I've heard of it, and I'm even from Brazil, but in this case, so far I've never heard of anyone who has won anything. Is this lottery really real?

I wish we had one where I live now yet we have a lottery every week here on national TV, in fact there are a couple though the people that play them usually are old people in age, people who know nothing about slot machines, casinos and online gambling. They just try their luck and I see often these lotteries which are 15 from 90 and 6 from 42 that run every week and as I said their winners are over 50 of age at least, this not to say something about the people who play them nor that I judge them but what I want to explain is that there is no real big participation in these type of lotteries. I don't know if this will change if for example we had a type of lottery once every year though in 31 December this 15 from 90 offers a relatively large prize, an apartment valued 300.000-500.000 EUR, of course totally irrelevant compared to 182 million dollars.

Lol, when you said "to pay out 1 billion reais today". I thought someone already won, and the lottery is going to pay the winner on Dec 31.
It's from brazil so this is the first time I've heard of it, and no, as far as I know, there is no lottery in my country where they show the already tax deducted winning amount. But to be honest, if you think about it, the lottery you mentioned isn't really different from other lotteries that deduct taxes.

No, I had no idea about the existence of this lottery in Brazil. But it does not surprise me, Brazil is a big country and lately there have been more and more Brazilians getting involved in gambling and betting.

It catches my attention the organizer of this lottery went through the hassle of calculating and deducting the taxed slice of the prize, so people know exactly from the beginning how much money they would receive in the case of winning, this is something more lotteries in countries were gambling earnings are taxed should do; it would save time to gamblers and would help people to adjust their expectations on the amount of money being advertised as the prize.

I haven't heard yet with this lottery kind and if difference from Powerball how to pick the winner of this lottery? for the participants registering this lottery since early years or the Mega da Virada lottery only has several months for user participants? WOW!! No, I hadn't heard about this "Mega da Virada" before, and the prize is crazy! I imagine that there will be only one winner.

In my country we have the Christmas lottery on December 22, which is €400k per winning ticket, (or €320k after taxes), and "El Niño", translated as "The Children"'s lottery, on January 6, with €200k per winning ticket, more or less in the range of other national lotteries that have been mentioned in this thread, but nor a point of comparison with a lottery as massive as the one described in the OP.

Normally, lottery winnings are subjected to tax around 15-30% depending on the country.

Like what some have mentioned, in lottery, the government would give you two (2) options, whether to receive the payment in full (but the amount that you receive is less than the actual amount you won); or you receive the entire amount in staggered payments which is to be paid for more than twenty (20) years depending on the amount.

This is new to me; I can't imagine Brazilians preparing to bet on this lottery, given the amount is mind-blowing. We have a lottery here in our country that's very popular, but we have never reached that amount in our jackpot.

There is nothing like it with me, and the most I could win on the lotto is if I hit the winning combination on the Eurojackpot lotto, which is a maximum of 120 million euros. However, for that you need to hit 5/50 and 2/12, which of course are in separate combinations, and that is quite difficult. The price for one combination is 2 EUR.

No, when the prize is big there are many winners because many people bet. In this case 6 people won and shared the main prize of R$ 1 billion and many shared the smaller prizes when they get 5 correct numbers and 4 correct numbers. The biggest prize was more than R$ 180 million for each of the 6 big winners which is close to $32 millions

If it wasn't for this tax-deduction, the prize could be 30% higher, what means the government is grabbing 30% from total prize through taxes. If the total prize is 182$ million dollars, we are talking about 54.600.000$ in taxes! I would prefer that money to be shared with bettors as well, potentially increasing the number of winners, so the money could reach more lucky gamblers.

Then the question arises: who is making more profit over gamblers? Private casinos or the one which belong to the state? The same state which claims to be protecting their citizens against evil and greedy gambling industry.
