Visual/text indicator for recently bumped old topics

I first had this idea last month, when I saw this post by @The Sceptical Chymist:

Gah!!!!  You tricked me into meriting the OP by necrobumping this thread (my fault for not reading the date, of course).

Recently, there has also been some newbies necrobumping threads, and some users also fail to notice the date. So I thought it would be nice if we can easily identify an old topic at a glance.
I was thinking of either a visual or text indicator for old topics that have been recently bumped, just to give awareness to readers. Maybe something like the note for self-moderated topics:



We can even change the size and color to make it more noticeable:



Do you think something like this should be implemented?

The text phrase on that area is very uncommon, if you're already used to the forum looks or SMF forum looks, you will eventually notice that note/warning in that area. Because common or most of the threads doesn't have text there.

What made you think that it is a mistake when sending merit?
An old post still has value even many years later and what prevent Bitcoin forum ogs or new members to send their merit to a valuable post even it is an old one posted years ago.

Bitcoin and me (Hal Finney). Is it deserved to get merits for forum members, years ago, now and in the future? It is well deserved with merit.

Yes, this is actually where I based my text . But if I'm not mistaken, this warning disappears once a user makes a new reply. That's why other members (especially those who only read the OP) might not notice that they are replying to an old topic -- hence the idea.

What made you think that it is a mistake when sending merit?

I think it was designed to display to whomever writes the newest reply, but not to others. Reasons could have been that if one person necro-bumps in recent time, post to the last old reply, it's not considered an old topic/thread anymore since it had a recent date and a new reply.

 In this case, checking on the date for validation can help; Chymist, just like myself and everyone else, in our usual hastiness, may forget to check on every detailing on the OP, so mistakes like this are bound to happen. If we can tell the differences at a glance, then it'll solve 80% of the other micro problems!

There use to be a warning sign display to individual by opening an old existing thread, that its been over 120 days since the last post had been made, but this is not what everyone can see by clicking on the thread, instead, when we wanted to make a post that we receive this prompt warning, which i still see that its ok being like that, at least, we should read through the last post of a thread before making our own to know when last it was being active.

Some users like JJG have the habit of going through old posts to read through and he usually give merits to those posts that deserve them. Giving merit to old posts is not generally a mistake unless the user made it open that those merits were sent in error.

The forum already have a solution to this issue as explained by @Obim34, no need of Theymos and his team going through the stress of going over that to align with the way you described because what we have is enough.

I know that you want something to indicate a topic that have been bumped, that is commented on for the first time after several weeks or months. I don't see the need for that since when a topic is bumped, it comes to the top of the thread and when you open it, you can easily see it has been bumped.

I still don't get the purpose of the notification you want to see on old thread. Are you against the fact that people merit old post or people decided to reply an old post with frequent bump.

Just like you screenshoted, there are couple of Satoshi threads that get atleast a merit in a week, some old members receive merit from their old threads and that's because people find those post interesting and helpful. I sometimes visit some old thread of 2021 and below when I feel like. There is no rule that says an old post should be ignore unless the replies are generic words, AI and spam.

I'm not sure if I'm the only person that has noticed, there is this behavior I have seen in some threads that are bumped recently on some boards. When a thread is idle for long term, it shows warning that "this post is more than 120 days......." But as soon as the first reply is posted, the thread becomes active again. The warning faded away immediately. This is how old thread are recycled with spams over and over again.

I suggest it remain active until after 7 or more post before the warning can disappear.

Yes, the warning disappears after the user replies to the old topic since it is back inactive topic to an active topic. But i still don't get why a member of this forum won't check the date the topic was created before contributing, unless the aim is just to maintain the daily quota.
I have come across many topics like that, and once i see that there's no importance in bringing the conversation back i skip it.

Well I don't really know about others but even while I am surfing the forum most of the time when I try to reply a thread I'll look at this date of creation of the thread and probably the date of the last reply to see if it's an active thread this is relatively as fast as reading this same message you are proposing.

Something tells me I've seen a quite similar message one way or the other on the forum but for some reason I just can't pinpoint how and where.

I think you guys misunderstood, I'm not against that at all, nor is it the point of this topic. In fact, I even sent a few merits recently to contributions from 2019-2023, that I personally find useful.
Maybe I'm just really bad at explaining, so I apologize for the confusion. I've edited the OP to include the quote and highlight my main point, hopefully it becomes clearer.

This is exactly my thoughts! Basically, only the user who already necrobumped the thread sees/saw the warning, hence my proposal.

Yes, there's room for mistakes as a human, and I also once did it, which is when I learn to always check the date of every discussion before contributing.
Having said that, everything we have said is just our opinion, but if Theymos and other global mods see that there's a need for it, they can choose to integrate it next year.
