The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, on allegations of “gross misconduct.
These allegations include issues like failure to present the state budget, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds from the legislature, and ignoring court rulings.
A notice of allegations was read in the Assembly and signed by a large number of lawmakers.
The House has **asked the Chief Judge of Rivers State to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate the allegations against the governor and deputy — this is part of the constitutional impeachment process.
Despite calls for political negotiation or reconciliation, lawmakers insist the impeachment process must continue under the constitution.
Some lawmakers who earlier wanted peace talks have reversed their position and rejoined the impeachment push.
Reports indicate the lawmakers have also reunited and regrouped to pursue impeachment as a united action.
A Rivers State High Court has issued an injunction restraining the Speaker, the Assembly, and the Chief Judge from carrying out the impeachment proceedings — effectively temporarily halting the process until further legal determination.
The impeachment move comes amid political tensions between the governor and the State House of Assembly, which has accused him of acting against legislative authority and constitutional provisions.
Critics and civic groups have described the impeachment as a politically driven rather than legally justified process, though this is contested. With all this political conflict going on between the governor and the assembly members it is of clear view that no one is on his side in that house he should definitely watch his back, in this coming election so he can retain his sit.
