Employers want to be impressed by asking you one thing: sell me this pen.

How do we sell a pen?

1. Purpose.
What’s the purpose of the pen? Will it be useful for you? When or where can you use it? Do you really need it? Can you pass down this pen for your kids to use?

2. Prestige or Status
Who are the users of this pen? Are they esteemed people? Highly regarded people? Will you also be considered as one of them if you buy this pen?

3. Premium Quality
Does the price reflect the actual quality of the product? It serves the basic purpose but what are the additives? How does it differ from others?

Now replace pen with any other product and it’s still pretty much the same. How will you market a pen?

They ask that question because in the art of marketing the product is not as important as the person selling it, you might not need a pen but someone who has the skill can make you actually buy that pen and that is what they are trying to get when they ask you to sell them the pen, they want to see how well you understand value creation, persuasion, and positioning it is very less about the pen itself and more about how you identify a need and communicate benefits and then close the conversation. Ultimately, they’re testing your ability to influence decisions and turn an ordinary object into something desirable.

How will you market a pen?
It's not that difficult for a good salesman. You don't sell a product, in this case a pen to a customer without understanding their needs, ultimate goal, challenges they have had with similar product, etc. Hell, you don't want to market a product to someone who does not have any need of it and wouldn't be needing it in the near future.

That said, it is at that point that you ask certain questions before going on to market. For a pen you could ask, how long have you been in the market for one? How much of your time is lost before you get a pen that suits your need? Etc. What these questions do is to enable you understand your potential customer and market your product to meet their needs. That's the right way to market.

You have to understand that people will think you want to take advantage of them buy trying to sell pen to them, a salesperson understand that you have to sell a value the buyer believes that they are winning by purchasing it.
You can't sell a pen to a blind person so regardless of your ability to sell a product the target audience has to align with your product.
The art of marketing is deep and a salesperson understand that they need to constantly match their possible buyer.

It is not really about the pen itself when it comes to marketing a pen, it goes down to the ultimate user of the pen. The basic and simple question would be!! What do you need the pen for, rather than talking about the design or ink. I could just highlight some very important moments and situations that require the use of a pen is and how having a pen in those moments makes things smoother and better!! such as signing a cheque, signing a marriage certificate or signing a contract

A combination of those has to become your unique selling point if you have a generic product, but often the well known brands have honed that reputation over many decades, however it is equally possible to lose that reputation rather quickly if your brand drops in quality chasing short term products. Ultimately your distinguishing factor could also be pricing but still providing a lower limit on the quality of the product. The layed down procedures for the marketing strategy that you put is quite encouraging, however the job of a marketer is not really as easy as you outline it, ordinary one of the most difficult job to do is the job of a marketer, it may look easy on the surface level. As a marketer your employer will place you on a target basis, they will set a target that is so tasking that you will begin to feel pressured. So theoretically putting down the marketing strategy is a good step, but trust me the execution has not always been easy for those marketers especially those of them that go to the field to convince customers as to why they need those products. But the major aspect of marketing that I will always encourage business owners to adopt is Patience, because with patience you can easily convince the minds of customers on a gradual process before your product will go round for general acceptability.

The best way you can market something is by knowing your product well, determine its usefulness and benefits, know who your target customers are, and know their expectations from your product. If you know all of these, you will absolutely sell your product because the customers have seen your sincerity and honesty to them.

However, not everyone is capable to sell, that's the hardest part there. Not everyone is convincing and genuine how they market to others. And not everyone has the power to talk to the people with high knowledge and confidence that everyone may listened will never have to say NO but will easily bite the offer.

The purpose of marketing is to make sales, and sometimes to make sales you simply just need to identify the category of persons you can easily sell to because they actually need the product you're selling to them and it is affordable to them. If you are able to identify this set of persons, it means you would have done half of the job required for you to market your product because while marketing your products to these persons, you already have their attention and will not need to do a lot of work trying to convince them, as they already need the product themselves.

For the pen, I simply need to look for people who need pens and actually use pens enough that they need more than one.

Marketing is the main difference between a bad product and a premium one, the difference between one product having to stay on the shelf while the other is being shipped off for deliveries. Marketing has being a driving force for a growing economy and list of products. That’s why, we see in today that people have built a career out of the act, constantly trying to market not just the product but themselves. They make you see the need while they are needed or relevant in a constantly evolving industry and how your product could survive in a highly competitive market because it’s not all about the product, it’s the value you give it and the reasons you are able to allow the prospective customer to see why, even when they have a pen, they would still like go get another.

Employers want to be impressed by asking you one thing: sell me this pen.

How do we sell a pen?

1. Purpose.
What’s the purpose of the pen? Will it be useful for you? When or where can you use it? Do you really need it? Can you pass down this pen for your kids to use?

2. Prestige or Status
Who are the users of this pen? Are they esteemed people? Highly regarded people? Will you also be considered as one of them if you buy this pen?

3. Premium Quality
Does the price reflect the actual quality of the product? It serves the basic purpose but what are the additives? How does it differ from others?

Now replace pen with any other product and it’s still pretty much the same. How will you market a pen?
My dream was to be a marketing specialist but sadly, in my country, marketing specialists aren't paid well, so I was forced to go into UI/UX design because this profession pays significantly more than marketing.
To my mind, marketing is a very powerful thing. With proper marketing, you can increase the value of the product and significantly increase sales. Have you noticed how many companies have been using buzzwords like Blockchain and AI in every sentence to make their product appear innovative and interesting for the customer?

Btw no one has ever asked me how to sell a pen or a bottle of water during job interviews. Is this still a common question?

Do products matters when taking marketing into more consideration? Any product.
The art of marketing which doesn't need to be destructive but with less noise is a smart campaigning.
No, product doesn't matter, as what has been shown by the OP, you can sell everything, as long as you know how to like capturing the imagination of your potential buyer by using words that can be attract them and how they can used it.

I hate marketing that looks like they are forcing the buyers to buy any products, team behind the product be looking successful when things aren't going as you may think, how it's been presented gives me joy and stand to be successful.
It's not marketing if you it looks like someone is forcing it. It should be smooth talking and the next thing you know, you are like being under their spell and wanted to buy and test the product for yourself. And if you see it fit your lifestyle, the you are trap by this marketing strategy.

You should just focus on the usefulness of that product be it the pen or any other product, that is essentially what most employers wants to hear.. A product with high use value will attract a lot of potential customers..This is a competitive world and definitely there will be other similar products to yours in the market, but what will makes yours stand out will be how useful and beneficial it is to the customers... Quality doesn't really matter here, as a lots of folks out there opt for product with inferior quality probably due to financial reasons, but yet they still end up enjoying that product because of useful the product was to satisfy their want.. My opinion though.

The same thing as you sell a pen. You can explains the things you mentions to the potential buyer. You needs to attract their attention from your explanation about the product while you can interact with them and not just talking about the product.

Knowing the product and what are your potential buyer needs will helps you to sell the product. You know what your buyer wants so you can suggests the right product to them.

That's the common sales/marketing question that has been from the wolf of wall street. And speaking of Jordan Belfort, he's said bad things about Bitcoin. Going with the sales pitch, the best thing to say is really about the use of it.

Now replace pen with any other product and it’s still pretty much the same. How will you market a pen?
It still differs per product but marketing a pen, I won't sell it in places where it's not needed. The purpose is important so, I'd go to the place where most people use it and that's the first thing that I have to do. Just like any business product, it needs to be sold in an area where the demand is high.
