If we are to be fair, I think both are important when viewed from two sides. First, there is the religious support from the pastor, complemented by the doctor's advice for mental healing. However, a gambling addict feels cheated when paying for consultation fees, even though he has already wasted a lot of money on gambling that he never wins. That is a mental gambling problem that is difficult to save.  
The point is that he doesn't really want to heal himself and doesn't want to be blamed for his gambling decisions. Without a personal desire for recovery, any method will feel futile.

I once went to confession in church. I confessed my sins, but noticed the priest wasn't listening very carefully. This is understandable, in principle... Priests hear confessions from countless people. They don't psychologically experience all these other people's stories. It is believed that it is God who forgives a person's sins. At first, I would want to draw your attention that I am not a gambling addicts and even if I must talked to person about their habits on gambling addiction it wouldn't be that bad giving them advise as friend to them.
I gambles moderately and limits myself from getting addicted to gambling, and this connotes that I must gamble above my plans, above my income and also I won't gamble above the money maps out for gambling that week or month so that it wouldn't leads me to desperacy or having a higher urges to continue gambling due how irresponsible I could be, all these also could attributes to what you intake such as drinking or smoking which could easily triggers the higher desire to gambling whereby even if you are getting addicted to gambling you wouldn't take much records until you get satisfied what you are doing before you could stop or limits yourself from gambling. It is a very good decision to get rid of gambling addiction and get treatment under the supervision of a psychologist. However, if a person keeps himself busy with some work, he will be able to get out of this addiction much faster. When we are alone and when we are alone, many bad thoughts come to our mind and we become more focused on the thing we are addicted to. So if a person does not sit in his free time after completing his work, he keeps himself busy with some kind of work or game, then it will be very useful for them.

The imam of the mosque tells me the way to get rid of the bad addiction called gambling and he gives me hundreds of advices to stay away from all the bad addictions and advises me to pray five times a day. My school teacher always wants my well-being that is why he advises me to stay away from bad habits like alcohol and cigarettes. Addiction of any kind means you have a problem with self control and take things to excess. You can share it with anyone really, but it's hard to get understanding and unless you're talking to friends/family then you might not get any real sympathy. Confessions don't really fix anything but I guess they act as some kind of relief, as the saying goes a problem shared is a problem halved. If you really feel that sad about your state of mind, it's only solving the root cause that is going to make you feel better. I don't think any skilled professional would call themselves an expert at curing addiction because it has such a varying rate of success and entirely depends on the mindset of the person attending.

Everyone has their beliefs system. Someone that believed on God would not like to visit other people on things like this. But as for me, it is not whom you tell but who can cure the anxiety in gambling which led the gambling addiction. If any of the above can cure the addiction, I tell them but not my fellow gamblers. But it is good to tell the priest and received counseling before going to the physician. Because the physician must administer drugs for me to kill the anxiety.

If I am to choose, I would be much more comfortable when I am speaking with a physician or licensed counselor on addiction. Gambling addiction is a behavioral health problem, and professionals have been trained to had understanding of the psychological patterns within it and provide treatment that has been proven.

Haven said that, a priest or spiritual leader may equally help, mostly for support emotionally, guidance, and accountability. A lot of people believe in them as a result of their confidentiality and spiritual counsel.

On the ideal side, both can work hand in hand: a counselor would be for practical treatment then a priest for spiritual encouragement. Addiction usually affects the mind and personal worths, therefore support coming from different angles can be useful. The key is selecting someon who is trustworthy and one who is honest concerning the issue.

When it comes to which among these 5 that I'm most comfortable to tell my gambling addiction, I will gladly choose to tell either a trusted friend or a priest who may have been groom to have vast knowledge about addiction and it's possible ways of overcoming it, most especially Catholic, Methodist or Anglican priests who goes through many years of training, learning both theology and philosophy. Because as a married man, explaining such challenges to your wife might not sound ethical if she isn't an expert in such field, and likewise a doctor or physician in that field that might be the right people to meet, but such meeting isn't done free, as you will be expected to pay a certain fee for booking a session with them.

When I was encountering some financial issues due to poor decision making on my part, the first thing that I did was I consulted with my girlfriend (now partner). I knew that if there's a person who can help me overcome this problem, it would be her knowing that she'll be straightforward with me without any filters or sugar coating. My relationship with my partner is built upon trust and support. I just cannot imagine keeping any secrets without telling her about it.

This is the reason on why your wife should also be your best friend because she will be the first person to tell you about the mistakes you failed to see on your own.

I definitely agree with you. If you have an established relationship where you can freely share your problems, then that would be very comforting on your end, albeit painful. These people, whom we trust, are the first persons who would tell us about our mistakes that we failed to see.

I believe in communication, communicate your activities more with people around you, they should know all you do, especially if you are a gambler.  However, anyone who is addicted should know that what he needs is someone who can help him recover and  a doctor is the most preferred in this case. Even if he tells a priest, best friend or family, a sensible person will refer him back to the doctor. Another reason one should choose to trust the doctor is because, some friends or people who are not specialists in dealing with addiction may lead you astray and delay your recovery.

Regardless of who a person confides in, it won't matter unless that person wants to change. Even with professional help people still go back to the addiction once they stop seeking the help, so someone has to look deep down inside themselves and make a decision.

You are very correct, expect one is determined to stop or quit gambling, will they tell other people about it but if one is not ready to do so, there is no point in preaching about your addiction to other, because that seems childish, which there is no trophy about it. I think the best place to confide your secrets is to a specialist doctor or a close friend. A specialist doctor has experience in treating these cases, and talking to a close friend may give you some advice that will help you or at least put your mind at ease.

I live in a Muslim community where confession to a priest is not customary, and gambling is religiously forbidden. Therefore, addicts don't dare confide in anyone except a doctor or a close friend. Many don't even dare to talk about gambling in front of anyone.

I'm not currently addicted but I almost fell into addiction when I newly started gambling until I finally came out of it based on my self realization. If I'm addicted to gambling, I will freely discuss it without anyone that can offer help to me so that I stop being addicted, I can not complain to who will not help me come off the addiction but anyone that can help me, I will explain my challenge to them. It's pretty funny how people believe they need an external body to liberate them from addiction. Personally I'm of the opinion that gambling addiction is just a trap you free yourself from by simply taking the right decision. A doctor or a psychologist can arguably try but it doesn't mean he can guarantee fixing it.

If a gambler hasn't genuinely resolved within himself to stop then there's nothing that will break him out of it. As for telling, sharing with the right persons especially loved ones could go a long way helping.

Come on man... How did you spot my reply? Well it ain't that far but I still am genuinely amazed though reading up to page 2 on the gambling board finding something suitable and making an on point reply is pretty rare man. Nevertheless let's not soar too far off topic.

Addiction is just a mind trap and only you can really control your mind. According to studies  a habit takes roughly 21 days minimum to surface statistically if you can control your mind that long then you might just break out.
