Old members can still be vulnerable anyways, the interesting part is op was still able to recover the wallet at the end. It would have been embarrassing though for a member with the level of experience acquired do far from the forum losing an account due to seedphrase recovery. This topic of having our seed phrases stored in multiple locations have been discussed too often that even a newbie should know what to do if they follow the threads discussed in the forum seriously. I sm glad the user didn't learn the hard way else it wouldn't have been a good story at all.

I have made huge mistake loosing my seedphrase before even when i was an expert in this, i stored my seedphrase in my device notebook, then my device started hanging so i had to get some space by freeing up the catche in my notebook settings. Everything got wiped out including the seedphrase, thats how i lost my money.

That got me a good lesson to learn till today, i always store my seedphrase in a piece of paper and that had helped me a lot.

I'm not sure which is worse, that the OP was using what seemed to be an unstable iPhone device to store his funds, him not saving the seed phrase, or both? Mobile phones are vulnerable, and I don't mean it by security risks or them being stolen (because from my understanding, you weren't actively using your phone), but they can stop working for a variety of reasons, and it doesn't necessarily have to be your fault (breaking their screen etc.).

@retreat, you're not a newbie, but sometimes even more experienced members don't pay attention to what matters most, our funds security. We never consider the possibility of something going wrong, like in your case where the wallet simply wouldn't function. At the end of the day, you managed to restore your wallet and you're left with a valuable lesson, ensuring that you'll never make that mistake again.

We all know that the security you give to your seed phrases is what will make your seed phrases to be well safe for long use, I have heard from some bitcoiners who don't believe that there are some good wallets to hold bitcoin for more than five years, and I will like to refer some people to try electrum wallet for long term holding because the wallet is reliable for long term holding of bitcoin than other wallet in the Internet, well I don't know how some people use to cope with their wallets seed phrases without no backup, which is a big risk I will not accommodate in using wallet to hold my bitcoin.

I have three backups. The first one are paper backups kept in two different places, but they are inside the same house. I wish I can have another location that is different from my house for another backup but I do not have any, this make me to have a third backup which is my memory. If anything happen to the house and nothing happened to me, I will set up new two paper backup again. I neither rely on my memory.

This is what I do where every time I create a bitcoin/EVM wallet, the seed will be written on paper and stored in a safe, now I have a safe to store items that have value including paper with the seed phrase written on it.

Because negligence can happen at any time without them realizing at the beginning, therefore I always record it so that it is stored safely, regarding the location now I am only in 1 house to store the seed phrase and I think it is safe, although many people suggest storing in different locations, meaning different houses.

You seem to have misunderstood the initial discussion. The problem lies not with the wallet (BlueWallet) but with its users who caused the panic. In response to this issue, a well-stored backup seed phrase can be a lifesaver or solution to the panic that occurred.

BlueWallet is a good software wallet, and Electrum isn't a bad wallet either. What's bad is the users' negligence in securing their keys, because every Bitcoin owner is ultimately responsible for their own security.
If you don't own the keys, you don't own the coins.

I mean we already see a lot of stories where they have a huge amount amount of Bitcoin or crypto in a wallet and suddenly they lose the seed phrase or private key just because they didn't back it up, I personally made this kind of mistakes because we just have so many wallets these days, when it comes to crypto projects there are a lot of networks and wallets that you could use, it all have private key or seed phrase that you need to save, I wasn't only saving it on my computer but I manually saving it on my notebook as a backup so I save a softcopy and a hardcopy just in case I encounter some issue I still have a backup on my notebook. But the thing is, I was kinda lazy that time since I needed to put it in my notebook manually, so I just went to make it later, but then I already forgot about it as time pass then never backed it up, until I needed to actually use the wallet.

I think most of the time we are just too lazy to do the backup thing, when we need to save the private key I usually do click save file or just screenshot it because it is easy, but I just it is just about convenient, if we dont know how we are going to handle it for long term we are the one that is going to suffer in it, and we might end up it the investors who lost a huge amount of Bitcoin because they forgot the password or lose there key.

So I tried checking tutorials on YouTube and asking chatGPT, but none of them worked. Already stressed, I took the risk of uninstalling the app and letting my assets disappear. But my friend said that if you delete the app, some data might still be left behind. There was hope, I thought. So I tried reinstalling the BlueWallet app, and thank God, my wallet was still accessible, and I immediately backed up the seed phrase.

Also, I don’t use the wallet in question but, I use Electrum wallet and the many times I’ve had to uninstall and reinstall the wallet on the same device, it doesn’t store any details and always requires me to create a new wallet or import my wallet using normal procedures.

While being able to have access to your wallet this way might prove to be advantageous to you, it could also offer some disadvantages when you are trying to get it out of the way for security reasons and it was previously discovered.

Nothing beats having to write down your seed phrase and store away in a secured location.

This time you got saved but it's necessary to backup seed phrase and keep it at multiple areas, like one backup at your offline computer that will never get connected to internet and the most secure option to write it down on paper and save it in a place that no one can access other than you. It's not a wise choice to rely on applications as sometimes they do crash and sometimes they stop working but if we lose access to our seed phrase then we lose it forever.

It's really important to have more than one backup. You are indeed lucky that you have been saved by the data left behind by the app. Most apps are like that where the data is still left on your device even if you uninstall the app unless you did clear the phone so it will no longer be saved. Well, I don't know why you didn't make a backup of your wallet when you should have made a long time ago already after creating the wallet. That's what I do when creating a wallet because I lost some tokens before worth $2000.

We do need to back up our passphrases as a precaution, but how we store them is also important. Many people fail to understand how to store passphrases and end up having problems when they need them. This has been a recurring discussion in forums about how to store passphrases and many people have probably already suggested steps for storing them.

If you care about assets, you should study some of the methods shared by others and there you can make adjustments to how to store your passphrase securely. If you care about your investments, you should also start caring about your passphrase because it would be a shame if you lost access to your wallet due to a lost passphrase, preventing you from recovering it if needed.

@retreat, this seems a little weird to me. Exactly which iphone you were using? While I understand app crashes are a very normal thing, but the way you described it, and the extent you had to go, in order to recover your seeds, almost feels as if you were infected with some malwares/viruses. I have never used an iphone before, but on Android, old or new, I have rarely seen any types of crashes. It normally happens when there is a compatibility issue, or like mod apps, or like infections, or low storage. I had/have also been testing bluewallet, but never faced similar situations like yours.

Since everything is done online wherein people create no certainty if their account get hacked in the future and steal everything what's inside their wallet, then its best that as early as today find a good strategy to back up your seed phrase, otherwise losses will be possible anytime.

And for me, using an offline method that cannot be hacked would be the best thing, and put in a piece of paper or engraved onto steel and store in a location where its fire proof and water proof to assure its safety 24/7.
