This is just a feeling.

I feel like there should be some penalty/punishment for people who PM others on the forum whereby what they are trying to tell me to do is pure scam.

I am certain that I am not the only person that is receiving PMs that are looking like scam on this forum, apart from ignoring which many people would do, they already show who they are, why can't we make them pay for even try to scam through forums PM?

It is against one of the forum rules:

29. Sending unsolicited PMs, including but not limited to advertising and flood, is not allowed.

Did you report the person? Report the person so that moderators can know what they can do about it.

Any unwanted PMs like spam and scam are unsolicited and you can report them.

There is punishment, but it seems you aren't aware of that. Just report them as an unsolicited message; don't report them as a scam. Though scams aren't moderated on the forum, the forum respects your thoughts regarding receiving unsolicited messages. So once you report it, the message will be visible to admins, and most probably they will take necessary action against the sender. If the sender gets a couple of reports, then most probably they will get a ban, either temporary or permanent.

Learn to report even it does marked bad or unhandled.

Anyone stupid enough to try and scam people here shouldn't be left to themselves, you could just choose to ignore them but that only means that someone else is probably going to get bothered so the best thing to do in a situation like this one is to have them reported and let the admins take care of it.
We can't have the forum swarming with scammers.

Looking like doesn’t make it scam but, you don’t need to confirm such actions before giving them up actually. When the PMs isn’t solicited and it makes you uneasy, definitely ignoring or restricting such users from ever sending you PMs is an option but, when the zeal to safe others kicks in, you ca always well report such users to the moderators or expose the content of the PM when it’s of obvious scam to the public for further discussions and possibly tagging of the user.

@Op, in addition to what others said above (i.e in addition to blocking the user and reporting to moderators), you should also desist from making some investment kind of posts in the public.

Post like, I would want to invest xyz amount in crypto, someone should suggest me the best coins or tokens to buy. If you actively involve in these type of rhreads as a lower member, you'll likely keep recieving such type of unsolicited pms.

That's punishable on the forum as that's against the rules. But it's on a person to either avoid those messages or report those messages so the one who sent such messages might get some punishment for that kind of activity.

If someone sent you a message like that then you should report that to moderators or you might create a thread against that member in reputation board or scam accusation board so others can be safe from such type of scammers and their scams.

All you have to do is report them, one of the admins or global moderators will handle it. There is a Report to Admin button in the lower right portion of the message. Just make sure to include a clear explanation of why you believe it's a scam.

The forum already has its rule on it.

You can limit PMs from newbies.

A: In order to mitigate spam, messages to and from newbies have to be opted in. You can do so here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;sa=pmprefs. If you are a newbie and can't seem to reach a user who's buying / selling goods and / or services, post on his thread about it.

yea i totally agree this is frustrating and many people actually fall for them scams they should be held to account.
ignoring the scams protects you personally but does not protect other from the scam. so reporting the one you think may be a scam is important to others using the platform. while there should be a punishment the forms have to look in to it and follow there own process so reporting it is an important thing for everyone to do when you come across scams not just ignoring it which most people do. basically don't just protect yourself protect all using the forms by reporting.

every platform has there own rules to follow and abide by, but how can these people be punished if no one reports them. yes a lot of people know their scamming and stay away from it but what about the few that dont and actually go through with the scam. we all need to start reporting these people so the forms can investigate and take the appropriate action needed. there is always going to be scammers online but we all need to do our part too in protecting the majority.

OP, you can report such an account holder who sends you unsolicited messages with scam intentions. However, you can set your message on who you recieve message from, more especially restricting newbie accounts from sending you pm because most of those messages are coming from the newbie accounts that are not well established here, and they do it intentionally just to try to see how they can be able to convince a person to fall for their scam.

As others have already mentioned, you can always report them, and they will probably be banned or restricted from sending DMs. I do appreciate that DMs from newbies are marked in red warning so people are mostly aware that those are spam.

@Zoomic made a good point that it's usually a good idea to refrain from posting about things like wanting to invest or having money. Because scammers usually target people whom they think have money. The same is true for Telegram, too. Once you make a rich statement in a public group, you start getting spammed left, right, and center.

The bitcointalk forum itself is pretty balanced, and that's how it's still surviving and perhaps even thriving, despite a gradual decrease in other public forums' activity.

I had seen people got banned because of pms. Mostly managers got ban foe multiple PMs. As it is said all what you have to do is to report the PMs to moderators to take action. But if it one Pm is not bad but if it is multiple PMs l, you can report it.

It's first time I'm hearing that managers got banned because of sending multiple PM's. In most cases, members send PM's to managers but in rare cases managers send PM's to other member. Surely, if a PM is sent by anyone with scam intention or if it include malware links then such PM sender will surely get punished.

The forum rules applied for all forum members and there is no privileges for signature campaign managers at all.

PM spam. (If you send a bulk PM and any recipient reports it, then it is spam.) 30 days

Reason

You sent over 100 PMs with the same format: clear unsolicited bulk PMs. 4 people reported it, making it unwanted & unsolicited bulk PMs = spam. Most others would've been banned much longer.

Another example

I do, as I imagine others do too, send a few messages to services/gambling sites offering my service as a Campaign Manager and asking them if they'd like to give it a go here at the forum.

Some managers have temporary bans by sending PMs like julerz12 and AB de Royse777 as I remembered too but I can not find more details about their ban appeals in the past.
