So I lost ₦200k today as a result of lack of knowledge, and I wasn't only the victim,
I usually send money to my dad, but if it is a huge transaction, I will borrow him because I am not financially stable enough to give out such money yet.

They hacked into his WhatsApp account, and innocent me thinking that it is him asking me to borrow him ₦200k, I never knew it was a scammer,
Funny enough as soon as I sent it, my dad called me telling me that I should come and help him out Check what was wrong with WhatsApp, Omo Evey where first blur for my side oh

I came back and told him what happened, and all he did was laugh, for person wa I think say I been de help oh
And there where also others that the guy chatted up as well my father's friends, family etc some also fell for it while other called first.

Nevertheless, every one should be cautious, before you send money, call the person or something, I wouldn't wish why one to do the same mistake again

This is a careless mistake nah, or are you trying to tell us the scammer hacked your dad's bank account and took away the money? Or how exactly did it happened, because to be frankly speaking, I have my dad's bank account number, and likewise that of all my siblings saved as favorite in all my banking apps, and whenever they request for money, I will just log into the app and just send them money straight.. So abeg, can you explain wella, how did this happened, because I seems not to understand?

Secondly, 200k is not a small money for any of your family members to just chat you up and then send a totally different account for you to transfer the money and you will not call them on either on video call or audio call for confirmation.  So abeg, this your story no clear..

Hacking WhatsApp and soliciting for funds from the victim's contacts isn't a new thing, but I think they kind of increased their tempo of attack recently. I've some friends who have experienced this and it's either they didn't activate 2FA on their WhatsApp account or another device was linked to theirs without their knowledge and was using the account alongside them.

I'm still confused how you lost the money considering the fact that you sent it to your father,
Didn't you send the funds to him directly?
Or did you not verify the name before sending to ensure it was his account?

This reminds us to always verify by calling a user before initiating any transfer to verify. Personally I request for a VN for small amounts and call the user for any amount up to 50k especially if you request I send it to another account which isn't yours.

Finally, I hope you've enabled 2FA on your dad's WhatsApp so there's no repeat of such?

Well that's a sad story/ experience and if I may say that scam is actually common. It basically happened to my dad too but we were able to know because my dad never asks us for money still most folks in his phone had already sent money. In this case it seems most times parents trust people with their phones especially those phone repairers. And At times some of them are scammers taking the opportunity to get the details of someone's WhatsApp when they aren't looking...

Overall one quick question bro  how come you transferred money to a bank that doesn't have your father's name on it Or is it that you didn't check Because there is no way the scammer will gain access to your dad's bank account. Seriously speaking you didn't check the name before transferring the money if you had you would have known it wasn't your dad.... that's all for me, bro.....

I don't know if you are be blamed or not, but one thing I know is that this could have been avoided if you take some time to think before sending the money. Actually it wouldn't have come to your mind to think before responding because it's your dada account the scammers used to message you in the first place. According to your thread, you said you are not financially stable for know (doesn't mean you can't borrow a family member/someone 200k or either not). Have your dad asked you to borrow him 200k before or is this the first time. If this is the first time that means it's your fault, you would have called him to confirm just like the other people did, if this is not the first time he had asked you for such amount of money then I don't think it's your fault, the second thing you should have considered is the reason for the money, you should behave verified a lot of things before sending.
Well it's 200k and not someone's life, so just keep hustling the right way, hoping that one day things get better.

Well, so sorry but should I say that you messed up big time? And the reason being because this type of scam is not new at all, it's lasted over a decade or that scammers/hackers could hack any body's whatsapp and use that to solicit for help (often in money) from the friends and family of their victim who obviously will not be aware that the WhatsApp of the person they believe they are chatting with has been hacked..

What I've been doing is, except I message you first asking for you account number to send you some funds, of which if you send the account number, I must make sure it's an account that has your name on it or one that I am familiar with..
When ever anybody chats me up claiming to be in desperate need for my financial assistance, what I first of all do normally is to call the person to find out what exactly the issue it, this strategy have saved me multiple times from falling victim to this cheap type of scam.

I totally understand your point here. I can't just wake up one day to send money to a total different account number just because you believe you are chatting with your dad. Even if the person is your dad, why not just call to ask why he need a huge amount of money. Normally if my dad ask me for money today, I usually send money to my dad's usual account and if he ask for an amount this huge? Trust me I will call him to confirm if it's really him or maybe to even ask why he needs this big amount of money before sending it.

Omo it just does not make any sense to send money blindly. Just small common sense could have saved you a lot of troubles here. Scammers are everywhere always looking for a new trick to scam people of their hard earned money, if you had take a moment to double check things, then you might have avoided losing money unnecessarily.

So honestly, this story is somehow hard to believe because it goes against normal sense and routine. Omo the lesson is simple here, no matter who is requesting money, even if na close family member, always try and confirm before transferring money. See better safe than sorry ooo.

Just for the benefit of doubt can you post the transfer let see if you are actually saying the truth and we can also help you to escalate the scam report on the digital banks that recieving account will be blocked after your fund's may have been transferred back to you, this WhatsApp scam have been around and even Facebook hack too, but, our case is so careless to be true.

I can't understand why you send money to a different account number thinking it's your dad you are sending the money to, let me ask you again, if the hacker got through with your dad's WhatsApp, did they also hack his name and bank account too?

Something is not connecting in this.

I transferd the money to another account number, that is not his, because he told me to transfer it to that account, and I personally though he wanted to give someone the money or something like that, because this is something we have done before,
I send money to his person and the person confirmes it with him, I didn't send to his account number.
I now see where the mistake is coming from, because immediately he sent you a different account number, that's immediately you could have initiated either an audio or video call to verify. But however, since the number was your dad's and someone you truly trusted and have made similar transactions with, it's very common for any random user to have fallen victim to this. But moreover, the mistake have been done and the next thing that should be done now is how to look for a way to recover the money back.. So I will like to asked, which bank did you transfer the 200k to? Is it any of our Fintech banks like Opay, Moniepoint or Kuda or was it our traditional banking account number, because if it was Opay, you can log-in the app and report the transaction as fraud, and the money might be locked in the person's account.

Mistake has no master, but you could have made confirmation before you sent the money especially as it was to be sent in a different account that has differs from the normal account you used to send him money.
This type of scam had been active for long, many people who don’t care to make further confirmations have fallen victim of such scams and the scammers keep trying their best to keep scamming people; we need to be wise enough to be falling for such scams.

I will advise you to set 2FA for your Dad’s WhatsApp to avoid it getting compromised easily again because our parents might not be informed with such scams, and since it is not related to bank accounts, they will think it is not as important to raise an alarm until the damage is done; therefore, let’s educate our parents and open their eyes to such scams.

This is actually a sadden experience. This is exactly what scammers does, they hack people's social media account and use them to commit all manner of crime. You are not the first person having this kind of experience, I have had it too, but it is important you brought there so that people will be more careful.

For the sake of this experience, if someone demands for help through chat, ensure to communicate with the person directly to avoid this kind of mistake. More also, if your account is hacked, do not hesitate to contact that platform through their customers care or help center so that they will be able to act immediately before it is too late.

I had this experience sometime ago where my Facebook account was hacked and the person was using my Facebook account to post rubbish and was using it to beg for money. I had to apply for the closure of that account and letting people know am not the one begging for money, but someone who hacked my account.

Take it that it is an old scamming scheme but never fades because vulnerables will always fall victim out of ignorant.
OP you will have a portion to be blamed in this case because you should had been able to grasp when someone you are conversant and regularly communicating with is somehow the social handle communicating with you in the unfamiliar approach.

And when it comes to do with money or other means of values online, you should be skeptical and try find out the actual person in the behind the scene if it is an impersonator or not.
Perhaps calls is a one way to find out the truth.

This reason is also why it is important to set chats in the disappearing mode to enhance security whereas, you don't keep chat histories and living no loopholes for hackers

Not a careless mistake from his end, he felt he was talking to his Dad because the scammer used the father's direct WhatsApp line to chat him up. It's not like it's a different line all along. Anyone can fall for the scam, including you. Unfortunately, he is not the first victim of this type of scam. A lot of people have experince this thing, and it's mostly the elderly who fall for this scam.

It depends on the write-up of the scammer. If he requests the money, by saying send it to my colleague's account, send it to the store owner, some shit like this, you won't hesitate if you have it. Perhaps someone is fixing his car, and he said, send it to the mechanic.

Nevertheless, every one should be cautious, before you send money, call the person or something, I wouldn't wish why one to do the same mistake again

I transferd the money to another account number, that is not his, because he told me to transfer it to that account, and I personally though he wanted to give someone the money or something like that, because this is something we have done before,
I send money to his person and the person confirmes it with him, I didn't send to his account number.
Things like this can happen to anyone though and many people can fell into such scam situations like this but I guess you did learn from this mistake because I wouldn’t be to careless to send money for my parents into different account for the fact that we have seen many occasions of how people get scammed easily.
I don’t know ooh but for me right, i do normally do send my parent money on their personal accounts then if they want the money to be sent to any other account aside theirs then of course I will call them and make sure they are the one requesting for the money. To be honest we all know this isn’t the first time of situation like this occurring I don’t know for others but this isn’t the first I’m hearing stuffs like this and I know many people ain’t new to this stuff so next time I bet you should be more caution and making sure of things before making decision. 200k isn’t a small money with the current country situation so that money is gone wow, soft 200k 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️.

It’s really painful, so sorry for that , the rate at which they hacked people’s  WhatsApp and Facebook  is much now , everyone should be security conscious, a lot is really happening now ,  before you make any transaction make sure you call via phone number even if it’s your spouse , I had similar experience some months ago , my friend chatted me up on Facebook asking for about 50k that his bank network is bad , that his at a shop buying something and stranded , immediately sent me a different account number, which has never happened so I just called him to confirm if it’s actually him because the person in question can’t call to ask for financial help , I was worried within myself, when I called he picked and said his at home , that is not him , immediately rush to his page but couldn’t access it , so we have to use a different Facebook account to post to create awareness , many has already fall victim , they collect a lot of money from his friends.

Well OP sorry for the lost it really could happen to anyone but I think from your perspective next time you would have learn to call first before making any transactions…see your guys most really that the app Casper Facebook,Whatapp and the rest are really transparent and in such misleading it could get hack by Hacker…sometimes very nice to call before such kind of a scammer next time I believe that such mistakes would not find you again….and the real truth is that after the transaction your eyes go first blush…

Such incidents clearly shows how close or far apart we are with our parents, partners or siblings, why am saying so is because if you really know your dad very well and a random person that is not your dad chat you for money you will quickly decode that it’s a scam, me for example no one can use such trick on me because my dad can never chat me for any reason, he has never before, so if i see a chat from anyone in the name of my dad i will be very skeptical about it, anytime my dad wants to ask or tell me something he always calls me on phone, and even when he calls before he starts to talk he calls me a particular name that apart from my direct siblings no other person knows the name, my dad also talks in a particular way so even if the scammers manage to get the name they won’t have my dads exact aura, so even if anyone tries to call or mimic his voice i will still be able to decode that he is not the one.

Let’s try to be more careful, most people that gets scammed is out of either carelessness or greed, if one is a bit careful with transactions it will be a bit difficult for any scammer to succeed, mind the p.o.s you use, mind the codes you dial on your phone, understand your close allies so that even if someone tries to impersonate them you can easily tell the difference and avoid greed so that you don’t end up doing business transactions with scammers because they always come with juicy offer’s, let this #200k scam be a lesson, try to be more careful so that such scenario won’t repeat itself again.
