Everyone that choose full 30 years annual payment seems to forget about "inflation"

while everyone that choose to keep the lump sum seems to forget about "taxes"

I wonder how much taxes will he be paying on that $845 million tho. (that's if he decides to take the lump sum, which is the smarter idea) I can imagine at least 30% of that money going to the government in taxes. So if my assumption is correct, he won't be having more than $500 million which is still huge.

Actually he will be keeping the range of around $400 -$500 million after taxes which is incredibly huge. On top of that, its cash so the winner is pretty much rich rich then some self proclaimed millionaires that are rich from shares networth.

Best course of action would be to keep the lump sum and diverse it into few class asset. If he can keep the annual return rate over 5% annually then in 30 years or less the amount should be over $1.817bn.

An unidentified individual has won the second-largest lottery prize ever claimed (the first was $2.04bn jackpot won in 2022). The winner bought lottery tickets for $2 each, and the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

The winner has the option of taking a lump-sum cash payment of $834.9m or getting the full amount that was won in an annuity paid over 29 years.

Would you take the lump sum or choose to receive your payments in small amounts for 29 years?

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwyw4x39jdwo

If it were me, I would choose the lump sum right away, because that's real money and you would have control over that money right away. And that $834.9 million is already a huge amount for me. Unlike the $1.817 billion, it is indeed large, but how sure are you that they will give you that amount over 29 years in installments?

Besides that, you don't even have control over your money yet, and in my opinion, you are being quite greedy if you look at it you only spent $2 on the ticket and yet $834.9 million isn't enough for you, when in truth that amount could already be considered too much for the $2 ticket you bought. This is just my opinion.

Would i take less then half immediately and let go of $982 million dollars before taxes? Maybe if i didn't have kids.

There's no question that i would take small amounts in 29 years. Who knows, taxes might even drop during that time and i could get even more.

No matter how i would mess up my financial situation at first year, i would get $62,7 million dollars every year for next 28 years. Only way i could probably mess that up is by taking insane loans with high interests.

I am not sure if i am even alive in 29 years, but my kids would be pretty happy to keep getting that money, and even if i would put that $834.9M to high interest bank account, i wouldn't get as much in my life time as with dividing it to 29 years.

First, this is a very huge win and this individual is not suppose to be poor again in his life time no matter the option of payment that he choose to be paid with.

Now, talking about the payment option, I would prefer it is spread out because on the other way it will look like an investment that the proceed will be coming at interval and with that you can plan with it as it is coming. Another advantage is incase you are robbed or scammed, you are just going to lose few percentage paid to you. It looks like mortgage too.

But to collect the money at once is risky because of scam and misuse.

First, I believe it's a publicity stunt.

Secondly, how will a jackpot winning be taxed that high from 24% to 37% by government according to the article attached.

Thirdly, I don't really understand the part of getting lump sum that doesn't equal the amount mentioned that the gambler won. The difference is huge, almost a $1 billion.

What's missing there?

And again I see there are people who are lucky in the lottery, why haven't I? LOL I'm going to cash in now and hit my friend on the head and say, hey I'm successful now. Tongue

We don't know the truth about this very big win, whether it was just advertising or manipulation carried out by the bookies to introduce their lottery and increase bettors in this modern era or whether it was true that it was a real win, the winner whose face was covered is very suspicious of things about the truth even though I understand the purpose is very good for the safety of the winner.

Never mind, don't be too motivated to gamble on the lottery as usually the chances are small and you don't have high hopes of winning it, it takes a lot of time from the previous big win in the lottery.

How small is the amount to be paid for 29years, but is they can offer $834.9m as lump cash take out then 29 years is too long to give out the full payment.
What ever the winner chooses they have financial freedom for as long as they live.
I will go for the payment over 29years but first I have to consider how small the payment will be, the odd to win 1 in 292.2. Million is astonishing.

Wow. Crazy odds to win from. Some people are really that lucky huh.

Honestly, I'm not sure if I can trust myself too keep that much money. It is such a big leap from my current lifestyle, thus just to be sure, I would just choose to receive the prize in increments and work it from there. But with $1.8 billion in total, the yearly would still be pretty huge especially if you came from middle class, and thus entails a lot of opportunities. 🤝

Congratulations to the winner. I hope he handles the money well.

Would you take the lump sum or choose to receive your payments in small amounts for 29 years?
I wonder how much is the "small amounts" is. because I checked on chatgpt and it says that monthly payment would be roughly, $2.8M per month after taxes according to their estimation. Anyway, personally, I'd still take the lump sum, since I'd have more freedom to use and invest it on things that I want and won't be limited to $2.8M per month(estimation by chatgpt).

It makes very much sense that you are suspicious about how the lottery winners seem to be transparent because it is hard to draw the line between the chance and the marketing tactics. Crypting identities, in fact, casts doubts on the genuineness of such big business transactions in the midst of the very competitive gambling environment. We should not forget about our common sense that the chances of winning are low, and, therefore, there is no sense that we should overestimate our expectations. This is what makes us not get in the trap of misleading illusions so skillfully by service providers.

A fucking, regular, annual scam. Imagine only getting 800 million out of 1.8 billion. What the fuck is this?  Angry
Considering that the lottery allocates around 50% of the collected funds to winnings, imagine the RTP of a player who decides to pay taxes. It's 20-25%. For such an offer at a land-based casino (to play a game with such an RTP), you could get punched in the face.
And naturally, it’s better to take it right away, even with paying taxes - in 10 years, inflation will turn those almost two billion into dust, and in 29 years, into ash.

If I am given the opportunity to win this kind of amount, I would prefer to choose the option of receiving the smaller amount gradually for 29 years, rather than receiving it all at once and losing such a large amount of money. In fact, this kind of payment method would make me think more carefully and take better decisions about the money. If it is paid at once, it is very possible that the amount may cause someone to make wrong decisions by spending it carelessly. However, since it is paid over 29 years, it is possible that even if I make a wrong decision at first, I would be able to correct it later and make uses of the rest of the money so well.

Wow!! This is very unbelievable win!! this kind of huge and mouth watery amount is definitely a life changing amount, i will personally just take lump sum because that gives perfect control of the money with instant assurance, even if at the end it will be reduced down all because of some tax deduction, but a bird in hand is worth more than two in the bush. in the lump sum is smartly invested, then it can grow much bigger than the annuity. the option of 29 years is good and perfect for some poeple who might worry and fear the mindset of spending funds too fast.

As far as there will be a guarantee that the company will not fold before the time at which they will pay me all the money, I will prefer to take it little by little till the agreed time, because winning that kind of money when you don't expect it and getting the money all at once will be tempting. It's better I receive it small and know what to do with it.

As long as I can will it to my next generation or my children, I will take the small payout untill 29 years, if we divide the amount monthly or annually, we can see that what is being paid out is still very much good to cover once living expenses for the month if all things remain equal, however it's not possible I will leave a cut for anyone after winning such lottery. And this is one of the most luckiest news ever because 2$ to each ticket is nothing very many can ever win in their life time so the winner is definitely the most lucky person ever. even if they have been spending on gambling or jackpot for a long term with 2$ each price it's nothing compared to the amount won, this is to say that the amount won is way beyond what has been everly lost to gambling.

This is the best Christmas present ever; this is every lottery bettor's ultimate dream, hitting the impossible. If I were in the guy's shoes, I would prefer to get the full payment and have complete control of my winning, and probably convert a significant percentage to Bitcoin.
I hope the guy has a good plan for that huge amount of money and will not resort to luxury living, though he could.

If nothing shady happens to the money like getting withheld by organizers or even government, I might consider but I think at this moment! I'm leaning towards getting the loop sum amount because that would really go a long way. Even if the winner just puts only half of that in a bank account or investment account like money market and gets 5% per annum, that's already huge. But damn, that's the true definition of 1 in a million. Actually 1 in hundreds of millions.

A 1 in 292.2 million chance is extremely lucky to hit that jackpot, and a $2 for $1.817bn is unthinkable, but it did happen.
His family and the next generation to follow will enjoy extraordinary lives because of that winning,
I prefer to get the full amount, deposit it in a bank as a time deposit, and buy Bitcoin. Of course, I'll get a financial adviser to ensure that the large amount of money isn't lost to extravagant spending.

Can we talk about the taxes that were deducted from this money? This is not looking like jackpot won by individual but won for the government. Is there any kind of social impact the government make as contribution to this lottery because that tax is too big. That money can do alot in any country, even finance a big project the government can show for people.

I will go with the cash payments and get my life together, I don't know if the company is going to be around for 29 years from now, I don't know if I'm going to be alive too in the next 29 years, we have not also talk about inflation, that money in 29 years is going to be worth nothing and I don't know how what will happen between the casino. I will take that money and go start a life. If that money is well invested, he can make double of that money in 10 years.

Would you take the lump sum or choose to receive your payments in small amounts for 29 years?

I’d honestly choose this kind of payment method. That’s way too much money to risk losing all at once, even if it’s a lump sum. I don’t really get why they even offer that option. Also, one bad move and that money could be gone fast as well.

Getting paid over 29 years won’t make me poor anyway, or my family, even if I don’t make it all the way to the end. It’s just the smarter move for me. Around $62 million a year is already more than enough to live a good life and still have room to invest.

Really lucky winner. If I were in that position, I’d do the same without thinking twice.

Can we talk about the taxes that were deducted from this money?

Based on what i research this kind of big winning would be tax up to 37%, therefore the total wining (net of tax) is only $1.14 billion.. which is still huge since its still billion.
