Leather wallet.

I found today wallet  called Leather, which integrates several swap protocols such as Bitflow, Velar, ALEX, and others.

In my view, this wallet ^{which has replaced the former Hiro wallet} may be interesting for anyone looking for the wallet with built‑in DEX functionality.

Leather is a non‑custodial wallet, available both as browser extension and as  mobile app for iOS and Android.

It is fully open‑source ^{variants released under License 1 and License 2}.

Always good to have another open source wallet! but do you happen to know the differences between the DEXes you mentioned and MayaProtocol/Thorchain by any chance? in terms of native/decentralized it is, and supported chains? These are not names that we see very often.

The wallet can not be used to convert other coins to bitcoin and can not be used to convert bitcoin to other coins.

STX which is a shit coin can only be swapped with its tokens on the wallet, nothing else.

It seems to me that you are wrong in your assessment.

BTC can be converted to other coins inside the Leather wallet.

Leather uses Stacks smart contracts to perform swap operations, so STX is required to pay the fees for executing those contracts on the Stacks layer.

I would advise you to educate yourself on what Stacks actually is and what it’s for.

Particularly as one option Leather users may use officially integrated ALEX ^{which is DeFi protocol on the Stacks blockchain} for swaps . So Leather routes relevant swapping transaction through ALEX’s decentralized swap engine.

Did you test this wallet and its swap capability?

I went through the wallet but I saw no way I would be able to if I funded the wallet.

When I clicked on STX and USDCx, you can see swap:
 



Click on bitcoin, you will not see swap:




STX is the main coin and the only coin when I clicked on swap for general access:
 



But you can swap to other coins which I called STX tokens but I may not be correct. I think they are STX tokens and some of them are altcoins pegged to bitcoin price:
 



Wallets like Unstoppable first did not supported swapping to bitcoin, but it supported many chains and their tokens. It was later that it supported swapping to bitcoin as it supported cross chains. But leather only supported STX and no other chains. Although it is not a problem.

The leather wallet is a Web3 wallet that supports NFTs; it wasn't built for Bitcoin but mainly for STX.

Its function is the same as a MetaMask wallet, and the purpose of this wallet is for STX for stacking and earning from yield, and you will get rewarded with BTC in BRC20.

The swapping option is just an extra feature from this app with limited functions.

They do seem to be designed solely as a functional wallet for L2 tokens, not native coins (L1). They heavily promote sBTC and STX throughout the site and have a dedicated page, I assume those are their ecosystem tokens. Supporting BTC is simply intended to absorb liquidity from some BTC holders for their program.

You probably shouldn't expect much from this wallet. In my opinion, 20% is functionality, with the rest being the rewards program.

You probably need to fund it first in order to use its swap function. At least the swap button is visible in the main menu you showed.

They mentioned that the wallet integrates 3^rd party services like Alex to enable swaps.

In the wallet I use for swapping ^(Tangem), the approach is similar. The only difference is that Leather offers decentralized swap services, while Tangem relies on centralized ones.

I see common buttons like “Receive” and “Send” on the main menu, which suggests that this wallet can be used simply to store BTC like the regular wallet does, potentially giving it value due to its open source nature. Could you confirm whether this assumption is correct?

Well, some things may not be obvious at first and we sometimes need to dig deeper to find them. At the very least, they claim that swaps can be done through Alex, and it seems to me that the real issue is simply to find way of accessing ALEX from within the wallet. Still, for most users who just want non custodial, opensource BTC wallet, this isn’t the crucial matter. Personally, it doesn’t matter to me at all, because I use Tangem to swap small amounts ^{usually into USDC} to top up my crypto cards in my daily routine, while keeping my main stash on Passport Core.

Seems like it's only (currently?) possible in their browser extension through "sBTC bridge" (info).
With that, the wallet (browser extension version) has "BTC->sBTC" swap.
e.g.:

Then the user can use the sBTC to swap to another coin supported by their protocol.
But just like you I can't find that option in the App version.

I haven't tested to actually fund it though since I'm not planning to use any of those altcoins.

I think it's cool that there are browser extension option too, it's interesting for small amounts and doing some swaps. But aside from that, I wouldn't use even 30% of what the wallet offers, since I'm a user who only keeps BTC into the wallet and sends it every now and then.

But maybe I'll test it someday, never know.
