When it comes to wallets most times I've come to discover it resides mostly around personal preference. We know the endless talk about open source and closed source wallets but if you ratio Thier usages, most times closed source often outweighs that of the open source coupled with the fact we barely have them around.

That aside, what are you looking for in a wallet when you choose one and are those the reasons you are making use of your current wallet? If you use multi coin wallets what is you final settlement? And please add the wallet name

Good point. Wallet choice really does come down to personal preference, but that preference is usually shaped by use cases not ideology.
For me, when choosing a wallet, a few things matter more than whether it’s open or closed source

Layers of security should always come first.

However, the reason why I use the wallet I'm using is because of Replace-By-Fee (RBF). It all started in December 2023, I think, when fees were high due to congestion. RBF-supported wallet, where the only solution to adjust fees is if you are not making use of Bitcoin transaction accelerators and you dont want to pay high fees. Most people here can remember vividly when congestion was a problem.

I make use of Electrum for bitcoin. Sometimes I make use of Sparrow but not as often as Electrum. I also make use of Bluewallet. But among the three, I make use of Electrum mostly. I recently make use of Cake wallet.

For multicoin wallet, I makes us of Unstoppable and Cake wallet. But surprisingly, I have only been using Cake just for bitcoin only. I hope both wallet will let people be making use of less than 1 sat/vbyte for transactions.

I do not have close source wallets.

They can be common because people are ignorant of a lot of things. I know about open and close source wallets when I joined this forum. Probably I would not have known about it if I am not on this forum.

All the exchanges are having close source wallets. Like the Bitget wallet that was very common 2 year ago. Or Trustwallet that CZ bought as open source wallet few years ago but turned to close source after he bought it. I thought Binance was even the owner, he used that to market it but it was this year that I knew he is the owner. These people only needed money than anything as they do not want anyone to copy their wallet source code.

Electrum from when I first researched Bitcoin wallets was recommended as best wallet so I agreed it's best even when I joined the forum it's all same recommendations, so I use it for holding Bitcoin only best it's the best bitcoin wallet, open source and I guess it covers more loop holes what most wallets doesn't cover.

Every other features are yet to be used because the need has not arose I believe when it's time I will definitely do.

For me, the choice of a wallet will ultimately come down to your personal preference as well as the level of trust you have in that wallet. I've used several open source wallets in the past; I truly appreciate the transparency as well as the control it gives me, however, I generally choose to use more popular closed source wallets like Exodus and Coinomi simply because they are generally easier to use, user friendly, are widely supported by more people, and are less complicated to operate than open source wallets-especially when using multiple coins, although security is important, I generally lean toward wallets that are easier to use and reliability often tip the scale for me.

When I choose a wallet, I am generally looking for a balance of security, accessibility and the number of coins that the wallet supports, and whether or not the wallet supports the coins I am currently using. I generally prefer multi coin wallets, however, I usually end up consolidating all of my coins into one or two wallets that I consider to be trustworthy, to reduce the amount of risk I take when making final settlements on those coins, a wallet is not just about storing coins, it's also about having peace of mind, control and practicality.

First and foremost, it has to be easy to use features with little or no bugs. I used TrustWallet for a while, and i can tell for sure, it is one of the worst wallets to consider, aside from the fact that it is now centralized by Binance, which is a closed source.

One of the major problem i had with TrustWallet, was my deposits were not confirmed in the wallet (slow to reflect), even after confirming in the blockchain, unless the private keys were imported into a different wallet like BlueWallet, got fed up and barely use it for any immediate transaction.

I make use of Electrum now, since then, everything has been smooth. Electrum has this feature of not being able to edit your wallet address after pasting, i really love that feature, I'm unbothered about making mistakes when pasting my address.

My is coinomi wallet. I have been making use of coinomi wallet for a while now, and here are the  things I like about the wallet.
It supports many coins, over 1700 cryptocurrencies, you can store your Bitcoin, and a ton of altcoins in coinomi wallet.

In coinomi wallet you control your private keys, not the app, which makes it more secure than custodia wallets.

In coinomi wallet no personal information is required, and it doesn't tack your activity.

In coinomi wallet, you can swap your coins without using an external exchange.

Coinomi wallet offer seed phrase backup, encryption, and optional passcode for extra safety, I know this one is common in other wallets.

Lastly the coinomi wallet is continuously updated, making it to stay compatible with new coins and blockchain changes. And you can also adjust fees  to your test in coinomi wallet.

We all want flexibility at the same time security for our funds. Thats why it's better to use good wallet.

Wallets that won't compromise the safe of your funds while offering flexibility or some important features you prefer.

For me I use blue wallet for bitcoins and unstoppable for multi-coins they may not be the best or most standard but I've been using them for a long time and no issues...

I've seen electrum, but I prefer a much simpler interface like bluewallet offers. Unstoppable for me works fine to saving different coins.

I prefer open source wallet and I think everyone knows the simple reason to that.

I also hate it that I should be having it rigourous with using any bitcoin wallet, hence I have always stick with electrum wallet due to their simple to navigate features that even a newbie can work with easily for the first time.

For Bitcoin: I make use of BlueWallet, Electruem and now BULL Wallet, we all know about the first two wallet that was mentioned, it’s because of security and easy to use, I also prefer BlueWallet over Electruem because it’s iOS compatible not like electrum which I can only make use of with my android unless I’m using desktop, as for Bull Wallet I just needed to try something new after I saw it being brought to the forum on the technical board.

Altcoins: Trust wallet and metamask have been very easy to use for me it gives me all the things I need to do in just one wallet, but I don’t trust “Trust wallet” even as that I still have few altcoins and shitcoins stored in there.

When it comes to a wallet for storing Bitcoin, everyone knows the big brother which is obviously Electrum Smiley.. Personally, I just want a wallet that can possibly sign my transactions offline whenever I need to. I can use other wallets, but I guess the ease of navigation using the Electrum GUI made me like it and of course it supports all features i need.

For watch-only, I prefer BlueWallet due to its feature of hiding a wallet using “ Plausible Deniability” (anyone interested can look that up, there’s a way to make it visible as it’s not by default).. Other hot Bitcoin wallets I use are Cake, Electrum again,Core (but not sync for months) and obviously CEXs.

I have a multicoin wallet as well.. The only things I’m really interested in are open source and some in-app features like swaps. Unstoppable has me covered for that.

-snip-
Coinomi has been existing for years now, a decade+. I have been well aware of it and tried to use it back then but I rather stick with open source wallets and that is why the last time I had to use a non-custodial to Hodl some altcoins I used Unstoppable wallet but there were sometimes syncing errors/delay and they have limited altcoins but overall still good for me especially since getting to their customer support is easy and fast, and also the fact that the coin I wanted to hold are being offered.

I think they might have improved because I seriously use it was like a year+ or so.

When it comes to bitcoin, I will continue to stick with bitcoin only wallets offering better features and control on your coin, like the use of RBF (Replace-By-Fee) which is not available in Coinomi. I prefer to use Electrum and Bluewallet.

For multicoin wallet, I makes us of Unstoppable and Cake wallet. But surprisingly, I have only been using Cake just for bitcoin only. I hope both wallet will let people be making use of less than 1 sat/vbyte for transactions.
I will give Cake wallet a try soon and see if I prefer it ahead of Unstoppable wallet in regarding multi coin holding.

...I prefer BlueWallet due to its feature of hiding a wallet using “ Plausible Deniability” (anyone interested can look that up, there’s a way to make it visible as it’s not by default).
I do love the simplicity in using the Plausible Deniability feature in Bluewallet.
To be honest, Bluewallet is like the simplest bitcoin only wallet for users, giving advance features with simplicity.

I make use of Electrum for bitcoin ever since I started my bitcoin journey because it's the best bitcoin wallet to be used in storing your bitcoin assets which has made it easier for me not to be scared of my accumulated bitcoin .

It is an open source and highly advanced in securing your assets and has a good security features that makes it good for managing your bitcoin safely on desktop, best in security.

Electrum wallet gives you the self custody of full ownership, because they provide the user  the with private keys which gives you the real sense of ownership not to be scared of any unforseen situation and backup all your seed phrase.

I used to use Trust Wallet for years but after learning about the security concerns there I switched to Cake Wallet and Electrum Wallet. The important thing is to prioritize security and ease of use.

I choose security first, lightweight and easy to use UI. Electrum answers it all and since I started using it, I've not had any real reason to change wallets. Maybe I'll try out other wallets that I'm seeing here for experience sake with Bitcoin.
I've tried cake wallet few times when I had bigger USDT at my disposal and it was cool. I stopped using Trust wallet after reading  bad reviews about it and since it isn't fully open source.

That aside, what are you looking for in a wallet when you choose one and are those the reasons you are making use of your current wallet?

I like Open-Source, lightweight wallets with advance features and that’s why I use Electrum. I also use BlueWallet on my mobile because I use IOS and Electrum mobile isn’t compatible with IOS, and BlueWallet is also open source and I like the Mobile app interface.

If you use multi coin wallets what is you final settlement? And please add the wallet name

Well, I don’t actually make use of multi-coin wallet often, I use them to receive funds and I don’t store or Hodl any altcoin, so for multi-coin wallet I use MetaMask and Phantom wallet…both are open source, sometime in the past I used trust wallet also but mainly for receiving airdrop tokens.

I prefer using mobile wallet for receiving or sending altcoins.

I actually started with Trust wallet and I'm still using it till date and I have not had any issues with it so far, though I also started using Electrum a few months back and i haven't had any problems with it either, it does offer a level of security and safety that Trust doesn't necessarily offer but if for any reason I have do deal with a non bitcoin then Electrum effectively becomes useless at that point so Trust end up having the upper hand there.
I believe it's a matter of preference and what you actually need the wallet for in the first place rather than how open or closed source it is so Electrum might offer more security but in the long run Trust offers more diversity.

Since I started hearing about Bitcoin some years back my mentor (the guy that coached me about everything concerning BTC and the forum) has always been singing praise on how good and reliable electrum wallet is and I should give it a thought when ever am on any active signature campaign, however for some times now have been making use of it and it's so amazing how you can easily navigate round and have everything in your control. Electrum wallet is on the best advantage in terms of security and privacy, very efficient and fast in terms of your transactions process and it also have a very low transactions fees unlike others, possibly their are so many other advantages that I would be able mention.

However, I wouldn't be thinking of trying other wallet now or even in the nearest future because I have got all I really needed in electrum, If you're not using electrum you can check it out perhaps you might be missing out.

I look for three major things when choosing a wallet, they are: 1) Simplicity and convenience 2) Security features 3) Control( Not your keyz Not your Coin)..... And Trust wallet happens to have them all..... When I first entered into the crypto space and I wanted to store some coin that I bought, all I did was to Navigate my way down to play store and I did download the app, and I started using it right away without been taught by anyone,  this just shows you how simple it is to use... I have heard so much rumours from folks alike who keep condemning the the security level of the app, but so far till date I haven't experienced any loss of funds coz of how top-notch the security feature is...And as we all know Trust wallet application is one out of the very few that gives you total control, it gives you full custody of your seedphrase, making it very impossible for any external intervention.....TRUST WALLET APP. is just the very best.
