If you have received an answer to your question and you are completely satisfied with it, it is advisable to close the topic to prevent further spam.

Yes, but it is better you wait for 2 people to support the person that posted it. If you see the kind of thread that I mean, you will understand. Once you are satisfied with the answers, just lock the thread to avoid people not to turn it to a spam discussion.

Example is this thread now that needs to be locked.

It's all depends on the thread, if it is a straight and a definite answer that is needed which prompted you to create a thread and you're satisfied with the response received, you can lock it.

On the contrary, there are threads in which are for discussion and this may be on a long time discussion and not about question that needed a particular response, therefore, such thread may not be locked because it continue in serving it's purpose.

Lastly, there are other things that may quicken the move to lock a thread, if the content is not interesting or an off topic, draw for unnecessary arguments, or even violate some of the posting ethics of the forum, all this could lead to a thread being lock by OP or the moderator.

The choice is yours since you’re the one creating the thread. But for me, if the question is very specific and only concerns your situation, then it’s better to lock it once you already get the answer you’re looking for.

But if the topic contains information that others might also find useful, you can leave it open even if you’re not replying anymore. That way other users can still read it and share their thoughts. The only problem is when it turns into a spam thread with repetitive answers. That usually happens because not everyone reads from the first page to the last before replying. When that happens someone might report the thread and the mods will likely lock it anyway.

If you've gotten your answer, you should lock your topic. Ensures that there are no unnecessary further replies, necro replies in the future or things becoming off-topic.

If the discussion is a kind of general discussion after gotten what you want you can either decide to lock it or leave it to be interacted with, as I know even though the question gained about 1-6 pages you could see more reputable members coming to respond there especially if they read the post and noticed what they wanted to say is not been answered by anyone there. But if you are already satisfied with what they Said over there then there is no crime Locking the said topic.

Often the situation changes. A correct answer 6 months ago may be incomplete now. Or even worse, someone might have given an imprecise answer, the OP is satisfied and locked, and now nobody can give him the correct answer.

This is why stackoverflow topics remains open forever. And answers evolve over time there, they can even be edited by other users later on to update it

Like your topic now might be a very good example to understand your questions..go through it and see if the reply by many users have already satisfied your question. Most times like others have said, it depends on the kind of discussion in question.. if it's just a mere or regular question that have been answered a lot of times, then few replies will be enough if the op is fine with what he got. But for a general discussion that simply cannot be comprehended by one reply, then it's fine to let it run. Most mega thread we have on the forum usually brings updated replies from time to time as more people gets different ideas..

Yes definitely we are in the cryptospace and it's still evolving. Every now and then, updated information continues to pop out. It's best to leave threads open so it can be updated and discussions might continue...

Depends on question asked. For example, if it's something like this, you know your query is solved and you need no further 'support' answers, though other people can give merit to the answer as a way to show support.

OP - yes you should lock a question thread after you have received your fill of opinions.   Otherwise the signature spammers do not read the other answers and will post the same solution, ad nauseum.

I felt I had something extra to add, so I commented. I can go elsewhere to get my advertising money too, there is no lack of threads.

Yes you can a topic, not a post, but this is not a mandatory thing.
However, if you notice that your topic is starting to get more spam posts from other members, after you clearly received a good answer, than you should lock your topic.
Generally I would not worry about that, unless your topic starts having multiple pages.

Depending on the thread . There are some post with straight answers , that don’t usually strike more discussion. Such is advisable to close the thread to prevent any further spamming , while there are some thread that brings serious discussion due to different contrary opinions . Such you can choose to leave open as long as you want , because through those discussions a lot can be learnt.

To be honest, libert19 or anyone in sig campaign shouldn't see this as an attack. Some replies are not necessary rather just like a rephrasing of another even individual opinions, knowingly or unknowingly, and either way is still like spam.

I bet you that if Op or mod doesn't lock this topic, coming here before tomorrow or next, you will noticed replies saying the same thing with different wording.

Yes, always!
Depending on where you opened the post, it will keep receiving new replies for many weeks, and you probably won't even read them anymore.
The person posting the replies also won't read all the previous posts (if it's already long) before making their own reply, so it's very likely that this will become spam and have repetitive content.

If you've already received the desired answer and believe that you won't receive any more constructive replies or replies that add value to the forum, then close it.

In the local section I participate in, it's common to leave posts open, because we have a better understanding and know that when a topic fulfills its purpose it no longer needs to be answered, and gradually it is discontinued.

But I see that in other international areas of the forum, spam is a serious problem.

OP, I believe that you have gotten the answer to your question from the first poster. It's high time you lock this thread because everyone is repeating the same thing and spamming the thread.

It looks like the OP, don't care of coming back to this thread to get answers and do the needful. He just created the thread and abandoned it.

I didn’t expect the thread to continue about the first reply but here we are.

OP didn’t exactly abandon the topic. He hasn’t been online since he made this thread. The best we can do now is report the topic to get locked but do people want to do that when they can make an easy comment to add to their signature quota. I don’t think so.
