Going by all that you mentioned, a pen may not particularly fit sometimes but other products can fit so well. I personally would not want to ask someone to sell a pen to me because it is becoming almost a cliche used by too many employers and now people know almost the best answer to give at everytime. The art of marketing has got some much to it beyond just selling to some one who has no need of that which you are selling to them, there are people who are so strong willed you just can take them off their stance, such person will need that you do even more work to get them or leave them alone, that's where emotional intelligence comes in as a marketer, there are many others too that can and will be considered  too.

The characteristic of a skilled salesperson is to understand the customer's needs and present the product description according to the need. Due to the excellent description of skilled salespeople, we sometimes end up buying unnecessary things. A company wants to see more sales of its products, as a salesperson, you need to have skills to increase sales. More than doing all the talking, just let your product speak for you because that is the real marketing that you have got there. with an high rate of competition in the business space that is as a result of the large population of people that are in similar line of business, you just have to ensure that your marketing skill is as good as possible and that your product is speaking for you.

social media has made marketing easier now than ever such that even if your product is not all that good, you can easily send a narrative that suggest that it is of a certain quality and by that way, you get to reach a high audience and at the same time, make an higher sales.

Yes, that's right, friend, the most important thing is not what goods you sell but how you sell them, everyone has needs and you only need to predict that person to see the opportunity for the goods to be sold to him or not because this is an art in marketing, you will see the psychological side of the buyer and also accompanied by desires so that they can think that they need the goods you sell, that is the first choice in trading, the second is you must have a positive aura and also an attractive figure so that people want you to serve them, that's why many brands hire talents or ambassadors for their products.

How do we sell a pen?

1. Purpose.
What’s the purpose of the pen? Will it be useful for you? When or where can you use it? Do you really need it? Can you pass down this pen for your kids to use?

2. Prestige or Status
Who are the users of this pen? Are they esteemed people? Highly regarded people? Will you also be considered as one of them if you buy this pen?

3. Premium Quality
Does the price reflect the actual quality of the product? It serves the basic purpose but what are the additives? How does it differ from others?

From what I used to know when I worked in marketing, there is no art behind it. All you do is collect data, follow the trends the data shows you and try to see what else sticks. If you find something better then you adopt it into your marketing strategy and keep going until you have reached the KPI's you have and then you just keep working from there and try to do better, all while analyzing the data.

In the end, no matter how good your marketing is, you will not make any money from your product/service unless there is a demand for that product/service. You might make less money than the guy with a good product and almost no marketing.

You have a point here, i mean when people look at marketers they just be like you should be able to sell anything i give, but then I would argue just like you that the value of the product to the end user is very important. It would just make it a lot better for the marketing team if the product solves an actual problem and that is a major discussion we need to have more often. Marketing can amplify value but it cannot manufacture it where it doesn’t exist and also the easier it is to communicate real impact of the product, the stronger and more sustainable the results will be.

I agree with Coyster. When you are selling to a prospect, you want to first understand their pain points and then communicate how your product is going to make their lives/business better.

I'm no expert with marketing, and if I get asked these kind of questions during interview, I honestly don’t know how to impress them. But marketing is indeed one of the main factor needed to prioritize in order to make sales and profit. Regardless of what product or service you offer, you’ll earn enough profit if you know how to market what you offer. As a consumer, marketing really plays a big role on how you can convince people to buy your product. I’ve seen how people market their products either online or in person, and it really amazes me at some people who have such great marketing skills.

That social identity part never made sense to me. To be fair, I am not someone who really owns many things, I do not really buy things because they are valuable or anything like that. I have my clothes because I have to wear them, I have my home because I wanted to own a home, I have a car because I go places, and I buy food because I eat them, I also have a PC because I work with it.

For those reasons buying stuff makes sense, but for example when I buy a phone, I do not buy the latest iPhone, if anyone wants to that's fine, but I just get whatever cheapest that works for me.
