Moneyline or Point Spread, what do you focus on more?

When betting on sports, do you usually focus on the moneyline or the point spread?

For me, the moneyline feels easier, especially when backing the favorite or just picking the team I like. But when you look at the odds, favorites often sit around 1.25 or even lower. Sure they win most of the time, but I rarely see people who stay profitable long term betting those kinds of odds.

You can push the odds higher to around 1.70 or so, but once you do that the chances of winning also drop. So even if moneyline looks safer, the results don’t always translate into real profit.

So I’m curious how others approach it. Do you prefer moneyline or point spread?

I have always prefer money line than to go for point spread, but there are times that I like to go for handicap and supported team over 1.5 or over 2.5 or even more, like over 3.5, but most of the time I prefer to go for money line.

But I have seen this kind of topic before several times on this forum. Why asking the question or people just like to be repeating topics? And it is surprising to me that it is just money line that is used to compare point spread.

Moneyline is more preferable to me instead of pointspread. As a gambler, I gamble to make profit and not to accumulate much odds. Though, even gamblers who go for moneyline also fail sometimes, but not as often as those who are bent on accumulating so much odds. I gamble, and I have also tried using these two strategies and it is confirmed that moneyline is the best strategy, most of the time, the lower odds are likely to be successful like odds of about 1.2, 1.3 and 1.35. These odds have high chances of winning and this is what the big stakers take advantage of, by the time they select up to two or three games of these kind, couple with good staking power they record more wins than losses.

I would go for point spread like what I always do (check my thread).
What I’m really looking for are odds that can realistically give me a chance to be profitable, and with point spread I can usually get around 1.90+ odds. Unlike moneyline where, like you mentioned, if you bet at 1.25 you have to win about 4 straight bets just to break even.

I think that’s quite hard, and sooner or later we’ll realize it’s mostly just for fun, not really where the profitability is.

I bet mostly on money line because that's what I'm used to. However, once in a while, I bet on point spreads like betting on a particular player to score or on how many yellow cards will be in the game. I am not that lucky when it comes to point spread which makes me not fancy it as a good gambling strategy.

Majority of my win has been from money line. My neighbor is a good fan of point spreads sometimes, I meet him for predictions if I want to try my luck on point spread.

It depends on the game honestly, there are times that I do moneyline in football and point spread in basketball but the most approach that I usually do especially if the odds for the moneyline is too low (just like what you've said) is the combination of both in single match, for instance 1x2 + point spread or total scores in football would result in decent odds instead of placing bet on moneyline alone or point spread but it's actually good in both basketball and football, the only risk is one wrong prediction and you'll lose your ticket.

Because I bet a low amount of money only, I choose to pick the spreads most of the time. Bump the odds up to x1.70 to x1.90, and I am satisfied with that. IMO, there's no sense in betting for just x1.30 down because it will not be felt in the profits.
Well, as long as the spreads are reachable, I think it's not that stupid to bet on it. Before, I always targeted underdog betting, but after losing way too much consecutively, I stopped doing it. I will take the 30-40% chance of winning, but going lower than that is foolish for me unless it's really a team or player who has a chance to win the game.

On games where the chances are almost even, moneyline is good. But when one team is a heavy favorite and you still choose the moneyline odds, I think it’s not worth it.
I mean if we keep chasing those low odds, that could easily lead to bigger problems.

I’ve done that in the past, I even tried martingale with it and it still didn’t work. So I guess the most realistic choice is the point spread, because with the right bankroll management and no chasing, getting around 53% already makes you a little profitable.

I would say its 50/50 accross the board, it kind of depends on the circumstances of a particular match up.

If its really difficult to pick a moneyline bet well then there are other options available. Everyone is balancing
Chances of winning with return. Some people are happy to bet on low odds and use the moneyline and
others want better value for their bet in the name of making bigger profits.

I usually prefer money line.

Point spread with + spread is more easier for me to predict compared to money line. I don’t know but those margin points gives me confidence on my bet since it gives me a chance to still win even my team lose as long as the score cover the point spread.

As what you have said, if there are no juicy ML odds then why bet on it? Unless you are going for a parlay and have a combination of small odds. So if that is the case, then I will just look at handicap as it is usually around 1.8x or higher for the favorite, or a + for the underdog that might start at 2.x.

Also I have seen a ML with a 1.1x odds but still not guarantee for a win.

So sometimes it's better to go on the underdog and maybe test a small stake and see if it will go through. Specially if that underdog is really trying to win the game so even if you lost, you feel that the team really give it all so you have a good chance and you see that your bet is good.

I normally prefer the point spread, because moneyline are most of the time generates lesser profit if you're betting on the favourites. But, if the underdog is too good to pass on, and if I think the underdogs can actually beat the favourite, I'd go for it sometimes. Though I can't recall it works well for me.
Point spread gives reasonable profit, plus, it can be a little exciting at the final minute even if the opponent are lossing and your team still needs to cover some certain points for you to win.

ML is very tricky if you are not truly familiar on the team you are betting. It gives a very low odds yet those chances of winning is not always statistically accurate in proportion to the odds you are taking.

I rarely take a bet with ML due to the odds and if ever I will take then I will do a parlay than straight bet.

Between the 2 option, I like point spread the most on single bet.

Money line as always especially when it comes to bet on the top teams. It gives us greater chance to win instead of doing spread. Sometimes, the gap between the odds of money line and spread is not that big, but money line offer less risky choice. So i think money line is always preferable for me.
However, an exception to the spread may happen when -0.5 has greater odds compared to the money line. So i'd pick spread when it comes to that situation.

I think the odds is the only main difference from both. Basically, betting on money line or spread 0.5 is almost the same, but odds sometimes make either of choice look a bit attractive.
