Is there a thread that already exists with some demographic information about this forum and its users? I couldn’t find one using the search. For example, where the users are located geographically and in what country the forum is operated from (which country receives payments for taxes from revenue for example)?

I also see the forum ip leads one to believe the forum is considered based in New York. Is that where the servers are located?

I guess what I’m wanting to know is if this is forum is considered to be an American website operated in the United States or not.

BitcoinTalk is behind Cloudflare's proxy, so you are probably looking at the IP of one of their servers. theymos has said he follows USA laws, though.

For users, don't expect this data to be available since people value their privacy. You could only guess by looking on which local boards some users post (and even then, that's usually just what language they speak).

No, I don't remember reading any such threads that publicly state where the forum is hosted from.

But it is pretty much obvious where it is operated from when tax agencies started to seize the bitcoin mixers and also forum enforced restrictions on mixers to avoid legal complications.

Just connecting the dots. Smiley

The English boards have, by far, the most activity, and have since the forum's creation. Some of this is driven by the US's economic might, and influence over the rest of the world, but I think a lot of it is due to Americans being the primary user's of the forum.

Theymos used to live in the US. I am not sure if he still does -- there are not many countries with more privacy protections, or free speech protections than the US, so I think he probably hasn't moved. He is the one who owns and is responsible for the forum. So it is reasonable to say the forum is based in the US.

Also, the privacy page says the forum is subject to US jurisdiction, which is another argument in favor of saying it is based in the US.

AFAIK, not tied directly to a specific country's tax jurisdiction.

Ahh looking at the traffic or IP address, it may seem like an American site but it is a global community hub.

The domain is hosted independently and the forum admins run it.

Thank you for posting the privacy link. I hadn’t ever viewed that before. I think it provides the answer I was searching for.

“Bitcointalk.org is in US jurisdiction“

That makes it pretty clear what jurisdiction Bitcointalk.org is in.

All hands must be pointing at the United States I guess but can't be specific what State is the dot specifically pointing at.  Cool. Muchly, they've also been the jurisdiction grabbing the forfeited bitcoins.
If their policies could decide for the forum such that lies the fate of Mixer in the forum, then it's conviceable that they're the major tax collectors of the forum.
There're also related activities in the forum that other local communities like the UK also taxes.
