2026 Winter Olympics - discussion thread

In 18 days we will be witnessing another great sports event - The 25th Winter Olympic Games. The event will take place in Italy and will be held from 6th to 22nd of February 2026. Those who love to watch opening ceremony dont forget to turn on your TVs February 6. This year 92 countries will compete for medals. UAE are having debut in Winter Olympic Games.

This year we will see new sports, freestyle skiing and moguls, both for men and women. I am so glad that Olympic committee came to agreement with NHL (they will pause their season), and we will have one of greatest games this year (LTU_btc, where are you bro?)

I'm here, mate Finally we will have NHL players at Olypics, for the first time since 2014. It's been a while. It's going to be be iconic hockey tournament. And finally winter Olympics returned to Europe, so, we will able to watche in convenient time, not like when it was in Asia and most of events were in morning time when we were at work.
My favourite sports at Olympics besides hockey is biathlon and bobsleigh as I follow it during whole season. But I will try to watch other events as much as possible. Except figure skating - that's not my cup of tea.

We had Winter and Summer Olympic games topics before, but I think that there is little interest to it on the forum because we are used to discuss separate sport in separate topic. Or have a topic for each league. During following Olympic games there will be 16 disciplines where where 92 countries or thousands athlete take part. During summer games we have more popular individuals. Winter games are famous for team or individual athlete is familiar for a short group of people. By looking on what people are discussing, then there are football, cricket and basketball Rarely we have ice hockey discussion. Anyway, interest to Olympic games is still huge, but disciplines are not the most popular among bitcointalk community.

Ski jumping looks like half sport, half science. Costumes that athletes is wearing have very strict regulations and it often cause contraversies when athlete is disqualified for wearing costume that don't comply with the rules

I wouldn't say so. Wiinter Olympics always been smaller thing than Summer Olympics.

Yes, I watch. It's interesting to see athletes from exotic countries, something like legendary Jamaica bobsleigh team. Unfortunately, despite that my country is from northern region, we haven't won any medals at Winter Olympics. This year we have record deleagtion with 20 athletes, but most of them will be more like tourists.

Yes, I watch. It's interesting to see athletes from exotic countries, something like legendary Jamaica bobsleigh team. Unfortunately, despite that my country is from northern region, we haven't won any medals at Winter Olympics. When I was a kid I often have thought why some countries even participate. Like you have said, most of athletes from you country would be like tourists, so there is no much hope for medal. Then why they participate at all? They participation is an expense for national budget. My thoughts were, if they can never win, why do they participate? Why not give spot quotas to other, much stronger athletes?

Now, when I have made a little research, I understand that if you there, you have chances to win. Because to be invited and take quota spot, during years between last and next games, you must show results worse than settled criteria, and have wins on international competitions. So if your guy is there, then he isnt weak compared to rest.

This Winter Olympics will be more exciting. I am looking forward to it because I will be able to watch Mogul skiing in these Olympic Games. I will leave all my work on February 6 to watch the opening ceremony because that is the best part for me. Watching ice hockey is also my favorite part.

I hope we have a representative at the Winter Olympics this coming Winter. Our country is in the tropical zone, but in 2014, we had one representative, and in 2018, we had two. This shows that even in the tropical zone, a country can still compete if the government supports it.

Who knows, in the coming years, we'll have a great number of tropical countries in the Winter Olympics. It's challenging, but it's not impossible.

Ah, the winter games in Milan, yes. In my opinion it's nice that they do them in so many different places, so one can travel, can see the world, can see the places. If you come to Italy, I recommend you try the Italian food which is really very good and take a tour of some cities, where you will be challenged with games which are really beautiful, in my opinion.

I used to watch almost all winter sports at the Winter Olympics very closely. But in recent years, sport has become too politicized, with constant doping scandals. I’m not even sure if I’ll watch these Olympics at all. One thing I can say for sure is that I’ll watch the hockey tournament, especially now that NHL stars will be taking part. I might also watch biathlon and cross-country skiing.

I'm not looking forward to the Winter Olympics because we've only sent 2 athletes at most in the past, since we are a tropical country, but I love watching Alpine Skiing and Cross-Country Skiing events; the participants are impressive.
I like the event because it's exciting to watch them ski their way to the maze, and the alpine; it takes highly disciplined players to compete in these events.

Not only tv stations but there is less hype in social media as well. Too many things are on our screen real estate so no wonder we are loosing interest in general for everything. Dopamine spikes need to be higher and higher lol.

it’s exciting that this winter olympics has become a little more inclusive
even the debut of uae would be interesting to watch

ski mountaineering would be one of the highlights i reckon and the fact that it’s happening in italy and we would be watching the mountains of itaky would be such a view

Now back to discussion. Figure skating is the sport with lots of fans, however it would be better, if they add description how judges value performed elements. Make a table that shows how much each element is value, that viewers could understand scores better. For instance athlete got 272.71 score points for his performance. I could understand how 272 is calculated; but 0.71 wtf. Why 0.71? How to get 0.72 ? Why not round up ?

Thanks for this update, in my country we hardly hear about winter Olympics and I believe that the reason is because we don't have winter in Africa, but I'm surprised to see OP mention UAE which is a tropical country. I didn't know much of the winter games except for skiing, and the first time I heard and saw bobsleigh, was on a movie about a Jamaican team, but I don't remember the name of that movie but I immediately loved the game. I will put interest in this winter Olympics, hopefully I'll watch some bobsleigh and see updates on other games especially that skiing from mountain tops.
