There was a bug in the latest bitcoin core release (v. 30) affecting migration of very old wallets [1][2]. Considering that the bitcoincore.org reverted to v. 29.2 it may be best to update the sticky news on top of the forum to indicate that and maybe add a second one that points to the bug announcement [1] so that more people can see it across the forum to avoid possible losses.

Great update. This should be as visible as possible so everyone here sees it very quickly. Will really be a bummer to lose funds permanently due to no fault of yours and older wallets are more likely to have a good amount of sats in storage.

This sort of important update could even come as a pop up or made as visible as possible.
The update has been pulled even when you click on the link, you are redirected to v 29.2, so those more at risk are people that already have the updates available and they may not be checking out the page top frequently.

How could something as serious slip through the development process?
It happens in programming because generally speaking it is very difficult and almost impossible to always foresee all possible edge cases that are affected by a change in the code. In this case very specific types of wallets were affected, not everything.

P.S. This also highlights the importance of following safety guidelines such as keeping a separate backup of the wallet files, seeds, etc. which can be different depending on the software used.

How could something as serious slip through the development process?

The bug affected older versions, those more than 5 years old. The likelihood of developers performing compatibility tests with such old versions is low, especially since these versions are no longer supported.

I think this goes to show how big of an issue debugging is to programming. Considering how big the bitcoin community is and their developer count I never expected this to happen then again we can't totally avoid human errors. thankfully the admins already added a warning.

One positive thing about open source softwares like this is how fast bugs like these are noticed because if it was closed source a lot of damage would have occurred before it will be noticed or a fix would happen.

I think the core problem why software breaks is..the software these days are too complicated for anyone to memorize...you can change one piece of code that might affect some other parts in ways you never expected.....and don't get me wrong..I'm not saying the programers were careless..no..rather the number of possible combinations is very huge..so you really can't test every part of it..you can think of it as a large network of dominoes...you nudge one and a domino falls into a corner you never knew was connected....but in the wallet case, the bug couldn't crash everything (just some specific types of wallets)....you might experience such because, as we know, you can't test every possible combination because of probably how numerous they are...and bugs survive in these configurations that are rarely used..untill someone somewhere run into them...

That's why backups are always recommended....yes you can't build a perfect software (as it is mathematically impossible) but you can build some safety nets...(Recovery seeds.. backup files and you can store multiple copies separately)

Good engineering was never about making mistakes...but rather..making sure that when mistakes happen (and it will) people won't lose everything...

It says in "Under rare circumstances", so I guess they tested it and worked.
But after realeasing it and being used by thousand people, they found the bug.
