Considering you haven't been here long enough like some other members, I don't think you realize how much better the forum is than it was ten years ago. That doesn't mean everything can work perfectly, and that includes the merits system, which has done a good job since 2018.

If you search Meta, there are dozens of topics about merits, but the truth is quite simple if we want to talk about what constitutes a quality post that deserves merits. The fact is that each member has his own criteria by which he decides what a post is worthy of merits and what is not, not to mention how biased members of local boards are towards each other, which is somewhat logical.

I assume that part of your frustration stems from the fact that you were not selected to be a merit source, while on the other hand, some others did get it, and again we come to the fact that they are part of the problem because in their local boards they give merits to members who in other boards are not at the level we expect.

Still, it's not something we can influence - you, me and a dozen other people who didn't get a chance in the last addition of merit sources would perhaps be better at it than some others, but the focus then was obviously on local boards. What you need to know is that changes on this forum are very slow and difficult, and you have to get used to that if you don't want to be constantly frustrated.

If you needed to bring it up, then it's obviously not fine.  I thought the request was childish, and jokingly posted a now reported/deleted post indicating that was my thinking.  But now, the issue isn't so much your request for reactions, it's your ability to take a joke that's being questioned.

Satofan44's post was a reaction, my merit of his post was also a reaction.  There will be times that people react to your words in ways you didn't expect and didn't want.  That's not just the internet, that's life.  You complaining about our reactions makes me think you're far to thin-skinned for this forum.  Maybe it's not the place for you.  

On the other hand, you seem to have enjoyed your time hear, and benefited from it up until now.  Don't let a snarky meme define your entire experience.

Many of them come from the same local board. That makes me think there is now too much Merit going around on that local board, and after ranking up they "spill over" to other boards. Just this morning, I left a neutral "Shitposter" tag on this Sr. Member. It's one of many that behave the same way.

I noticed that user when he quoted me recently, and had the same reaction.  I was planning on going through some of his posts, to determine if such a neutral tag was appropriate, and it looks like you beat me to it.

Yeah it would be interesting to have a feature like that but first let's consider how many features of similar kinds have been suggested that were eventually being added? Literally Theymos ignores most of them and only focuses on security related issues or other technical issues too.

So for now you can just express yourself as a reply or leave some merit replies can take less than a minute to to make depending on how brief you intend to make your gesture.

Its just a suggestion to add to the other countless suggestions that has been brought up and you're right, it's only few changes that have been brought up by users that Theymos has implemented. The question is, what relevance will this new feature be on the forum?

I think a similar thread has been created on the meta before; I can recall most users weren't interested in adding this reaction feature. Because I believe it will look more spammy, this forum should always be kept clean. This isn't Facebook or Telegram, where we need to add a reactions button. I am wondering what has driven you to think about adding a reaction button?

You can engage if necessary; if you like a post, it doesn't mean you have to react publicly. Keep yourself when you like a post; why should you express your reaction? However, I am not encouraged to add a reaction.

I like the idea. It would be nice to have some mechanism that allows you to give reactions without you having smerits stocked up to react.

P.S: you can just merit it in that kinda scenario or rather make a reply…that’s what the majority does! I understand you’re trying to be innovative but…

Suppose, you are out of smerits/don't wanna give and you respond to a post in question with, 'LMAO' — I am pretty sure the response will be counted as spam and deleted.

Now, if we are specifically talking about emojis, that might add spam, as you suggested, because of the vast choices we have there. Then how about upvote/downvote or thumbs up/down in this case? Like we see on platforms such as reddit, quora, or youtube?

This way, it won't produce that level of spam, because we are given only two choices, either like it or dislike it. And I believe this method fulfills OP's wishes as well.  

Though I'm not sure of the technical side of this, whether it's possible to implement or not. But it seems like a viable feature to me.

About 5 years ago, when I was an absolute newbie, this was one of my early suggestions - An Alternative to Merit

If you go through the thread, some reputable members bought the idea, while as usual some didn't.
But gradually, I became very familiar with the forum. I learnt that no one cares much about reactions and the forum doesn't promote impulse reactions or responses. If you are going to contribute in a thread, you should spend sometime writing something quality and substantial, otherwise you just scroll pass. That's how I see the forum.

And just look what happened with youtube, they had to hide dislikes because they didn't want to see people disliking a lot some videos.

I am trying to think of other platforms and if we take reddit for example or even quora, they only have upvote or downvote. If you want to let the OP know you found his post funny then you would have to actually type and post. I think this is ok because it encourages talking. It’s a forum and discussions should take place. Facebook on the other hand aren’t exactly meant for discussions. People post their photos and videos there hoping for a reaction but not much for a discussion.

I don't use Quora but I use Reddit and see it is too complicated, with me Bitcoin forum is more simple and comfortable.

Bitcoin forum is too old and with many people, it's too cumbersome like Andreas Antonopoulos who used to a forum moderator but left it years ago.

I don't know how yours appears but I do find the "Dislike" icon beneath the "thumb up" on mine. Though I hardly use it as I don't like discouraging anyone's hustle. I know effort goes into whatever anyone creates on SM. The only time I use is if I discover there's a blatant lie and misinformation of the public. I know that will be my attitude here if introduced.

We kind a give reactions with sending merits currently, and I know this is not always the correct way of liking something.

Yes, that will be the usefulness of it here. Most times I find worthy or helpful posts that I can't merit because I lack merit. At least, I can pat the poster on the back by giving them thumbs up with a "Like" or something positive that's not merit.

So how would the users that reacted show up?

It will be like facebook and other social media platforms or like seeing when you get merited, so if the reaction is created and after reacting and you want to also see the people that reacted and what they reacted, you will just click the reaction button and those that reacted and what they reacted will show, I believe you use Facebook and you are familiar how reacting in facebook shows or works and if that will be difficult for forum they can do it like merit and how people see who merited them.

I think the idea of reaction is cool, but the forum is just in a way that all your thoughts and reactions should be written and again they have provided a reaction already when you are typing and example of it is this
