Ofcourse, it's somewhat connected to Gaza issue, and due to hostile countries like Yemen and her short proximity to Somaliland and Israel. And also indirectly about Ethiopia access to red Sea. Ethiopia is probably the only country in the horn of Africa that usually side with Israel, and she desperately needs a direct or better access to the the Sea, but the forces against her, such Egypt, and certain other Arab(muslim) countries are constantly and strongly working against it.
Ethiopia eventually "got lucky" and was able to make a deal with Somaliland for longterm lease of her port/seashore for red Sea accesss in exchange for recognizing her as independent country, but Egypt,, Somalia etc worked against it. Somaliland remains persistent, and even visited Ethiopia to signal her interest in the continuation of the deal despite Ethiopia probably caving in to pressure from Somalia, Turkey, Egypt etc. Somalia had asked Ethiopia to get the sea access through its government rather than Somalilands' who she said remains part of Somalia.
So it's very likely that Israel is doing this to help Ethiopia and for her own interest. I believe Somaliland who is more stable than Somalia, deserves to be a country but under some kind of protection and guidance from a much better country like Ethiopia.
I was wondering why this was popping up in the news now and the gaza connection explains a lot, if israel can get a friendly port or at least a friendly neighbor near the bab el mandeb strait it changes their whole security situation, but man ethiopia is really stuck between a rock and a hard place with egypt watching their every move, do you really think somaliland can survive as an independent state if the rest of the arab world is against them, it feels like they are betting everything on this one deal with ethiopia
