What could happen at the very best case for USA would be a place like Saudi Arabia. With all the wars that the US has been funding for over a half a century, should've been pretty obvious that that's what they're after, that's why they continue waging wars on different parts of Middle East, because they have a lot of precious resources that the US desperately needs to keep up with the other superpower nations. What we are seeing is a critical minerals race and the underlying point is that the U.S and some of its allies don't want to go to China or rely on them to function to maximum. While China may be in control of their resources, they have developed machineries to make this mining process of rare minerals easy and they hold loin share as per trade and business relationship with these countries like Iran.

Iran is not a treasure trove of minerals; this is very easy to check and verify. Just take a look at the publicly available analytics:
Iran is rich in minerals, the main ones being oil and natural gas, where the country is a world leader. It also has significant reserves of metals (iron, copper, chromium, lead, zinc), coal, barite, gypsum, as well as non-metallic minerals such as kaolin, bentonite, asbestos, talc, marble, and turquoise. Where are the rare earth metals? They are not there.
The problem that the US will probably be able to solve is to return the Iranian people to the quality of life they enjoyed before the ultra-radicals, religious fanatics, and terrorists came to power. I didn't say it was a successful example, but it doesn't rely entirely on a single resource, namely oil, as in the case of the Gulf states or Venezuela, where we find examples that may seem somewhat successful but are very fragile. Also, don't forget the economic sanctions on Iran, which wouldn't have kept it alive for decades if its economy depended entirely on a single resource. I am not defending the Irani regime but the economic model isn't that bad considering the situation of Iran after the war against saddam during the eighteens.
