Eric Halem, former LAPD officer has been convicted over a $5 wrench attack after stealing $350000 in cryptocurrency from a 17-year old boy during a home invasion in 2024. He was charged in December 2024 with kidnapping for ransom, first-degree residential robbery and home invasion robbery. He restrained the victim and his girlfriend, telling the guy that he is going to shoot him if he did not give him his bitcoin key that he can used to access the teenager's bitcoin.

Halem’s co-defendants have yet to stand trial and maintain their innocence.

Do you know the funny thing? The person he attacked said he obtained his crypto through fraud.

I was going to ask how he knew he had that much in crypto but reading the kid stole it, he was probably on the police watch list and the criminal ex cop still had friends who gave him such information.

News like this also makes one wonder it reporting your crypto holdings to the authority (in any capacity) equally puts you at risk of being a victim of an attack means to take your funds.

Do you know the funny thing? The person he attacked said he obtained his crypto through fraud.

Things like this are always the aftermath of what has been acquired illegally, you can imagine at that age getting up to such an amount by early site activities, don't wonder today how young generations are most actively involved in scam-related activities, because they have the sharp brain to manipulate. Instead of using it for something better, they wanted to make quick money and become rich all of a sudden without much effort or time.

Quote
According to a press release published by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the charges carry a life sentence in state prison.
Now that is a stern deterrent, we'd see if Eric Halem gets the life sentence or not. Even if he is not sent to prison for life, i am pretty sure he would be away for a very long time.
Things like this are always the aftermath of what has been acquired illegally, you can imagine at that age getting up to such an amount by early site activities,
What exactly do you mean, a $5 wrench attack can happen to anyone irrespective of how you acquired those coins. There is no justification for the victims actions of fraud, but he is not the one on trial right now, but Eric Halem, who iMO should be sent away for a very long time for kidnapping for ransom.

Things like this are always the aftermath of what has been acquired illegally,
This is a case of a crime between a former officer and a young man who are vastly different in life experience and physical abilities. The robber only needed information that you possessed a large amount of bitcoin, and that was all.

You may be somewhat correct; this started as a fraud investigation that led to a new crime after information was leaked. But this is a very rare coincidence.

Do you know the funny thing? The person he attacked said he obtained his crypto through fraud.
What's funnier is that it seems like Halem's made it so easy to track them to the point that his own lawyer called him and his accomplices "knuckleheads" for using cars from his own car rental company, which have GPS trackers in them.

I was going to ask how he knew he had that much in crypto but reading the kid stole it, he was probably on the police watch list and the criminal ex cop still had friends who gave him such information.
To be honest, I thought they were somehow connected to each other, and the ex-police officer is trying to double cross the kid, but what you said is what most probably happened.

I see that you, OP, always highlight this type of attack, in which the victim is kidnapped and physically assaulted. This makes anyone involved in this field cautious and not disclose their investments publicly, as it is clear that this police officer had prior knowledge of this boy's wealth and was able, by using his position, to gather information about him and devise a plan to rob him and break into his house.

What I see is that, if it is proven that this boy is also accused of obtaining this huge amount of assets in an illegal way, he should be held accountable alongside this officer. What the officer did was exploit his position to commit theft, so in my opinion, there is no difference between him and the boy.
