As reported by businessday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector General of Police, replacing Kayo de Egbetokun.
Egbetokun resignation was accepted, with official reasons citing family considerations.
However, reports suggest policy disagreement, particularly regarding the push for state police, contributed to the change.
The security situation in Taraba State was also cited as a factor.

From the content of this news, is obvious the former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun was not pleased with the idea of bringing in state police by the president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, making him to tender this resignation letter and not just because of family considerations as he claims.

What is your take on this?

Truth be told no president will want to work with someone especially when they are beginning to have policy disagreements, the position of the IG is such that cannot be compromised, any wise president will want to ensure that whoever occupies that position is completely intelligent and loyal to him. The immediate past IG has done well and has been very loyal to Tinubu that is why Tinubu has kept him ever since despite that his retirement was long overdue.

Secondly why Tinubu has made this move at this time is so that the new IG will understand the system and be well prepared come 2027, Tinubu and the APC doesn’t want to take any chances, if it was possible to even use his direct family members to occupy those crucial offices he would have, the issue about our leaders is that they are not interested in good governance, they just ensure they man over their loyalists to power so that their loyalist can cover there reuse. Congratulations though to the newly appointed IG i do hope that there will drastic improvement in security across the nation within his tenure in office.

The decision by the president to drop the inspector general of police for me is very unnecessary, he would have just allowed the man to stay till the next election circle, since that was his initial plan. Now a new IGP has been appointed just 2 months to his retirement, this appointment has made 29 members of the Nigerian police force that are senior in rank to the current IGP to go into compulsory retirement. The reason the former IGP gave as to why he's resigning is really surprising to me, so he had family issues that could affect his career all this while and yet he kept on acting as the IGP of the police, which is to say he could not solve the immediate problem of his family but wanted to solve the security issue of the entire country.

Nigerian politicians with their ways of doing things which are oftentimes interesting to me. Why does the president have to appoint someone whom their retirement is just in less than 50 days when there are other competent hands in the system. It is like this administration is working in the same trajectory like the last administration of Muhammad BUHARI where retirements were ignored and tenures extended for selected office holders who are at the interest of the president especially those police officers and paramilitary forces looked like they are taking a new dimension with them. They don’t get to appoint you until your retirement is very close by, after appointing them they will now spend beyond their retirement also kicking out others who are yet to retire but are above them in ranks. I don’t know why the system is like this but it does not make any sense to me.

Our Nigerian government always tells us what they want us to hear meanwhile they have their ulterior motives, thanks to social media we now get insights to the real reasons why things happen in the country. Telling us that the former IG of police voluntarily retired due to family or personal matters is laughable, as a matter of fact the choice have been given to him to resign or be sacked, we know how these things work. I doubt that any public office holders in Nigeria, will voluntarily resign for whatever reasons, it's not in their character.

What I believe is that president Tinubu, wants to do some clean up in the top hierarchy of the force for whatever reasons because the appointment of a new IGP means that his senior officers have to be retired so that the new IG will be the true head of the force. It is also questionable that he should apoint an officer who is already seeing his retirement, I guess he appointed him for specific reasons, whatever it is I hope that the new IG will put Nigerian interest first.
