It's February 11th 2026 and someone decide to use this much Eth to settle gas ⛽ fee.
Is this a mistake from their end or something else played out?

Is there a lesson or two that we can learn from this? I don't know much about it either so I think it's better if I bring this on here for lesson purposes, someone should please shed lights on this for us all? Thanks

Can you share the full article link? Since etherium shift POW to POS their network fees has reduced significantly. I don't why someone has spent that much fees on etherium and what purpose he choose to spent it.

I do not like current etherium model, don't know how it's still sitting on top altcoin position till now

Just search in twitter/X. I think you will get your desired answer.

I don't know why this much gas was taken. If it was a system error I won't use ETH network from now on.

This is most likely to be a mistake because it is impossible for you to be able to afford this amount as gas fee for ethereum transaction, if the motive of all of us investing in crypto is to make profit, then I don't see any reason why we can afford to lose just like that for any reason and waste our money on the gas fee, we stand to gain nothing and benefit nothing as well from doing this, so it doesn't make sense and I want to believe it's a mistake and not by choice.

There is two possibilities, one is a mistake possibly someone used the ETH as fee instead of entering into the send field.

Or it could be a money laundering attempt, yes it is possible but the chances of doing it right is very minimal so one needs to have the enough resources, so it is more likely a mistake rather than anything else.

The amount is huge, I don't think any ordinary person would want to play around with that fee to make a sensation in the industry. So, the possible reason behind this is all user error. I checked the hash, but couldn't find a single transaction that make such a large fee. The transaction occurred in block 24433988 & Ether.fi got the block reward. Well, if it was a mistake, I hope Ether.fi want to refund the fee.

Just check your gas fee if you're modifying it. I guess that some people did that mistake with the belief that networks are still clogged and fees are quite high.

Otherwise, it's someone just trying to wash his money away which means laundering.

In all aspects of making that mistake of paying that much, I can't think how it's that possible for someone to adjust the gas fee.

This was the transaction https://etherscan.io/tx/0x3663acb66bf2aa2ba7a5cfd47e7c0d605375016a57e91887086c0a113825c09e

You can see that it is very large in size with 54 token swaps, 323 token transfers, and many internal transactions. The address is doing many transactions and it was using a MEV Bot contract. I think it is likely that the transaction could have been made by a market maker.

The overpayment comes from setting the max priority very high to 5814 gwei. This is the tip paid to validators and if they were using a private mempool, they will probably get refunded most of that amount. Also, their trades could have resulted in enough profit to offset the huge fee.

Actually, this is not the first time that an event like that have occurred but it does happen often. Maybe, not many have only been featured here because of their huge number and like I said earlier, they are already common. It does not mean though that it is now a system error but rather it is usually an intentional act. I have read what @FinneysTrueVision have said there and I think it is a pretty good explanation on why such an event can occur.

Now if let say this is just a system error, the Ethereum team will surely fix it right away, judging on the reputation that they already built all throughout the years. So there is no reason for us to worry and be scared of trusting the crypto.

I have seen several people pay heavily transaction fees on bitcoin transactions which was done purposely for record sake. But this is the first time, I have seen someone paying this huge for gas fee on Ethereum. However, if it's a mistake, he will be refunded and if it isn't, the guy is too rich and wants to throw some money away.

Now if let say this is just a system error, the Ethereum team will surely fix it right away, judging on the reputation that they already built all throughout the years. So there is no reason for us to worry and be scared of trusting the crypto.
I don't think it's a system error if not, the guy would have been complaining and showing his frustration on Ethereum for such loss due to system error.

It’s not uncommon for that address to pay large fees, like this transaction made some hours ago, which paid more than 1 ETH.
https://etherscan.io/tx/0x05e13acc7bb49ac81722ec1eb90b2204edcf300d3161f05987d6385a21c3ed8c

Their analytics says they’ve spent over $20,000,000 in fees cumulatively.

It seems they are happy to pay these amounts because they know their bot is going to profit more from front running and arbitraging price differences on DEXs.

What are the reasons? Because I'm curious and wouldn't want to be a victim to this succulent scam. How are we able to convince ourselves and spend tjis huge figures as gas fees? The person that anticipate in this task not know how to read? Because it definitely going to be indicated before one can complete transactions in Crypto. Nothing change, or we should start to point accusing fingers to the crypto exchange this transaction was exerted? Probably a glitch in cryptocurrency? Too many questions to ask but let's just end it with proper research. Precisely, one ought to be extremely careful in other not to fall into scamming hands.

I have seen those transactions that have paid so much fee but later on, they've realized it's a mistake and for the pool that has mined that fee. They've returned it. But I don't know for this case if it's going to be the same, if it's done on a purpose, it could be that there's something behind it that they'll never disclose to the public. And to avoid this honest mistake, never do it where you've got that much of Ethereum, always check the balance you have and the fee you're about to pay. It's not going to take much of your time in doing all of those due diligence.

Or it could be a money laundering attempt, yes it is possible but the chances of doing it right is very minimal so one needs to have the enough resources, so it is more likely a mistake rather than anything else.
Money laundering through fees that you are not sure you will be lucky to mine the block? That suggestion is more than funny unless you are telling us that we have reached a time someone will know for sure that he will mine a certain block and get the reward.

This is just a mistake or one of those rich guys that doesn't know what to do with money, instead decide to give it away. We have seen people sending coins to burner addresses in the past, this could be one of those things.

This is just a mistake or one of those rich guys that doesn't know what to do with money, instead decide to give it away. We have seen people sending coins to burner addresses in the past, this could be one of those things.

Theoritically it is possible, but practically very minimal. That is why it is more of a speculation from my side because we never know what are the extremes people will go for certain things and money laundering is one of it. Or it could be a wallet glitch if they used automated codes to execute the transfer.

Funny too, who doesn't know what to do with money anymore. Even the wealthy are still doing what will give them more money, using such amount for fee comes to mind as a mistake and nothing else. Following the OP on words in the title, it is a very stupid mistake and a reminder for us to check very well before doing any transaction.
