Dead or abandoned wallets are risky to use , the trivial statement in fact.

So it’s probably time to open the dedicated thread that lists such projects, so everyone can be aware that they should no longer be used.

Relevant projects:

1. Copay
The latest release, v12.12.2, is dated July 28, 2022. Relevant pull requests are also old. These are clear signs that BitPay has stopped maintaining it.

2. Breadwallet
Discontinued after being acquired by Coinbase. Users were advised to migrate to Coinbase Wallet.

3. Bitcoin Wallet (known as the Schildbach Wallet in the community)
UPD. Conditionally dead, since it was removed from Google Play. The latest release available on GitHub is dated March 5, 2025.
4. Jaxx Liberty
Both desktop and mobile versions are effectively dead, as there have been no updates in their repositories.

5. Airbitz. Replaced by Edge.

6. DarkWallet. "as of 2020 it’s not really maintained anymore.", @BitMaxz.

7. Hive Wallet . "the last submitted commit is from the year 2017." @BitMaxz.

8. bitaddress.org. Last updated 10 years ago based on https://github.com/pointbiz/bitaddress.org @ABCbits

9. warpwallet. it's popular alternative of traditional brainwallet that have better security. Last updated 9 years ago based on https://github.com/keybase/warpwallet. @ABCbits

10.mSigna . Outdated and not supported any more. Last release is dated August 14, 2017, which is almost nine years ago. @nc50lc

11. MultiBit HD "Development stopped, and security updates ceased" @nc50lc

12.  https://coinb.in/, Latest release onJul 7, 2020. @ABCbits

To be continued.

Please help me extend/refine this list.

I did some research for dead Bitcoin wallets, and here is my list below that you can add to your list.

~ DarkWallet ~
Wiki page: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/DarkWallet
Opensource: https://github.com/darkwallet/darkwallet
This one seems abandoned and is considered dead because the last commit was 10 years ago. The weird part is someone claimed the domain, but there is no answer from their GitHub page, so be careful; the domain may be bought by the scammer.

~ Hive Wallet ~
Wiki Page: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Hive
OpenSource: https://github.com/hivewallet
This one is dead; the last submitted commit is from the year 2017.

And I think the last one is the Samourai wallet since the founder was arrested in 2024; their GitHub page no longer has any updates then this should be considered dead?

Wow, I’ve never heard these names before.

Regarding DarkWallet, the Bitcoin Wiki states that “as of 2020 it’s not really maintained anymore.”

The outdated commitment seen with Hive Wallet clearly indicates that it also belongs to the category of dead wallets.

Both have been added to the list.

Just DYOR about the related details and dates.

Thanks, will take close look tomorrow.

Consider adding these,
bitaddress.org. Last updated 10 years ago based on https://github.com/pointbiz/bitaddress.org
warpwallet. it's popular alternative of traditional brainwallet that have better security. Last updated 9 years ago based on https://github.com/keybase/warpwallet.

1. BitPay (formerly Copay)
The latest release, v12.12.2, is dated July 28, 2022. Relevant pull requests are also old. These are clear signs that BitPay has stopped maintaining it.

I'm not sure we talk about same "BitPay". But it seems BitPay wallet still updated recently.
https://github.com/bitpay/bitpay-app have v14.40.0 released last week.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitpay.wallet&hl=en-US says it's last updated Jan 24, 2026.

bitaddress.org. Last updated 10 years ago based on

I'm not sure about this one. Bitaddress is still a widely used paper wallet generator. Adding it here might encourage people to use something else that may not be secure. Obviously though one should run it offline, but still.. I don't think it should hit the list.

Sorry, corrected, I actually meant Copay.

Consider adding these,
bitaddress.org. Last updated 10 years ago based on https://github.com/pointbiz/bitaddress.org
warpwallet. it's popular alternative of traditional brainwallet that have better security. Last updated 9 years ago based on

Agreed, formally abandoned in terms of development which in turn may cause security issues. Besides, I consider any kind of brainwallets as potentially unsafe. Added to the list.

Since this list also includes those wallets that have their official "retirement" announcements, not just abandoned wallet.
You may include the old MultiBit Classic/HD and mSigna wallets.
Just DYOR about the related details and dates.

I found that the official mSigna repository shows its last release dated August 14, 2017 i.e. nearly nine years ago. Clearly abandoned.

Regarding MultiBit HD, my research indicates that the wallet was eventually discontinued,  development halted and security updates ended.

Both points have been added to the list.

Already in the list.

This is not a wallet.

I doubt whether such garbage is even worth mentioning here. Probably not.

brainwallet I think domain was http://brainwallet.org

Please, be more precise. I didn't manage to find such 'masterpiece".

My research found only one possible candidate for this which seems to be browser extension in Chrome and removed by Google around 12 years ago.

A lot of such kind of crap was produced over the years, and in my view not all of it needs to be mentioned in this thread.

P.S. Henceforth, posts of such nature like yours which lack proper argumentation will not be taken into consideration, sorry.

Armory is probably abandoned. I couldn't find any relevant information. GreenAddress (by Blockstream) is also abandoned, any site that uses this name is probably a scam. Wasabi Wallet 1.0 should also be avoided.

There are a dozen. Iancoleman is also used as a wallet generator by some people, and it uses Javascript for cryptography, which is bad for a variety of reasons. Another useful guide would be the wallets that are reputable and thoroughly reviewed for many years.

Should the Multibit classic be on the list? It's clearly different (and better in my opinion) from the HD version of Multibit. I believe the HD version (although it has HD, a very important privacy feature) is much more limited than the classic version.

3. Bitcoin Wallet (known as the Schildbach Wallet in the community)
I couldn’t find the relevant page on Google Play. GitHub commits haven’t been updated. It appears to be abandoned.
Regarding the Schildbach Wallet, its last update was on 05/05/2025 according to their github, less than a year ago. I would consider it an abandoned project if it didn't have any updates or commits for two years.
I don't know for what reason it was removed from Google Play Store without any reason or communication from the dev, that's definitely a bad sign. There's no way.

It's still possible to download it on F-Droid.

Coinomi should also be on this list, but thankfully they returned with new updates in mid-2024.

-snip-
There are a dozen. Iancoleman is also used as a wallet generator by some people, and it uses Javascript for cryptography, which is bad for a variety of reasons. Another useful guide would be the wallets that are reputable and thoroughly reviewed for many years.
On X, it's recommended in a scary way, but it's still very useful for restoring private keys if the user needs to handle private keys and xprivs. It's only recommended for testing purposes, and if it's for something serious, it should be use it on an offline pc for recoveries, etc.

Armory is probably abandoned. I couldn't find any relevant information.
Its "goatpig/Armory" GitHub Repository's Dev branch is relatively active, about a few latest commits ranging from weeks to months apart.
It's just the release version that's stuck at v0.96.5 for years.
Last time I heard of the developer is he seem to be busy (on a trip to/from another country, or something)

The old "etotheipi/Armory" is the one that's abandoned which is continued by the current solo developer, goatpig.

The issue is, the latest versions of Bitcoin Core and some distros aren't fully compatible with the current release version.
But it's very slowly reaching the next version's goal: github.com/users/goatpig/projects/1

I’ve already thought about Armory. Formally developer hasn’t abandoned it. He’s still quite active on the forum and continues to support users who are experiencing issues with the stuck 0.96.5 version.

Regarding iancoleman. I prefer to treat it more astool rather than wallet. It might be worth to clarify what wallet  term means within the context of this thread.

Should the Multibit classic be on the list? It's clearly different (and better in my opinion) from the HD version of Multibit. I believe the HD version (although it has HD, a very important privacy feature) is much more limited than the classic version.

But Classic was officially replaced by HD, and my logic says that if HD is dead, then Classic is even more so  continuing digging so far back in time we might eventually end up with Charles Babbage himself.

Regarding the Schildbach Wallet, its last update was on 05/05/2025 according to their github, less than a year ago. I would consider it an abandoned project if it didn't have any updates or commits for two years.

Thanks, I have refined the list.

It's still possible to download it on F-Droid.

It means nothing in the context of this thread.

I doubt whether such garbage is even worth mentioning here. Probably not.

It looks like fork of older version of coinb.in, but was never popular. On related note, https://coinb.in/ itself have better/more wallet feature. But last updated 5 years ago according to https://github.com/OutCast3k/coinbin/.

I never try it, but the wallet feature can show current balance, show address QR code and have spend feature.

Thanks, your post helped me remember this wallet. I’ve added it to the list.

I actually used coinb.in a few times back in 2016-2017, and I have to say it’s not meant for average user, though I do remember it saving me in the tough situations. And I agree,  coinb.in has remained a kind of buzzword even now, so users should know that development stalled in 2020.
