The international women's day just passed and I hope you all took your time to send wishes to your mothers, sisters, wives, girlfriends and all the lovely women in your life Cheesy. Anyway, Happy International Women's Day In Arrears to myself and all the lovely women in our Local board including the forum at large.

Back to the topic, women are nation builders cause they play a major role in the economic, social and political growth of a country but I've discovered that Nigerian women are not really thriving in the political sector and it's so disturbing cause that's one area women need to seriously participate and help build the nation democratically. To prove that my statement is correct, out of the 109 members of the 10th senate in Nigeria, only 4 women holds the position of a senator and out of the 360 reps members, there are just 17 women holding that position.

You can see that the numbers are poor, yet we say women are nation builders, now how can women help build in the political sector when the number of female lawmakers in the country are not up to 30%. It's very poor compared to other democratic nations and I keep wondering why women are not trying to make a change concerning that. However I've figured out that monetary constraints is one of the reasons that hinders many women from stepping up to contest for key political positions in the country, there's more to it though and I'll love to hear your opinions as to why Nigerian women are not thriving politically.

The major reason why women are not thriving politically in our country is not because they actually don’t want to but because the country we find ourselves today think women can’t rule us. Our country think women are meant to be beneath and not on top or even rule over men. It is believed that men should be the head, the ones to rule and the men are not meant to serve the women.

So many have the passion for politics but because of this reason most of them tend to back down. Even when most reliable and capable women come out for some political roles, most citizens refuse voting for them, all because they are women and not meant to lead. Although there are still some women who occupy some political roles as you’ve mentioned but not much and I hope more women are given the opportunity to lead because some can even do more better than our current leaders.

The truth is that women no good with power, and na because of that, Nigerians no go wan vote a woman as their leader. As you don talk already, we believe say a man should be superior, so if for any reason any woman come out for we to vote am, people no go turn up for her even though them see her as a better option because them believe say women are not born to lead a man.

To be sincere here, I no go fit go out during election say na woman I wan go vote, because as a typical naija boy, i no go fit respect a woman as my leader like the way i go respect a man. So women fit come out as a speaker or house of representative members, but to lead the house or any elected position wey na them go be number one, e no go work at all.

That's true dear, i could remember a slogan that used to trend back then "women's education ends in the kitchen" I think it became more popular when the former president Buhari talked about his wife's position being in the kitchen than a first lady of the federation. All those would give women the mindset that they shouldn't challenge men for political positions since it's dominated by men.

However, we should be going forwards instead of backwards, it's high time for women to sit up. They should look up to other women who managed to get there as a motivation that they too contest for political positions and win. We ought to do everything possible to move Nigeria forward afterall men have held more positions for too long yet there no changes.

In Nigeria we feel that women are not supposed to lead when there are still men in the country but to be sincere women are supposed to be given same right, women can run for any position but i no sure say them go fit vote them in and on a second thought also they can easily be influence by their husbands if they are been given such an opportunity.

Also looking at the other way round men has been our leaders for decades now but nothing has changed in the country instead it's from frypan to fire but i believe that the country may likely change for good if an opportunity is been given to woman to lead like some like Ngozi Okonjo Iweala can be the president of the country and it will be a better place to be.

Women are not actually striving in politics because the society doesn't see them fit for political positions and they feel they will easily be intimidated by the Men, it is not as if they won't govern well if they are given power, narrowing it to one of the female house of reps during Dr,, Good luck Ebelle Jonathan that embezzle a huge sum of money that was earmarked for constituecy project and left it undone so you see why they find it difficult to give them power, though the men are not exempted of the above mentioned embezzlement.

Some Nigeria thinks women don't have the mental capacity to lead and they can't withstand pressure, and there's a narrative that has been going round when we were very small that women education ends in the kitchen, that particular statement has killed the morale of so many women that would have engaged themselves in politics and secondly if a woman wants to be active in politics before she will get a political appointment or position several leaders in the party will want to take advantage of her so because they don't want to be used as sex toys they decided to stay back from politics.

Nigeria political space is very hard, dirty and corrupt on like in other countries whereby there are laid down rules, in Nigeria no rules, politics is just like a gorilla warfare in which only the strongest survive.
In Nigeria the men see the women as weaker vessels and can hardly give them any key position to handle, most of the women too can’t go far lengths as demanded, that’s why the men hardly entrust them with such responsibility of leadership.

I just do hope that with proper partnership women will thrive more in the Nigeria politics, I also believe that if we create an enabling environment devoid of sentiments women will participate more.

Bro, this one no be about mentality or whatsoever. Sorry to ask, you don work under a woman before?
If you don work under woman before, you go understand wetin I dy talk, but that one na discussion for another day.

You talk of how most countries women nai be their president, forgetting say na Western countries something like that fit happen, you forget say we na Africans, and as a typical African, men will always come first before a woman wether you like am or not. You also forget say na only the West women dy rule, check in Asia, Africa and even the middle east, you don see women rule for those areas before?

We as Africans no need to copy every nonsense the westerner dy do, na so them try to impose homosexual and lesbianism on Nigeria during good luck Jonathan reign, but as him no gree implement am for naija, nai them do everything in their power to make am to lose the election to the late  buhari, so my brother, no be everything them dy copy.

It's only in Nigeria women doesn't sit in good political power. There's this neglect against women. Most of us doesn't think women are in good position to run for any upper positions in politics. The country is heavily dominated with men who are selfishly haunting for more power and they wouldn't give any slide opportunities to the women. There absolutely no voice for women in this country. Do you think it's a bad thing that women are entirely kicked out from power and even the feminists fighting have no voice in the country.

It’s not  only monetary constraints that is stopping woman from politics, most men still has a terrible mindset towards woman , they feel woman cannot lead them , some still feels woman are just home builder, that we just get married , have kids , stay at home and manage home , the society don’t Favour woman at all, some woman despite  been married are still sexually  abuse, so some husband seeing all that is happening won’t even allow their wives to join politic , the rate at which woman are neglected in Nigeria is alarming , but my happiness now is woman are learning to stand up for themselves, and don’t allow society to treat them so bad as before ,Nigeria men loves power and always want to be in charge, women stepping up is alway an obstacle to them but not men sha , so I think this is why woman are not much in politics .

You'll be shocked to hear statements like "woman wey dey bend down piss, no go fit be my leader". Not even minding the leadership qualities she has to offer, such mindset didn't start today, the male figures have become so dominant and forget that even though men are naturally born leaders we still need women by our side to help build or family. That's why I fully support the OP's statement that "women are nation builders" since a society starts with the family. Let's trace back to history, several women have thrived in leadership positions before our colonial masters stepped in, women like.
Queen Amina of Zaria
Moremi who contributed to Yoruba women's liberation
Inikpi the Princess of igala land
Queen Kambasa of Bonny, and several others.
So I wonder why anyone could think women shouldn't be given the opportunity to lead or hold key positions in our country. Well, it's good that several women have taken the challenge to rise up but it's not enough, more should sit up cause we all need to build this nation together, Nigeria needs serious change and women too have to contribute to it instead of remaining silent and allow evil men in power ruin it completely.

I wont say women are not fully involved in nigeria politics because they are not favoured as the few present has complete access to move to where they wish to get to but all because if the leadership system in Nigeria is the main reasons it appears they are not actively involved in it. In Nigeria today leadership is operated within a specific circle and this have been there since the existence of the country Nigeria that is why the leaders of Nigeria since the country was created is still the leaders of the country till today and never give chances for modification but only bring in candidates by recognition and favour but not qualification. So no matter how vibrant the woman is, if she do not fall to any ruling umbrella,  gaining access must deffinately be difficult

Women has more population than the men in Nigeria yet they can't team up to vote themselves because they're weaker vessels they don't really stand on their own without men. Women originally were not build to lead, the change the society gives them the chance to rule yet they can't utilize their number for their gains.

The Nigeria Political system is so corrupt for women to thrive in, that's why we have few of them in the political system and those are the ones that are stronger, they think like men, they can stand and face the hear in the political system. If you don't have the courage and strong mind to can't play the Nigeria politics.

Why are you sounding like a woman needs to become the president before we can know that women also rule. Do you know the president of World Trade Organization (WTO)? she's a woman and her name is Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala from Nigeria. However, politics is a tough game that a woman needs not to involve in especially the sensitive positions. There's no need for seeking for equal right and opportunity in the government because it won't work. Man has been giving dominion by God almighty so it applies to every area of life. There are capable women who can become the president in this country but let them be given that privilege and see how everything will become disorganized because most women act by their emotions.

Every learned person should know about Dr. Okonjo Iweala or Prof Dora Akunyili and the roles they've played in representing Nigeria globally but that's not the point. The number of female leaders are very less and that's the point I was trying to raise, that women shouldn't be shy of taking up roles that would help build our nation. We can change that ideology that politics is a game that women shouldn't involve in, it's not so in other developing nations then why are we different?

Democracy is gradually dying in our country and mind you, it's not about seeking equal right and opportunity but democracy demand that both male and females have the right to contest for any positions they desire. What makes you feel that more women shouldn't sit up cause men are given dominion by God, did God said women can't become leaders too? Or do you think Men alone can build our nation or is it not same God people in Italy, Mexico and other nations where women are leaders worship?

What makes women not suitable for leadership is their emotions, they act with emotions which is not good for someone that is leading, am not saying that their are women that doesn't act with less emotions, but it's very few women that are less emotional.

Secondly, in Africa and most part of the world, women are meant to be a support to a man, not a leader, because men are born to lead, so it's difficult for most men to accept to be ruled by a woman, so am not a bit surprised why women are not striving politically in Nigeria, because they wouldn't be given the chance even if they want to, since they are flawed by their emotions.

Apart from the emotion which you have stated which I agree with you to a very large extent, women can not rule here in this county called Nigeria even  if there are some of them that can manage their emotions well although there may not be anyone them, get this point, we are in a system tahg does not see women fit for such position, I do remember when the late President Buhari made a statement about his wife e belonging to the kitchen and the other room, many people read meaning into that, some said he was actually right afterall women main duty is in those places he mentioned, let me make this clear here, women can be given other exotic positions but you see president, Senate president, speaker of the house of reps, governor, I do not think that women will ever be elected in these leadership positions that I mentioned in this country.

The number of women in politics is poor because of the way Nigeria men view woman , they feel women cannot be a leader to a man ,it’s not only on politics , their are some churches in Nigeria women are not allow to climbs utter to preach when men are there , even most men can’t marry a very successful woman , because they feel the woman cannot submit, so generally the society at large find it so hard for a woman to rule them and they can do whatever it takes to make sure  a woman doesn’t win , when a man is there , it will be a slap on there faces,  this has made most people to believe that female education ends in the kitchen , some even prefer women to acquire a skill instead of going to school , because they don’t see any good it will amount to , but I pray such mindset towards women will change .

From origin all countries all over the world have representatives starting from the military era to the civilian leadership system and where men, not that there was no intelligent or excellent women that was meant to rule then but because of the requirements of leadership women where not elected all as a result of natural gender roles of nature. From the gender role of nature, women are supposed to be submissive to there men but because of the said civilization and gender equality principles, women came into politics which was why  vigdis finnbogadotirr because the first female president in 1980  for Iceland although her leadership was a bit fear with little wrong political decision made as at then.

After clearly looking at the requirements of politics i will support the gender inequality that existed in Africa since origin as coping the western culture is one of the problem affecting Africa today. Not that woman dont posses the qualities of leadership but they have limitations to be compared to that of the men as they are easily controlled by irrelevant things and should remain submissive to the men as they where supposed to be because God that straightly talked about there submissiveness to there partners has reasons for that.
