Featured lot: Heritage Auction, 01/19/26, Gold Cas 1000 Bitcoin sold for $97,600

The Casascius gold Proof Unloaded (Unfunded) "Gold Cas" 1000 Bitcoin (BTC) coin, issued in 2012 and graded PR69 Ultra Cameo by NGC, is struck from one ounce of pure gold. The "Gold Cas" is recognized as the first gold coin in the cryptocurrency sector and as Caldwell's highest-denomination coin. At the time of release, these coins were available for direct purchase from Caldwell, pre-loaded with 1000 BTC for $5,500. Estimates suggest that only 5 to 7 coins were produced with a single private key, while approximately 20 coins, including this example, were issued with 2-Factor Authentication. This NGC Top Pop specimen is currently tied with five others and is widely regarded as a significant tribute to the early history of physical cryptocurrency and numismatic achievement.

Way overpriced. Probably ended up with a bid war between two big pockets.

The last one sold before this was around 27k on November 7, and even then BTC was price was much higher.

Wow. That is a pretty impressive sale. I am legitimately jealous now. Hopefully we are witnessing the beginning of the great Casascius repricing as premiums return to something that owners can be happy with. Very interested in what the next one will sell for after seeing this.

I certainly think this auction had a lot more eyes on it, even if most weren’t bidders.

I noticed the Reddit r/CryptoCollectibles group jumped up from not even being on the Top category list for most popular Crypto related subreddits, to place #7 overnight. And also the weekly views of the sub 200x, from ~1k a week to 201k.

Ten years ago, very few people would have used gold as a physical medium to represent Bitcoin. Yet, gold is the best physical symbol for Bitcoin, and this particular piece, although it doesn't contain any actual Bitcoin, is an extremely rare historical artifact of Bitcoin.
