January 2026 | Gelephu, Kingdom of Bhutan

The Kingdom of Bhutan has officially launched a Digital Nomad Visa Programme, offering foreign professionals the opportunity to obtain long-term residence in one of the world’s most forward-looking and values-driven jurisdictions. The programme is implemented within the framework of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) in partnership with NomadClub, and is supported by the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority.

The initiative is designed to attract digital nomads, entrepreneurs, remote professionals, and innovators whose work aligns with GMC’s vision of sustainable development, mindful living, and future-ready economic systems.

Key Features of the Digital Nomad Visa Programme

• Long-term residence
The programme grants a 12-month residence permit, with the possibility of extension up to 24 months, allowing participants to live and work remotely while being legally resident in Bhutan.

• Flexible eligibility model
Applicants are not required to meet a fixed minimum income threshold. Eligibility is based on professional activity, alignment with programme objectives, and successful compliance screening.

• Nationwide freedom of residence
Visa holders are permitted to reside and travel freely throughout the Kingdom of Bhutan, without restriction to a single city or zone.

• Transparent onboarding process
The application process includes:
 1. Eligibility assessment and onboarding
 2. Payment of an annual programme fee of USD 2,800
 3. Opening a local account with DK Bank and maintaining a minimum balance equivalent to USD 10,000 in TER, a gold-backed digital asset used within the GMC ecosystem
 4. Issuance of the Digital Nomad Visa and residence documentation

Financial and Regulatory Environment

The programme is structured to support international professionals while respecting Bhutan’s regulatory framework. Income generated outside Bhutan is generally treated separately from local economic activity, subject to applicable laws and individual tax circumstances. Participants are advised to seek independent tax and legal advice.
