government seize the bitcoins he owned? i wonder if his sentence would be any different in a somewhat more friendly crypto environment now?

The crypto-friendliness of the administration has nothing to do with this, because even if the person was doing something that is generally legal if done in the correct way, he was doing it illegally because he wasn't using his own electricity or paying taxes for his mined coins, he was stealing electricity from the school, and probably wasn't paying taxes for his mining. So, no matter whose administration it was in, he would still have the same sentence that he deserves for theft of electricity and tax evasion, and just because Trump and his administration is crypto friendly, it doesn't mean they are not going to punish those who do illegal things involving cryptocurrencies.

I wonder why people do such things. If you have enough funds to buy the equipment and everything, you should also bear the electricity expenses for your mining activities if you are serious about it, trying shortcuts and doing it illegally would surely not let you keep doing that forever, and you should know that you will get caught eventually.

His offense is stealing electricity and vandalizing the property of the school. There are laws that have a provision for the length of the sentence he would receive. The equipment will be seized, and he might be asked to pay the amount of electricity he stole from the school. The crime happened in Massachusetts, and I don't think they have a law that makes provision for a Bitcoin reserve. Which means that the coins will be sold and used to cover the cost of prosecution and the stolen energy.
