I recently watched an interview with a compulsive gambler and for the first time heard that superstition can actually be beneficial in gambling. I'm a skeptic, and I thought that superstitions only have negative effects in gambling, as they give a false sense of control.  So, here's the story: When the gambler from the interview went to the casino for the first time, he really enjoyed it. He told his father about it.
And his father said, "Son, don't gamble in casinos, because we are an unlucky family, and that's why we try to stay away from games of chance."
And this superstition affected him; he thought for a long time about giving up gambling. But in the end, the temptation proved stronger, and... now he's sitting in the interview as the main character – a gambler out of control.

I don't get what his superstition here is, he just did that out of curiosity or for whatever the reason and it gave the positive results. But superstitions are not going to help in winning, still people do that and even I got some but it's obvious at one point we will realize it's just our thing and we do it just with the hope of repeating the wins.

I do believe in this, for example say you wanted to take that home win on your team and while trying to click it lands on the draw then you want to change it later on.. that's a sign that the selection might be a bad one because the second you correct it just know that slip is gone.. it's like you ginx you own selection and when the results come in chance's of this not landing grow 10 fold

I think what his father said was not a superstition, but rather his father's way of warning his son not to gamble. He said it to show that gambling could destroy him, but in different words. Unfortunately, the son did not believe it. But I am sure it was not a superstition story, but a warning or a sign from his father.

If you believe that spirituality actually controls the physical, then you would believe that there a no superstitions in gambling as well as every other activities in this life, there is actually a real spiritual side to gambling which favors some group of persons and does not favor other groups..

I've said it some time in this forum some where on one of the posts on this board that luck comes differently for different people, some people are favored with good luck in anything that involves gambling/game of chance, while there are others who are not favored with good luck in this area, but are favored with good luck in the area of running/managing their own business(s), same applied in all other areas as well..
Not saying this for any to believe me but just saying what I believe, and nothing contrary anybody can tell me about this to change this believe.

It's just mindset. He has placed his mindset on what his father said earlier and now it's affecting his gambling life. Gambling is a game of luck and chances. You will never know what game might be the best or the worst but we just keep playing for the sake of fun. If we have the mindset that somehow looks superstitious it will definitely affect our gambling.. it's just like someone praying or fasting or consulting some kind of spiritual entity that his bet or game should emerge win.. that's definitely not going to work. We try our very best to differentiate gambling from superstition because they are two different things..

I don't know why some people have taken thing so personal that what is meant to be the normal thing has always been changed by them and they try to put force in achieving on some other things, must we gamble by all means or even win by all efforts, what about the fun we should benefits from gambling, where has it been left, could it be possible that everyone of us is winning a bet each time we gamble, then why the rush for nothing.

Compulsive gambling is just an out of control type of gambling addiction and I believe everyone has their own superstition or beliefs having belonged to a group or society or clan or even family.

The bottom line is whatever you believe might work out in your favor and that's what I got to understand from the story, because I doubt the interviewed gambler aims to win but just wants to prove to his late dad that he can gamble all he wants because he loves it and not because he intends to make huge wins from it.

Superstition are like facts that ain't true but they become reality when one actually believes it does happen or are real. Well I don't blame the son for that because it was the opinion of his dad inculcating in him the mindsets that their family are known to be unlucky and so such thoughts has been invested in the son's mind and start manifesting, whereas it's suppose not to have any impact on him but with the fact that he believes and have thought of it happening made it all a reality.

This is not an issue of substitution beliefs or whatever you can call it. This is what has been on gambling for people to be unlucky in it. The father of the boy knows that, he's letting his boy know that early before he thinks otherwise of gambling.

The one thing I find out about human beings is whether that is being said to us whether it is positive or negative, our thoughts reflect on that easily as a reminder each time we encounter it. Take for instance, we think gambling as luck. Our subconscious mind is taking gambling to be so, that's the way it will remain in our minds

It wasn't the superstition/ the father's warning that turned the dude into an addict....What really turned him into an addict was probably the perception that he had when he began gambling.. Probably he started out thinking that gambling is a way to make money or maybe as a way to avoid a particular problem/ challenge. And that perception further made him to be out of control when gambling is concerned.....Lots of folks out there came from places where superstitions like this is rampant, myself included.But yet they haven't turned into reckless gamblers....If a gambler chooses to gamble only for entertainment, I doubt if that person can ever turn into an addict even if the pastor of that person prophecy otherwise...

Your story does not sound logical because someone cannot be a compulsive gambler and still admit that he was helped by superstitious believe, because compulsive gambling is someone that does not have control of his gambling. Superstitious believe can help a player and it is not different from luck and I wonder how far luck can take a player who wants to be profitable in the long run in games like sports betting, unless in casino only.

When i faced an addicted gambler, whatever you said, he's won't care. He's even harming his family, and don't care with what happened to them. Even in some cases there were some news where addicted gamblers kill his family caused by he got no money after he asked his family.

it's really opposite with your story that is telling a compulsive gambler can still hear others opinion. So it makes your story feels unreal cuz i rarely find an addicter gambler who being cooperative even to hear a superstition told by his father.

Other than it, your story is also telling us about how superstition gave no result as the son still gamble. So basically, superstition gave no impact overall.

What a belief.
Anyone can be lucky in their own story while the family has believed a lie for so long.
I can't blame the dad for thinking that they're so unlucky all of the time. It's because that he just wants his son to avoid gambling.
They're making stories so that they'll push anyone away from gambling because that's what they think is the right thing to do.
Until the son discovered that it's just probably a man-made story of his son.

On his story, the sone manage to avoid gambling for a long time due to fear but overcome it later on so it means that give some impact to him or else he already gamble without waiting for many years due to fear.

It delays the gambling addiction problem but it doesn’t fully stop someone to gamble.

I’m assuming that the father that advised the superstition was once a gambler that’s why he gave an early warning while the son was become curious on what gambling feels like.

I don't believe in this, just as I don't believe in horoscopes or luck or these things, because even if you do all these propitiatory rites, sometimes they don't work. On the other hand, I fundamentally believe in karma, that if you behave well, karma repays you in some way and vice versa, if you behave badly, karma punishes you.

Superstition becomes real when you believe in it. Now this gambler is having the mindset that he is unlucky and addicted to gambling because of what his father told him. Instead of taking full responsibility for his actions, he is now blaming superstitious beliefs.

That individual is just an addicted gambler who failed to control himself. If he seeks help and controls his gambling activities, he would be fine. His problem is ignorance and a lack of control.

I don't think what his father told him was wrong neither superstitious. It's true that gambling is a game of chance and only a few gamblers are lucky to hit it big. The gambler dad knows that you will keep on losing overtime as a gambler which was why he wanted to prevent and discourage his son from gambling.

A lot of gamblers have been told that gambling isn't for them because they don't have the luck but they refused because they want to get rich overnight through gambling. Assuming, the gambler listened to his father, and didn't gamble he would not be a compulsive gambler.

Honestly, I also see nothing wrong with someone telling some people that gambling is only for lucky people, and when someone is unlucky, they will hardly win at gambling. I was also told a similar thing when I was little. My brother also told me that gamblers are always broke people.and seriously, despite that, it is not that every gambler is broke. What about those addicted gamblers? They hardly get money in their accounts. All the money they always get, they use it to gamble.

Honestly, that made me avoid gambling when I was little because I didn’t want to be broke when I grew up. As I was growing up and finally met some people, I started seeing that not all gamblers are always broke, but only those who gamble without sense.

But that superstition is not "in gambling" with the rest of the meaning you ascribe to this story. A superstition in gambling would be always avoiding black on the roulette table, but your example is just "never bet". Regardless of that people might have other superstitions but they're as useful as being lucky, they are uncontrollable and most have no verifiable benefit for the person who is following it. I would say it's magic, but that always has a logical explanation to it instead of wishful thinking.

I don't remember see the correlation between superstitions and being "unlucky" because gambling is generally an activity that is based majorly on luck and a bit of analysis to support the win so it should not be coined under the umbrella of being unlucky.

There are people who are dumb I'm reality but have more winnings than a literate in gambling, it's not just about the family's history and all because I don't see how that influenced him, or was it hereditary? If so, you can also say he inherited all the spiritual curses from his ancestors too.

And that fact he became addicted to gambling was not an ancestral curse but rather his desire over objectivity.
