Starlink has been gaining traction in Nigeria, becoming the country's second-largest internet service provider ISP with over 65,000 subscribers as of Q3 2024. Its high-speed, low-latency satellite broadband is particularly attractive in areas where traditional networks like MTN struggle with coverage and reliability issues.

Key Factors
- Speed and Coverage: Starlink offers 100-200 Mbps download speeds, outperforming many local ISPs.

- Remote Accessibility: Ideal for underserved regions where terrestrial networks are unreliable.

- Growing Demand: Strong interest despite premium pricing (starting at ₦38,000/mo).

However, Starlink faces challenges

- Capacity Constraints: Sold out in major cities like Lagos and Abuja due to high demand.

- Regulatory Hurdles: Pricing disputes and licensing issues in some countries.

While Starlink won't entirely replace traditional networks like MTN soon, it's a viable alternative, especially in areas with poor connectivity. MTN and other local providers are responding by upgrading infrastructure fiber rollouts, 5G launches.

Sterlink is an alternative, not a replacement.

When MTN noticed how fast people are buying Sterlink, they started MTN FibreX which is unlimited data plan in a way that you will only buy network speed and it is fast and consume far lesser electricity.

It is neither 4G nor 5G, the router is connected to the mast through the physical fiber optic cables. It is called Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) service.
