I have a friend whom I advise so many times to talk to a physician who is an expert in curing addiction, but he says that he can't because he doesn't trust doctors, because he feels that they are prolonging the session so they can extract money from their clients.

He ended up going to a priest to confess his addiction in a confession room and at the same time ask for advice, he reasons that he can easily trust the Priest because they don't charge a fee, you are anonymous to them because there is a curtain to both of you, and Priest are men of God and they study to give good advice.
How about you? Where are you comfortable telling your gambling addiction, and what are your reasons to trust them?

Why would you need to tell your secrets to someone that won't hold you accountable? You're not afraid to have the fun or live the life, but scared to face the consequences? Sounds like people might be cowards.

You should be able to tell your significant other anything and figure out how to deal with it is what I was always told. Trust in your partner.

You have to go to the right place when you're addicted and not to confessions because an addict doesn't listen to advice. Your friend should go and see an expert to help him out of addiction because priest ain't trained to cure one from gambling addiction but to give good advice and help you grow spiritually. Confession doesn't mean that the problem is solved if you cannot make up your mind to stop gambling.

Not being addicted to gambling, I never asked anyone for serious advice except to talk about the possibility of positive advice from friends who are also fellow gamblers but not addicted gamblers.

Maybe someone said that asking for advice from fellow gamblers is the same lie because there is no way out, thinking that fellow gamblers can get addicted without you knowing.

The class to the doctor is one of the best to tell this because he is indeed an expert in this field, even though there are several sessions and there is a fee again, I don't think there will be one advice to make you not addicted, so it takes several times of advice so that you don't get addicted again.

Personally, if I'm addicted to gambling, I will prefer to share my story in a public online space where my real identity is not known and seek advice from those who will come across my story. Only if that doesn't work can I go with a professional therapist who is experienced with helping addicted gamblers.

I would relate with my friend who have overcome his addiction struggles earlier and learn practical steps he employed to curtail his excessive gambling.
I would not go to a doctor since I do not believe gambling addiction has anything to do with a medical state, it is purely your emotional and psychological over attraction and over indulgence in the casino which can be curtailed with behavioral modification and systematic or total withdrawal from the casino.
I may do with a therapist if I have the time and finances. I can.t go to a priest since he may have no experience with gambling addiction and his advices are possibly baseless theories and head knowledge which may still prove ineffective.

Gambling addiction withdrawal has to start from within, and you need to trust yourself first and if you see that you can't withdraw from your addiction then you can consult a doctor since they are specialists in mental health issues, and could prescribe drugs that can help you to cure your addiction even though it will come with fees.

I will be very free to discuss anything with my partner, and for sure I can trust her not to let my secret out if there is any at all.

I don't see such a big deal, trusting people who can help my condition has to do with close partners that I am already used to over time.

Two heads are better than one, the best people you can first tell about your gambling addiction are you family and your best friend. I mean your parents, wife or siblings or best friend.

But professionally, you need to tell your doctor about it so that he can refer you to a rehabilitation center. Rehabilitation can help a lot. This is what I chose in the poll.

I have not been addicted to gambling and I have grown in the business pass where I will be addicted to gambling. But assuming I were addicted, I will feel more comfortable telling my friends about it, they are people that will understand me better and will be able to help me overcome it. Doctors don't cure addictions, let no one deceive you bro, you cure your addiction by yourself starting from the moment you see reasons to make a decision to stop gambling excessively and you've someone to hold you accountable for such a decision which is why I would have my best friend beside me to help me through it all.

Medicine aren't much effective to cure addictions, it is an emotional condition whereby you have less control over your desires, so you should by repeated practices, learn the act of controlling yourself when you have the urge to gamble excessively or better still employ principles that would guide you against excessive gambling like having a strict budget, e.t.c.

Who I open up to about my gambling addiction depend entirely on who I trust or feel comfortable talking to. It does not matter whose title or who he is. For some a teacher or priest may be the best option as that environment seemssafe and secure to them. Other may feel more comfortable opening up to a therapist, support group or trusted family member. As for me I will find someone who will not only listen to me but also help me to accept the truth and change me

Again, I also find it very helpful to get professional help. There are many modern treatment that are very helpful in getting rid of gambling addiction. At the end of the day it is really lucky to have someone by your side whom you really trust and who will support you to get out of this toxic cycle

Gambling addiction will not escalate if we disclose immediately our problem to the person we use to talk frequently so that we can get support and comfort to fight it.

Do you mind reading the discussion and the poll instead of quoting my preference? I did not even mention that I am addicted to gambling. I have given my preference because it is what I think is more effective than the others, based on what I read and from people I know.
If I say that I am addicted and this is what I did, then your opinion applies. We are asked where we are comfortable telling our gambling addiction, and not what we should do to avoid addiction.

Firstly, does this priest have knowledge about addiction? I am aware that some of these priests are knowledgeable in philosophy and theology. Professionals who assists gambling addiction are grounded in human psychology. If your friend really needs help, he would seek the advice of those who are skillful and not seeking counsel based on religious sentiment. You can confess your sins to a priest if you are religious but seek help from the right people. The religious leaders will refer you to the Holy Book and will not offer practical help.

I mean the explanation make atleast some sense to me, doctor for sure if your to give you good advice and might be able to help you at some point, and the priest or pastor might be able to give you some advice as well, atleast I think our pastor do some good job on advice not to be some kind of godly but the bible is actually going to make you something if you are going to follow most of what is written there. I remember my pastor advice on some gamblers in our church. It was something about being an addict that was deep, and it was something that you couldn't do it by yourself; what they needed to do is to surrender it to God, something like that. I mean sound like good advice to me, depending on what people beliefs.

I'll probably be more comfortable sharing or telling it to my wife since mostly my wife is going to be my best friend and we are one, so if someone is going to understand me, it is surely my spouse. The priest and doctor is also for me a great idea, I think if you tell the three it is going to be a much better approach, why tell one if you can tell the three of them, might be a different advice, but it is for sure all valid options. Curing your addiction is for some going to be a different story for some, but that is where I think is im going to be more comfortable telling it if I'm a gambling addict.

There are no prescribed drugs to cure gambling addiction, but what doctors are prescribing are drugs for anxiety and depression that are associated with gambling addiction, because some traits of addiction are insomnia caused by depression resulting from losses. I think I should have added small details about the subject, but I prefer not to because of the many replies already that could change the discussion.

Incomplete story, the result after that your friend met with the priest would had summarized so that others can look into it if it'd be a better means to fight addiction.
But from the look of things, that your friend don't seem serious to end his addiction. How does mean that contacting a therapy will take some times? If he really meant to stop his addiction with that same interest he should have helped himself all by his state of taking control of his emotions. Confessing to a priest don't have the influence to quit your addiction within a twinkle of the eye. Addiction is won through fights of challenges your  desperate urge. It takes some process too.
