Ordinarily,  a person who announces his intentions earlier is supposed to enjoy the first mover advantage. He would get more popularity, more exposure, could get support earlier and can sell his ideologies earlier before anyone comes up with something else. But one thing that tends to make early declaration of interests disadvantageous is that the opposition are usually strategic. They would wait to study your strategies and then use the minor errors to criticise, attack and sabotage your entire effort.

This actions by the opposition will usually come when the first person who declared his interest is relaxed thinking he has gotten the people, or when he must have been exhausted from all the campaigns and must have also ran out of ideas and more strategies. It becomes worse if he has run out of funds to run his campaign to the end. Some electorates are blinded by the amount of money the candidate has to offer them. They will switch easily to the next person if he has more financial potentials.

Godfatherism is another problem in some countries. It doesn't matter who came first, once they approve of you, you are getting it.
