How a good day could suddenly be so terrifying

So I was surfing the web, going over “X” formally tweeter earlier today and I came across a screaming clip of a 53 year old said to have accidentally deleted his seed phrase and was seen widely screaming on how can he get his deleted seed phrase back!

Now that wasn’t much of my concern but my concern was the comment right here and I quote
Quote
I've laughed at a lot at other people's misfortunes, but this is not one one of them. This is dreadful desperation and doom. A lot of people have lost a lot of money because crypto is just a bad design. It's horrible. I'm never going anywhere near it. At least with a commercial bank I can't lose a code or push the wrong button and lose my entire checking account. Case in point, like this one.
Yeah, you get how I got my subject title. I don’t want to link the tweet so I don’t promote any page and get more views, likes and comments going but, this individual apparently is never coming close to cryptos for this reason, a bad design, like really!

Okay, now this is the case where you find some individual way too deep into centralized systems and don’t want to get their heads out of their because they don’t know how to better take charge of their own security and safety. They always like someone being on the lookout for them.

Now let’s get right back to the situation
1. You install a non custodial wallet on your device, you would be given a seed phrase and is required to write it down, it’s an instruction you receive upon set up and it’s reproduced in the correct order before you could go further.
What went wrong there?
• He didn’t write it down but, could have taken a screenshot or maybe typed (technically that is a written form document right) it on the screen of his device.

2. You are made known this cannot be recovered when misplaced
What went wrong?
• He accidentally deleted it because he had gone the soft copy way with it. If it were to be a hard copy hand written document, of course there would have being no way to loose it so easily.

Still don’t panic and try these things out

What to do
• If it were a screenshot of which, most wallets wouldn’t allow you do and apparently block you from doing but, should you by some means manage it, maybe with a second device, you’ve got to check your device's recycle being. When it’s not there you’ve still got options.
• Deleting a seed phrase doesn’t mean you’ve deleted your wallet right… Technically, you are still logged in on the wallet as all you need is a login password. You can always access your seed phrase if you are still logged in on the wallet, just search out for seeds on the wallet, input your password and it would be shown to you.
• so long as you are still logged in, you can create a new wallet, write down the seeds the right way with a handwritten note and transfer all your coins there.

Then, if you are logged out, had your wallet deleted and misplaced or lost your seed phrase, you’ve still got life and hope. Better to create a new wallet, learn from the flaws of your youth and start building another portfolio by using the DCA strategy. It is hard to take or start anew but, if you are that pro-Bitcoin, I’ll tell you for free that, it isn’t worth harming yourself over it. Life goes on and the world wouldn’t blink for a second without you!

Bitcoin haven’t got a bad design, we are just poor at managing own security!

It's like an unbelievable story as how he had his wallet file and already made his wallet backup then suddenly lost all of these things together. People might not make their wallet backups but this case is different.

Anyway, he made wallet backup but only one, and it's not enough. The advice for wallet backup is always making multiple wallet backups!
How to back up a wallet seed phrase?

With Bitcoin, they can have their own Bitcoin banks.
With banks and bank accounts, they don't own anything.
Thinking like if they are safer at banks or centralized exchanges is a wrong thinking. It's not their keys, it's not their coins, and they are misled by customer support and account recovery from centralized platforms like banks or exchanges.

I feel sorry for the person who lost his seed phrase by mistakenly deleted it, most crypto wallets don't even support taking screenshots of your recovery seed so I am guessing that this person use a second phone to take a picture.

As for the response that the person you quote dropped.

I have come to accept that so many people in the world today are nothing but centralised slaves, such people shouldn't be in this space right from the beginning because they will easily messed themselves up.

They always find it hard to do things on their own, they will always love how the banks makes things easier to deal with, that responsibility of keeping their keys safe by themselves feels like asking them to carry a rock on their heads.

We can't force such people, the victim made the mistake but there are people who will always put the blame on the technology rather than the human errors.

Cryptocurrency is considered a poor design for those who don't understand its fundamentals, especially the importance of securing and backing up their personal wallets. As far as I know, almost all wallet software reminds users to back up their seedphrase or private key, even requiring them to re-enter it for security purposes (as a sign that they have saved it). So, how could he is not be aware of this? We have heard numerous warnings about the importance of properly storing private wallet keys, and various warnings that make people aware of all the possible harm that could happen to their wallets, whether intentional or accidental. Essentially, all of this leads to skepticism, and if everyone had this one, they would be concerned about any potential harm or threat to their wallets.

By the way, if someone accidentally deletes a file on Android/iOS, they should still be able to recover it, as they have a "Recovery for Deleted Files" feature, with a 30-day timeframe. So, I think that is a good solution to address this issue. However, personally, I don't recommend anyone storing sensitive data on devices that are frequently connected to the internet. If possible, try to store it on storage that isn't connected to the internet, and you can use various storage types.

Besides that, if someone accidentally deletes a file on their PC/computer/laptop, they should still be able to recover it, and there are various software programs that can support this. Personally, I often use an application called Recuva, and I have also tried several other supporting software, but Recuva seems simpler, and easier for me to use.

Many people trade freedom for satisfaction. But, well, considering the commentator was warning a 53yo guy, most of whom are simply unable to take care of themselves, it would be a different story if this old man told of his bank failure and his inability to liquidate his savings. He probably wouldn't have had the chance to retract his statement.

Forever, freedom is a right, and there is no compulsion to exercise it.

I wouldn't call it bad design, you could say it's inconvenient, but that's a small price to pay for what is almost maximum security.

I believe most people that don't write their seed phrase down and stick to saving it to notes on PC/phone are just doing it because:
1.It's a burner wallet and will not hold enough funds for them to care
or 2.They willingly choose convenience over security/safety

In both cases it's a user fault at the end and honestly I can not see how Crypto can improve much about that, I mean how do you even compete(safety wise) with Seedphrase/privatekey written on a piece of physical paper?

For those who want to use Bitcoin as an investment, it's better to buy ETFs or invest in cryptocurrency-related stocks like Coinbase, rather than buying Bitcoin and forgetting how to store the wallet seed. Even if flexible recovery methods are developed, it's easier for them to store their Bitcoin with a central entity.

Even if it is not in the recycle bin, he can get a recovery software that works offline, close his windows and turn off internet connection of any kind and use the software to recover deleted files on the PC, after which he would use a different device, create a new wallet and transfer the BTC from the old wallet to the new one since he cannot guarantee that the recovery software doesn't have some file stealing feature

People have to learn to take full responsibility for their own shortcomings. There is nothing wrong with bitcoin and everything wrong with the way he stored his seed phrases.

I feel sorry for the person who lost his seed phrase by mistakenly deleted it, most crypto wallets don't even support taking screenshots of your recovery seed so I am guessing that this person use a second phone to take a picture.
Most wallets mobile version prevents screenshots very well but it is still very possible in their desktop version since people can use window resizing to obtain screenshots even if full screen mode doesn't support it.

One of the first thing to do when you are involved in anything especially one that involves you saving your wealth in that system is to know first of all how you can save your funds and ensure that it does not get to a third party regardless of what happens. saving your seed phrase via screenshot does not even work to start with and the first thing to know about saving of seed phrase is that it is best to be copied offline for safety sake. as long as you have copied it offline, you have reduce the risk of loss to large extent compared to what is the case when you leave it like that without saving it offline.

Of course, there are some investors who are careless with keeping stuffs in their possession, they can buy from ETFs and keep it in with them but that isn't real bitcoin because it cannot be transferred to a noncustodial wallet in future. Which makes it weird and your bitcoin can be freezed if you're a suspect by the government.

I think the best thing is for investors to take their wallet security very personal and do the needful to prevent their wallet from being compromised. Store your bitcoin in your custody and be financially free.

What to do

He should probably live with the reality of his own mistake.
Majority of the wallet these days gives warning, and looking at the age, he's barely that old, so I guess he must have read the warning before continuing with what led to him having his seed phrase on his device. Though the story isn't complete, but it doesn't sound like he did the whole thing on his computer, because deleting what was saved on the computer, and deleting the recycle bin at the same time is another case that clearly proves how careless the person is. Self custody is not a rocket science. Some people are just naturally careless.

If the story says he deleted his seed phrase then obviously it was typed or copied into his device storage and didn't bother writing them down. This story is a sad one but that doesn't make crypto a bad design rather it is shaping the world in taking full responsibility of their assets. Assuming it was his fiat account he misplaced obviously he will match to the bank to retrieve his details but that should be after he has been stressed and have submitted piles of documents.

He just has to face his reality, the fact will always remain the asset is gone forever. This will make him more careful and extremely cautious if he decides to reinvest again.

The crypto is not a safe or comfortable place for careless users who don't care about their Privacies. If you loose guard your seed phrase, you will either expose it to the wrong persons who also values good life that money can afford to steal your fund.
You can also lost access to your wallet when you can not recover your private keys and so on your funds will be lost all out of your carelessness to secure your Privacy.

Commercial banks seems better because you can have your money in cash and you rely your custodial on the authority.
So the question is... What do you really want? If someone to entrust your funds to, then commercial banks are good but when we talk about users custodial, then crypto can also be considered.

Loosing your Bitcoin to scam or otherwise is due to personal carelessness.

His certainly not clueless and in the clip I watched, you can find him visibly screaming and furious at himself for what he has done. He was on his PC certainly and knew that his actions could have cost him everything.
These things happen and it’s such a nightmare for anyone it does happens to.

The first comment however was where I could say is a lot misleading. Tagging the irrecoverable nature of private keys or seed phrases a bad design? What happens to the various ways you can safeguard your keys. Should it matter so much that other people look after these things for you, then that individual should get a safe deposit box and have the bank do the securing for them or perhaps go against popular advice and use exchanges for that purpose.

There are ways, risky ways and that’s the option cryptocurrency gives you, complete liberty to do as you please.

I recently had a similar problem. I was testing out a mobile wallet that had some interesting privacy features. Since it was just a test wallet, I chose the option to create the wallet with a passkey instead of a seed phrase. At some point, the app froze and I tried to log out and log back in to get it to work properly but I accidentally clicked on a button that said “delete wallet”. Unfortunately, the passkey had not been synched to my iCloud account and I lost access to that wallet permanently.

I had not reached a point where I had sent real funds to the wallet, but I can imagine how a newbie could end up in a similar situation and lose money in the process. I don’t even know why a wallet would even give you the option of deleting your keys from within their app. I know you’re supposed to make a backup, but with passkeys, I thought they were immediately backed up to the cloud as soon as they’re created, which doesn’t seem to be the case.

I wouldn't take what people comment on twitter serious if I were you. These days, when I see something stupid on Twitter, I just scroll past it because I cant defreintate the ones that are actually stupid or the ones acting stupid for attention.
Since Twitter started paying for engagement, there have been all kinds of stupid tweets that they call "ragebaiting".
The comment section is obviously a crypto space, so a lot of crypto lovers will be there and saying something that they will disagree with and try to prove wrong is a smart way to get engagement.

This is what I thought immedicatly I read the part of the post where the man said he mistakenly deleted his seed phrase. Knowing Twitter, it might be another one of those tweets for engagement, too.
All the wallets I've used have a feature where you can input your password and view your secret phrase. That is why I always advise people to verify their secret phrase from time to time to make sure they remember where they kept, and make sure it's still there and inaccessible to any other person.

Bitcoin is never a bad design, Bitcoin is a very reliable currency. We always fall victim to such situations or we fall into the trap of hackers. The biggest reason for this is ourselves. It is done for our good but we lean towards it without knowing the right information and without knowing the right use and make mistakes. As a result, we have to face losses.

We always have to take every step with awareness. If we are aware of every step, we will be able to protect ourselves from this mistake

What to do

He should probably live with the reality of his own mistake.
Majority of the wallet these days gives warning, and looking at the age, he's barely that old, so I guess he must have read the warning before continuing with what led to him having his seed phrase on his device.

Since he was on his PC, then it is very much recoverable. I saw an info from a user Emjay24 up the thread which I liked and is more secure and practical and I wouldn't need to repeat it.

Bitcoin security has the most simple and practical application, people are just very careless and most times they know what they should do and the importance of securing your seed phrases offline, but they are just too lazy to do the right thing and only start raising alarm when their carelessness have cost them a fortune.

It is as simple as Backing up your seed phrases offline and try not going online with any device that has your seed phrase imported in it. You can always use an air gapped device for cold storage or with hardware wallet, then use an online version of WOW to both monitor your wallet, create and broadcast transactions while you sign it offline.

you can still make mistakes because of the human factor, but we need to try our best to avoid such a fate, that's true Smiley
