The ones where tourists usually go aren’t the ones that people who would want to migrate even consider. The usual tourists destinations of the country are often too romanticized or glamorized that it doesn’t show the reality of living it.

This is a question that has no definite answer because the score depends on the criterion. For example, you say New York is not as good as it seems. But there are millions of people in the world who would love to move to this city, even if they had to live on the street there. The same can be said about other cities. For example, Moscow is a city with many infrastructure problems, not to mention expensive housing. However, the entire population of Russia and the countries of Central Asia is striving to move there (however, the latter are willing to live anywhere in Russia, just to get citizenship). So it is correct to compare cities only by some selective criteria, and not as a whole: the best or the worst.

In real sense, people will try to make it a personal something but there are actually generalization in cases like this. It is not actually a news how those that appears to be best or are taken to be best are not actually what it seems to be. The influx of people to a particular region is usually associated with that region being the best that serves what they craved for but on a general ground it remains personal as per what the drive is because there are loopholes these craved for region is lacking which makes it not necessarily the best.

I totally agree with the OP, the well known places are only attracted to people mostly because of opportunities they think they can get from there.

You means without home? I will prefer to just stay where I am under a roof than to leave in the street without having a home to stay.

If I find comfort and sustainable growth, living in the place I am, I won’t bother myself to want to explore more into a place that I’m not certain of my struggle there, where my chances of making it there is not as strong as to others I’ll be competing with. The one fact about life is that, we will continue to want to grow bigger even if we are already doing okay, but there’s a limit to what I would have achieved and not want to be in competition anymore. Going to big cities like NY is quite attractive, but to settle down there for no reason and just to be in competition with others, it won’t be my thing. I would prefer to live a softer life in place people are not most attracted to and I get all the comfortability I would have ever wished for available there.

Look everything depends on some criteria, in this you have commented about the city of New York it is not quite suitable for you but almost every person is ready to move to New York city because of changing their lifestyle. So I want to say a person tries to improve his suitable employment and place to live, because people like to go to better places for his suitable employment. So of course cities are popular and comfortable although there may be some problems but it is a place for living and employment of a large number of people.

It depend how much you can spend to live in. For example in New York City you must spend very much only for food and beverage, in New Dehli you can live with very few money but the city it's horrible and incredibly dirty full of waste everywhere.
Personally I love Los Angeles and the south of american California (from Orange County to la Yolla), I was here 1/2 times a year, now I go 1 every two years, but the situation become embarassing 'cause of drugs and latinos; but the view it's incredible, some place are untached by this horrible people.

The best is the area of Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo, near ocean and near mountains. Good climate.

New Zealand too is an amazing place, clean, without pollution and with type of animals you never see in other place.

Australia it's very good and not much expensive but you have strange animals who want kill you every minute.

Italy is a piece of heart. Russia or deep Russia it's like a time machine.

What you consider best city to live in depends on what you are looking for and vary from person to person. For instance, if your plan is to look for job, then you will have to consider some cities in Canada where the take home is high than most places in the UK and the US. Australia, Sweden and New Zealand are also great places for someone looking for job. But for someone that already have money but looking for a place to spend it, the US, the UAE, Bahamas, Cairo, Rabat, Paris and some Caribbean countries are very nice destinations.

I think that this really depends on our preference in a city if we like the kind of living there or not. And that judgement will base on your lifestyle and how you view the lifestyle there. Some cities could be good for me but it will be as terrible as it can be based on your experience there. But we shouldn't ignore the fact that if it becomes so good for the other people, let's just recognize it and appreciate that there's the beauty that they are happy in that city and why they fell for it. It's a different story per person for each city that we come in.

The city you don't see as best may the best to another person, the ideal city to live in. We like things differently so it is very possible to have a tourist location as an ideal place to relocate to. This is why I do not agree with the OP.

If I can afford to live in a tourist location regardless of the high cost , why not? It could just also present a good opportunity for business.

That's why most people will say, fantasy is always far from reality, a community full of real people will always attract real people. Hardly have I seen people say they want to relocate to Dubai, they mostly just say they want to go for shopping in Dubai or they want to go and spend the holidays over there. But considering how beautiful that place is, and how anxious people are to visit there, the narrative would have been about relocating to stay there permanently. I haven't been to New York before, I cannot confirm about the social community there, but i know New York has some kind of community set up that you would have to blend in if you know some people, at least those that will show you around.

If New York you have used for example is not one of the best cities in the world then I wait to see you lost those best cities for me. You do not compulsorily have to live in the best cities to live the good life. You can live in a another good location that is within your economic means, and you will still can visit those best cities for pleasure and return to your resident location.

New York that you have used for an explicit clarification to your post is quite expensive cause it has been overridden by explosive population, for this, it is rational that house rent must be high which every habitant will not always be able to afford.

It is left for each people to live according to their means, you do not expect a highly advanced city to have same living standards with growing cities and towns.

When there's high influx of people in a particular geographical location it's just normal that it will lead to high cost of living and generally, those that are not financially strong might find it really deficult to live in such an environment.

You can't expect a city to be housed and visited mainly by the well to do people and that at the same time the cost of living will be moderate. Certain cities are for a certain class of people and that's the reason why if you're not comfortable with a city, you can go find another that's okay for you to reside.

Can you give some examples of what you think the best cities are then? As it is not an accident that people gravitate to places like New York or London, in fact these cities are better run than many others around the same country because they are often better organized, plus get more funding from central government. People are attracted to them because of higher salaries, better facilities and higher wages - for people living there daily they're not interested in what tourists want.

Two different things though,

a. tourist spot city
b. cities that you want to live in because it is said that they are good

So obviously a tourist spot city as you have put it is romanticized, like having a good beach. But the mode of living is different there as it is not aptly for so called foreigners or tourist. As compare to cities like in Europe wherein it's very different wherein it's quiet, crime is down, few people living, simply life and yet there are good paying jobs there.

It all depends on your abilities. In fact, the cities considered the best in the world often do not reflect the reality of everyday life there. You may see the advantages of popular tourist destinations, but they are often romanticized and don't show the other side of life in that city. New York is a beautiful city, it is natural that it is able to attract many tourists, but behind the splendor of the city lies another side that is very contrary to what people think, such as homelessness, traffic jams, and high living costs. In fact, this kind of situation does not only occur in New York, in other cities there is also a hidden side that is the same as London, Paris and Tokyo.

In my opinion, the best cities are those that have strong communities, are affordable to live in, and offer good job opportunities. We can still find cities that offer a high quality of life and a relatively low cost of living in other countries such as Spain and Portugal.

Okay  from my view because the city is being talk about or it has places where tourists visit that don't mean it's a good place to stay, it will be good to visit and have good place to take pictures at the end of the day living in such place will be another story sometimes those kind of places don't have conducive place to stay or let me say the cost of living is very high so it's not for everyone.

So I will say that don't judge a country because it's famous and have beautiful places rather the places that are not well known are the place where life is better and you can stay without any stress

I'm sure I'm not one of those millions. New York does have tremendous opportunities that allow people to move up the ladder faster than other cities. But if people migrate without facing the high risks (in other words, simply to become homeless), their hometown is far better.

For a city like New York, yes, to some extent. But sometimes, I think the key is comfort and long-term safety. It's not too crowded, not too expensive, but still offers opportunities, meaning you're not just coming to take selfies and the cost of living is still reasonable, and the opportunities to earn extra income are still easy and not too risky.

Actually, I mean the best city where people can live in happiness and comfort where the quality of life is high, where all the people living there are able to easily fulfill their basic needs.
For me, the best city is not where money is abundant, people live luxurious lives but in reality there is no happiness in them. And is a place of immense beauty also not the best for me if the life of the people there is poor. New York is never the best city for me, New York is only the most expensive city for me. You will find out that most of the people living there are not actually happy. They may have a lot of wealth but they are plagued by various problems.
