For those who have the money to enable such a trip, that $9 is almost insignificant - it would be different if it were, say, $90. Considering that this money should be spent on health insurance and improving tourism, it is money well spent - because the millions of tourists who come to that country every year must also have a negative impact on that country's environment.

For tourist spending that amount for their travel that $9 is tolerable amount. If the proceeds will directly go to improvements on their tourism sector and health insurance. If lots of tourist will come like millions will come on their country for sure this will have infrastructure and also environmental impact in their country. So asking that small fees is fine especially if it goes back to environment and to make their services more better.

That $90 could really help them a lot, but $9 is for sure sustainable and also fair to visitors or tourist especially this will not add any financial burden to them.

Agreed. Typically a travel cost from my country is around 1000$ for the total package of transfer and accommodation while traveler usually have a pocket money close to the amount their spend on travel package.

Some country even charge a redundant travel fee in the form of environmental fee and other charges on tourist per tourist attraction which the amount is close to 5$.

starting february 2026 thailand a top tourism destination will implement the 300 baht travel fee for all tourists arriving by air, land, or sea. 300 baht is around 9 USD. to me it is not a lot especially that thailand has specified that of 300 baht, 70 baht will cover medical insurance of the tourists and the rest will go to improvements of thailand’s tourism sector

people are reacting and thinking this will cause more problems at immigration or will cause more paperwork

do you think this will affect thailand’s tourism sector? was this a good idea? will other countries follow suit?

source

$9 is not that much for tourists, but your question is, is it good? Yes, at least those who visit there will have insurance, and they will be safer. It will also contribute towards medical expenses in the event of an unexpected accident. It will help improve tourism in their country; it's a win for the government and for tourists, too. There are tourists who have a budget of thousands of dollars every time they visit other countries. What's the point of just $9 for them if they can enjoy themselves and be more secure? I just wish there was an idea like that here in our country so that we could even help local tourist guides.

you are closed to the right figure in USD.
People might not really be reacting to the news as pertaining the suggested immigration protocols, maybe the $9 might probably be an extra budget in the journey.

So economics management can also make them lament. Although might not be too much to be afford as tourist.
In the other side could be a means of the people protesting because the people are not comfortable with how governments just keep adjust taxes anyhow they want which could somehow give a frawning face to the Thailand's tourist destinations.
OP mentioned like people are reacting on this news, it is like more people are affected on it. I think Thailand got cost of living cheaper and maybe the usual cost to travel here is also cheap. So most people who travel here might also be poor. That is why. Still, so, tax is another issue in Thailand apart from this? But we now know on why this had happened. Because they already had a history. This is overkill for the poor.

Tax alone is already intended for the development of a country though and caters other things too. OP, this is a change, so it causes paper work and this change can also affect the tourism sector of Thailand. Definitely a bad idea. If other countries/governments are not selfish, they won't follow suit.

I think this year should be recorded for massive tax rates and charges because almost all the countries around the globe let's say 50% are strictly adhering to a new tax policy of any sort, be it money that comes into your account, being taxed for purchasing an items and all that and here Thailand having a travel fee. Honestly it's becoming too much and people's reactions are proving otherwise that such issues should be looked upon as it'll definitely affect the whole tourism sector.

9 USD is a tiny amount of money. It shouldn't affect Thailand's tourism but psychologically, it just doesn't feel right to pay for visiting a country because you are a tourist and you automatically provide lots of benefits for the country by using their hotel and taxi services, paying money to see museums and so on.
I hope that other countries won't find this idea attractive and won't follow this practice because that will create additional burden for those who travel regularly around the world because of work or for other reasons.

It is exactly like this. The price of everything increases with time. This is an era where inflation is not seen to decrease for a long time. And the cost of travel is very significant in the price of everything. Because when people travel hotel bills food bills and many other things are increasing with time. Therefore people who are afraid of inflation increasing further travel for tourism. But people who get happiness from tourism do not care about inflation because travel gives them mental and emotional peace. In simple word if someone can meet the travel expenses they can travel at any time whether there is inflation or not.

From a tourism perspective, this is definitely a good idea but I don't think other countries will follow this. Thailand has a lot of tourists every year so even if it's just $9 but they'll make a huge profit from it but not all countries have that many tourists so maybe they won't do it. But the best thing for Thailand is if they actually spend all of this money on their travel and medical insurance then their tourism industry will improve a lot and people will be more interested to travel.
